Okay, here’s a good one - my car needs an MOT and is booked in Monday

Don’t shout at me. I should cancel I’m sure - in fact I don’t know if the garage is even open. But will I get done for not having an MOT? It expires on March 27th.Confused

Me too . I'm just going to leave it !?

Haggisfish · 21/03/2020 17:32

I’ll be taking mine in if garage will do it.

PuppyMonkey · 21/03/2020 17:33

If I just drop and run, it’ll be ok??? Grin

Phone the garage first thing. If you still need it for work then you still need it. You can drop it off and pick it up without getting too close to the mechanics. Then wipe it all down after.
However the mechanics might not want to because they don’t know who is dropping their vehicles off.

Fullmoon28 · 21/03/2020 17:34

Most garages are still open

EmmaC78 · 21/03/2020 17:36

I would still take it. As Lllot says just phone in advance and take sensible precautions.

Gizlotsmum · 21/03/2020 17:36

Mine is booked in for Wednesday.. Still plan on taking it unless they call to cancel

SelfIsolationMeansMorePeppa · 21/03/2020 17:37

I have a friend who is a self employed mechanic who is getting virtually no help to support himself and his family in this time. I'm by no means saying put yourself at risk but maybe phone them first. I know he has a post box outside the garage that people can drop their keys in. Check if they have something like that where you can post your keys. Phone them when you are picking the car up and they can put the keys in the car for you arriving. No need to even see them?

VivaLeBeaver · 21/03/2020 17:38

Do it if they’re happy to. 2m distance from mechanic. Wipe down gear stick, steering wheel, etc after.

Lucked · 21/03/2020 17:38

If you have any wipes I would use them in your keys, steering wheel, handles and knobs when you get it back. Or take a spray bottle and cloth.

PuppyMonkey · 21/03/2020 17:38

That was the plan @Lllot5.

I’m working from home, so don’t need it as such. But I might have to go out in it at some point? Or if I leave it on my drive, will that be ok?

Lllot5 · 21/03/2020 17:40

I think so. Better see if they’re open first though.

EmmaStone · 21/03/2020 17:41

My Dad had his car serviced last week, they were really careful about wiping EVERYTHING down before they started working and when returning the car to him. I'm trying to support as many self-employed and small businesses as I can during this, I'm lucky that my DH has definite job security, and hoping mine will be ok too, so I want to help those who still need to work. Our plumber is supposed to be coming to us on Monday to fix a leak, if he's happy to come, we're happy to have him.

SheldonSaysSo1 · 21/03/2020 17:41

If they are open I would take it before things get worse and then you end up stuck without one.

BlueJava · 21/03/2020 17:43

Car MOTs are currently planned to continue, here
I'd take it in, you may need to use it at some stage. I'd like down the steering wheel, dash, gear stick etc with antibac. Use hand sanitizer before I drive away. Get in and wash my hands immediately.

PuppyMonkey · 21/03/2020 17:45

Thanks everyone. I’m also glad nobody called me and idiot for asking.Grin

Yes. I received an email from my garage informing me that it's pretty much business as usual but with safety measures in place.

YouStupidBoy · 21/03/2020 18:00

I have had an email too; garage opening late so car can be dropped night before without face to face contact (perhaps there will be a box to drop keys in or some such?) and only the person taking your car / keys around, new pair of gloves worn for each car, disposable protective covers used within car and everything touched cleaned.

Connie222 · 21/03/2020 18:04

We had our MOT on Wednesday.

We had to, I’m pregnant so I’ll need the car to drive 45 k minis to hospital over the coming months for scans, consultants etc.

Dh dropped the car and walked 40 mins home.

When he picked it up he took anti bacterial spray with him and wiped everything down inc keys.

MardyGrass · 21/03/2020 18:04

Got mine serviced yesterday.
Had to drop keys in a box at reception
Stay a good distance from the reception desk
Card payment preferred
The technicians wear gloves anyway.
Felt it was more important to make sure my car was running well in event of garages shut completely in lockdown.
If your car has no MOT you can't use it.

Connie222 · 21/03/2020 18:05

*45 mins, even

CottonSock · 21/03/2020 18:05

I would

NettleTea · 21/03/2020 18:05

Im paying extra for them to come and collect and drop back. My daughter is on at least 12 weeks isolation and I need my car to get food and get to work. I will disinfect it when it comes back

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 21/03/2020 18:07

I got an email from my garage last week that it was business as usual but they were taking a lot of precautions because of CV
