My daughter works in TKMaxx and they are closing UK wide after today for “the foreseeable future”

Also heard that Clarke’s are closing.

Daughter is salaried luckily and will get paid as normal for now, but who knows what the future holds?

That's DH our of work. Restaurants all shut. He's getting 80% pay though so it could be worse.

Alpal1 · 20/03/2020 18:46

Dear @covetingthepreciousthings
Please don’t go into work!

midgebabe · 20/03/2020 18:58

Sorry why does closing of pubs lead to black market food?

Oscarsdaddy · 20/03/2020 18:58

I’ve just heard that Harrods are also closing

Now I appreciate that most of us don’t shop in Harrods but it’s a huge, internationally known store and for that to close, except food hall, it’s huge news

I doubt we are long away from all shops except food shops, pharmacies and petrol stations closing down

This, I truly believe will be the biggest thing to affect us in our lifetimes but our ancestors managed to get through World Wars and most of us with get through it completely unscathed but to get there it’s going to be a few months inconvenience.

Take care everyone

12 weeks seems more likely provided people follow the rules

Windowboxgardener · 20/03/2020 19:55

Open today:
Currys PC World (although “we can’t sell you a home printer, or indeed anything, because we have no stock”)
Muji (offensively rude when I tried to buy hand soap in there - eight staff on duty and zero customers, if they didn’t want customers then why not just close?)
Lush - absolutely buzzing with people, hence didn’t go there for hand soap
Zara
M&S
Flying Tiger
Smiggle
& Other Stories
Primark
Topshop
EE

Is Post Office going to stay open? they are open in Italy but I think it's nationalised there.

Holdmenow · 20/03/2020 21:25

I don’t get why you are all so surprised!!??Confused the same thing has happened in lots of other countries...we will get on with it, and get over it eventually!! It has to happen, it is for the greater good!!

BooseysMom · 20/03/2020 21:32

What about libraries? Does anyone know if they're closing/closed?

Clymene · 20/03/2020 21:33

Ours closed today @BooseysMom

BooseysMom · 20/03/2020 21:37

@Clymene.. thanks. I've got a book come in that I reserved. It will be there a very long time

lilgreen · 20/03/2020 21:38

Is Fenwicks in Brent Cross N London still open?

IsadoraQuagmire · 20/03/2020 21:38

What about libraries? Does anyone know if they're closing/closed?

Some of them are, it depends on the area. I use Westminster Libraries (Charing Cross Road is my local) all still open as far as I know, City of London libraries (which have all closed) and Camden libraries (some have closed, some still open)

Any business who doesn't Close is helping the virus to spread and that's what it boils down to.

Moomin8 · 20/03/2020 21:41

Unless of course it's internet shopping

chickedeee · 20/03/2020 21:53

Fenwicks shut yesterday

Our libraries shut today

We live in Kent

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/03/2020 22:48

What about libraries? Does anyone know if they're closing/closed?

I have a family member in a library and they aren't closing yet.. still due to open tomorrow.

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/03/2020 22:49

Any business who doesn't Close is helping the virus to spread and that's what it boils down to.

Exactly this. I actually think it's got to the stage now where it shows which companies are not socially responsible at this time of crisis.

Smidge001 · 20/03/2020 22:50

I just received an email from our library saying it is shut. No fines for not returning any books you currently have. But no way to borrow more.

Alsohuman · 20/03/2020 22:54

Our libraries are open, events are cancelled.

Moomin8 · 20/03/2020 23:26

I'm a beauty therapist and on a Facebook group some salon owners are trying to argue that they should be able to remain open because they call themselves a salon and not a spa. 🙄🙄🙄

They apparently think it's ok for them to still do massages, facials, lashes and manicures which all require more than 15 minutes of close contact. I despair 🙄

caringcarer · 21/03/2020 00:34

At least shop workers will get 80% of their salary until end of June in first instance but longer if necessary. I am glad Boris has closed bars, clubs, restaurants, leisure centres etc as some people are not taking this virus seriously enough. We are two weeks behind Italy and over 600 died there today.

caringcarer · 21/03/2020 00:37

Hairdressers, salons and spas and cricket clubs shpuld also close, it is madness to stay open.

MiniMum97 · 21/03/2020 00:48

Our libraries closed at beginning of the week.

itmusthavebeencoffee · 21/03/2020 01:27

My partner worked in the Leicester Fenwicks for a long time and everyone was bereft when they announced they were closing. Old customers came in and talked about how they'd been visiting the tea rooms for 40+ years, DP got given cash in envelopes, theatre tickets, gifts and eventually a job offer from a wonderful man who was a regular customer to his department. I know it wasn't the original store but Fenwicks holds fond memories for so many people, the staff still meet up every year – it really was a lovely place. I think it will be the same for many independent & older establishments too, it's far more personal. Hopefully we will see most open their doors again.
