How the hell do you know if you’ve got a temp?!

..without a thermometer. I have a sore throat but no cough, feel a bit hot but objectively I have no idea if it’s above whatever the threshold is!

Can’t find one anywhere for love nor money, Amazon, boots, independent chemists..

What did we do before the times of thermometers? Anything better than hand on forehead?

Should add- I’m able to work from home so self-isolating just in case! But I would quite like to know 😅

There's literally hundreds on amazon! I've just been looking because is ours is so old and it's telling me my temp is 32 which I'm pretty sure would render me dead 😂

OldLace · 18/03/2020 10:07

I discovered our old one was broken on Sat.
I cant get a new one anywhere in RL, and on Amazon it only seems to be ones with 4 weeks delivery?

HollySideEyes · 18/03/2020 10:09

Feeling shivery and cold with rosy cheeks, but too hot with covers and clothes...

GirlYouHaveNoFaithInMedicine · 18/03/2020 10:10

Buy a meat thermometer probe and use it in your armpit?

JemimaPuddleCat · 18/03/2020 10:10

@inwood can you link me to one that can be delivered within the next few days?

Fatted · 18/03/2020 10:12

It's feeling shivery and cold in yourself, but being hot to the touch. I also always seem to feel hot around my sinuses/cheeks whenever I have one. But then I have only had a sinus infection and tonsillitis when I last had a temperature.

tiktoktik · 18/03/2020 10:13

The guidance is if you feel hot to the touch on your chest and back.

Although according to thi my daughter is burning up. The ear thermometer is convinced she is stable at 36.1.

Curiosity101 · 18/03/2020 10:14

There seem to be load on eBay with good estimated delivery dates.

Elouera · 18/03/2020 10:17

Have you tried boots or superdrug instore or online?

Curiosity101 · 18/03/2020 10:19

Oh - I've just remembered. Our Tommee Tippee baby care kit comes with a thermometer.

Still on prime next day delivery.

LuxLFC · 18/03/2020 10:21

A lot of the thermometers on eBay & Amazon are sellers based in China. Don't know where their stock is but I have bought stuff with a short delivery estimate only for it to take forever & discover it's coming from over there. A lot of them lie about being able to deliver from the UK so make sure you check reviews first!

OldLace · 18/03/2020 10:29

I tried Boots, Tesco, Asda, Superdrug, B&M, Sainbury's etc a week ago.

Boots had 1 left, behind the counter, which was a 'pricing gun' type thing which you can use at arms length, for £90. I didn't need something like that, and another place might have (eg my dd's primary school who dont have one and are waiting for 4 weeks for the one they've ordered) nor did i have £90.
I had a fancy 'in ear' one when they were little as used quite often but realised it was broken about a fortnight ago.
Kicking myself that I didn't replace the old 'family one' a few months ago but we've barely needed it the last few years as kids became teens.

Curiosity101 · 18/03/2020 10:31

@OldLace - Have a look at health care kits on Amazon / the internet

www.amazon.co.uk/s?rnid=419157031&ref=sr_nr_p_76_1&rh=p_76%3A419158031&k=Healthcare+Kit&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1584527414&dc

There are quite a few available for next day delivery. Obviously it's more expensive than just buying a thermometer. But if you do end up needing one then it could be worth it.

OldLace · 18/03/2020 10:39

Curiosity101
thanks, will order the TT one.
feel a bit guilty as I don't need the other products in it but i guess i can extract the thermometer and donate them.

willloman · 18/03/2020 10:41

Aldi had some in the sort of bargain bins area, about a tenner.
Good luck

Curiosity101 · 18/03/2020 10:44

@OldLace I understand that feeling. But if it makes you feel any better we only use the scissors and the toothbrush from that kit. Other than the thermometer I can't see any of the other items being in demand anytime soon as they're none essential (with the exception of the toothbrush but I can't imagine us running out of toothbrushes...)

dementedpixie · 18/03/2020 10:46

I found our old calpol one we bought when the kids were babies (now age 13 and 16!). New batteries put in and it seems to work

bellinisurge · 18/03/2020 10:46

Bought two the other day off Amazon: one for me and dh, one for in-laws. Pretty cheap.
I amused them with "there are three ways of using them.... guess what they are".
Mouth and armpit are two Grin.
I'm in my fifties, they are in their 70s. This is not news to us. Retro comedy for a moment.

Chocolatedaim · 18/03/2020 10:48

Ours keeps reading low battery and then says in 32.5, both me and husband have been that for several days now 🤔
I went to a first aid course last weekend and they said the in ear ones were pretty good.
I tend to go for back of the hand on the forehead, if it’s hot to touch, you have a temp. Not the most accurate but better than a 7year old tommee tippee thermometer

theneverendinglaundry · 18/03/2020 10:51

I ordered one off Ebay 2 days ago but it's not even marked as dispatched yet. I'll be amazed if it turns up!

Lynda07 · 18/03/2020 10:55

Apart from taking your temperature which you can only do if you have a thermometer, you feel alternately hot and cold, shaky and sweaty/clammy and generally debilitated - feverish. However you can feel a bit like that when nothing is wrong depending on temperature of where you live, what you've eaten, etc, hot bath or had booze! So just sit normally and quietly for a while, observing any changes. Come back next week and tell us how you are. Take care. Flowers

themuminator · 18/03/2020 11:00

I ordered one off amazon but again, will be amazed it if turns up. One of those under the tongue or under arm jobbies. Apparently it is coming some time in April.

I don't have a thermometer otherwise. I had a rubbish forehead scan one which broke ages ago.

I'll have to just guess if we get ill

meemaw12 · 18/03/2020 11:02

I've ordered the tommee tippee baby kit one linked above. i have prime but it isn't going to be delivered until monday. which isn't too bad.

DoubleAction · 18/03/2020 11:04

If you have a temperature you know, surely?
