There are lots of amazing scientists all over the world fast forwarding all kinds of things to mitigate this appalling virus. Testing on humans has already started in US for a vaccine. They are testing drugs to ameliorate the illness and have learnt loads about it. It will still take some time sadly.

Scientists all around the world are working their arses off to do so, and they may already have a vaccine, a cure or both. They will get there. It’s just a question of keeping us safe until they do.

They're working round the clock to develop a vaccine and also to find treatments that will help people get through the acute phase. There are already drugs out there which can help. The vaccine will come later.

I know from a family friend scientist that there is a huge amount of research and funding going into this. He is involved with the front line research and believe me he is working really hard!

UK testing on the first possible vaccine starts next week. It probably won't work, but that's an incredibly short time to have an initial test.

There are loads of clinical trials happening right now around the world, and have been since January.
There is a massive amount of research and cooperation happening around the clock.
They will find a treatment that works, and probably quite soon.

Hopefully they will see this thread and be prompted to try and find a cure.

If any of the many people working on treatment and prevention were on mumsnet, I'm sure swearing at them would encourage them to work harder.

Don’t you think that’s exactly what they’re doing? Even once they do, it’s going to need serious testing and still take about a year to be released.

Just to reassure you a little, there is evidence that some existing drugs may work. This is important because all of the safety testing etc has already been done- after clinical trials (ongoing now), they will be quite fast onto the market if it does show clinical benefit.

I think there was similar situation with Tamiflu and Swine Flu? Although Covid 19 is a different kind of virus.

Did you catch the bit regarding trump wanting sole rights to a vaccine being tested in Germany. They refused.

Pretty much all the scientists have said they are racing against time, not against each other, and that they would be delighted if somebody else gets there before them.
