I will never take anything from before for granted again. This is so distressing in so many ways.

Trump should be tried as a war criminal if he even attempts to hoard or profiteer off a vaccine for this.

Odious leech mouthed twat.

@Confusedasusual78 there are some really encouraging reports coming out about the effectiveness of existing drugs including hydroxychloroquine, anti-malaria drugs, and hiv drugs.

It’s unfortunate that the virus is moving faster than confirming and manufacturing a treatment but it’s really hopeful.

ViciousJackdaw · 19/03/2020 00:04

Will this cure do?

Just fucking find a cure now!

Remdesivir also sounds promising and apparently we’ll find out the results of ongoing trials by the end of April. It would be great if existing drugs were found to work as they should already have gone through safety testing.

Cattenberg · 19/03/2020 00:17

Sorry, missed one of your posts, HonestlyItsFine.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/03/2020 00:18

It'd be great if any existing drugs help, though obviously might take a while to ramp up production.

HonestlyItsFine · 19/03/2020 00:20

Cattenberg- no problem! I didn't realise that we'd get results in April- that's good news. I am crossing everything that it's a success.

Inkpaperstars · 19/03/2020 00:45

I was on hydroxychloroquine till recently...wish I still was.

Fieldofgreycorn · 19/03/2020 00:48

Riiiight. 97% of people get better. That’s a pretty good cure.

Butterymuffin · 19/03/2020 00:53

The news about existing drugs as treatments, and about trials now starting, is extremely good. Better than we could have hoped. We need to sit tight and be patient - it won't be overnight but I think it'll be a lot quicker than first thought. Thank you, wonderful scientists.

tryingtoprep · 19/03/2020 00:56

The existing drugs that have shown promise seem to work only if given before the patient deteriorates. Early treatment is key. Also, do we have enough stock? My other (cynical) concern is one of the drugs that showed the most promise is long out of patent. There's little financial incentive for drugs companies to manufacture large amounts or invest in clinical trials to see if it works as a Covid treatment. I'm sure that's my excessively cynical mind working overtime. It's an extraordinary circumstance and I expect pharmaceutical companies will forget profit margins in this instance.

tobee · 19/03/2020 01:12

I think there's a drug trial that's starting in Southampton that is being used on very ill patients.

tobee · 19/03/2020 01:15

I remember that with Swine Flu they said that tamiflu worked effectively on it but there was a difficulty with stock levels but they got round it pretty fast. Everyone pulling together!

tobee · 19/03/2020 01:18

F you want to be cynical tryingtoprep, I'm sure a lot of reflected kudos would be good publicity for drug companies for a long time to come, which would look even better if they seemed to be altruistic now.

DippyAvocado · 19/03/2020 01:18

Sounds like there's so much work going on worldwide. I was reading something by the editor of the Lancet who said that even in the early days, (once they accepted it existed!) Chinese scientists immediately began research and wrote up their findings in English so the rest of the world had prompt information. As bad as this could be, we are fortunate to live in times of amazing medical research. Hats off to all the scientists out there working on this.

HappydaysArehere · 19/03/2020 01:24

They are set on discovering a vaccine not only to save themselves and the rest of the world but to make a massive shed load of money. Whichever company manage it first will be printing their own money.

BillywilliamV · 19/03/2020 01:33

They've cured Aids, it took a while but they got there!

over501 · 19/03/2020 01:40

There have been reports today that Avigan, which was designed to treat flu is "clearly effective", although possibly less so in severe cases. But licensing it will still take time - the article that I read (in the Guardian) said possibly May.
