To ask if you will still pay your cleaner.......

.....if you cancel due to self isolation or through fear. I am a self employed cleaner, and so far I've had two suspension of services from clients. No offer to even part pay for my lost income. Both have no symptoms in household, just don't want to let me in their home.

I will continue to work as normal, as until such times as I can't.

Would like to here from others if you have cancelled or are continuing on with a cleaners service.

OP posts:

As long as we are still being paid, and I think we should both be ok, we will continue to pay our cleaner whether she cleans or not.

Same with local family run karate class and music lessons. Both of these have offered to run some form of classes/lessons online or via Skype/facetime.

RishiSunakFanClub · 17/03/2020 16:22

I have just decided to self isolate due to age/current health issues and have cancelled my cleaner from next week. I will be paying her.

leghairdontcare · 17/03/2020 16:23

When people on this thread are saying "if", do you all understand that the current advice is to limit all non-essential contact. To my mind, that definitely includes cleaners.

InDubiousBattle · 17/03/2020 16:24

You won't get a representative answer on here op. This is mn where people are absolutely always unwaveringly decent and honorable (and lie!). My heart goes out to those who are relying on people paying for a service they aren't receiving because sadly most will not pay.
Yellow I think most people don't have a contract with their cleaner.

rbmilliner · 17/03/2020 16:34

I don't have a cleaner but am self employed.
Surely if you gave your a reasonable notice then that's just how things are.
If you cancel at short notice and expect not to pay for whatever reason then your a dickhead.

RishiSunakFanClub · 17/03/2020 17:31

I don't have a contract with my cleaner but will still be paying her because she doesn't deserve to be in hardship because of my decision to self isolate because of my disabilities and other health issues.

InDubiousBattle You're wrong and rude to suggest that any
of us who have said we will be paying for their cleaner is lying. But now we know you think lying on here is normal we can safely ignore your posts.

InDubiousBattle · 17/03/2020 17:36

I meant on mn in general not this thread in particular. I don't want the impression to be that self employed people will be absolutely fine because most people will continue to pay them because sadly I'm not convinced that this will generally be the case. As the op says, they have already had cancellations. They need proper, government support.

keiratwiceknightly · 17/03/2020 17:37

I've said we will pay half if she can't come. If we are the reason she can't come, I'll pay the full amount.

InDubiousBattle · 17/03/2020 18:16

It sounds like you have a personal relationship with your clients op? Hopefully some will continue to use your services or pay you anyway. My friend is a cleaner though an agency, she calls in the morning and gets a list of jobs for the day, today they just said thanks but no thanks and that they'll call when they need her, it's just awful.

Purpleartichoke · 17/03/2020 18:17

We haven’t cancelled yet. If we do, I will cover the notice period, but I won’t pay beyond that.

RainbowsandSnowdrops · 17/03/2020 18:20

Yes absolutely. We’re in stable jobs and intend to keep paying everyone.

I’d also be happy to pay for the local toddler group that we can’t get to at the moment, as I’d be so sad if that business went under.

In our town we’re all trying to support local businesses. Ordering food from restaurants for collection etc.

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 17/03/2020 18:21

As long as we are getting paid then I will do. I don't want her to feel she has to come because she is worried about money and put herself at risk.

RainbowsandSnowdrops · 17/03/2020 18:22

Yellow I think most people don't have a contract with their cleaner.

Completely disagree. Most people are actually decent, I know everyone I’ve spoken to in real life would pay.

SimonJT · 17/03/2020 18:22

I’m paying mine, I also pay her if I go on holiday/cancel her for any reason.

courderoy · 17/03/2020 18:25

I have cancelled but will still pay (while I can).

GeraltOfRivia · 17/03/2020 18:26

If I can't work I can't pay her however much I would want to. We are self employed. I have done a budget that includes keeping her on and we are ok for now but if this is properly long term we'd struggle.

KenDodd · 17/03/2020 18:26

Please, please continue to pay your cleaners if you can afford it.

I've heard of retired (so not suffering income drop themselves) people cancelling their cleaners and not paying them. I know it sucks to pay for a service and not get it but paying them is a little bit of mitigation against the dire situation we are all in.

For what it's worth I neither have nor work as a cleaner.

ThePrincessButtercup · 17/03/2020 18:27

I spoke to mine today and confirmed that she won’t be coming, she’s 70+
I’d like to pay her but as DH is now on JSA we’re already struggling so I’m afraid I can’t.

Mombie2016 · 17/03/2020 18:27

Yep, because I'm not a cunt.

Musicalmistress · 17/03/2020 18:31

Yes. She's due on Fri - if she wants/is able to come, great! But I'll pay her either way.

Blewbell · 17/03/2020 18:32

We've cancelled ours for the next month but I will pay her.

ThePrincessButtercup · 17/03/2020 18:37

So I’m a cunt? Hmm
Thanks for that @Mombie2016, unfortunately I’m a poor cunt, a rather busy NHS nurse with a disabled unemployed, at risk from CV, DH but still a cunt nevertheless.

FusionChefGeoff · 17/03/2020 18:43

We are both still getting paid and as such will continue to pay clubs / membership fees and our cleaner. My yoga teacher says she's looking into virtual classes but I will prob offer to pay her too.

It's all 'sunken' costs as far as our budget goes so I'm happy to support small businesses where I can.

Lightsunbeam · 17/03/2020 18:48

I have told my cleaner it is up to her whether she comes and i will pay her either way. She wants to come this week.

I don’t want her to be in a position where she can’t afford NOT to work, but does anyway when it’s not wise.

Paurie · 17/03/2020 18:49

I will pay because I am on a salary in a secure job - so I feel it is my moral responsibility to pass minimum possible pain down to hourly paid people.
