Covid

To think mumsnet is making more fuss of corona than anywhere else on the Internet, or in general society

Just that! Until I checked mumsnet I realised we had a serious situation on our hands, and that hand washing is essential, and isolating if you have symptoms. And that was that, carried on as normal. But coming on here, and it's people convinced they are going to die because they've got asthma, people refusing to go into work (even though they don't have any symptoms), people planning for the end of the world. I'm sorry, but this just doesn't reflect the rest of the world. I was at my friend's last night, and apart from mentioning her partner needs to be careful because he's got cancer, it wasn't mentioned. Same when I went shopping. On here it's sounds like the world is ending. Aibu??

When you say it doesn't reflect the rest of the world, do you mean all of us outside the UK who are in actual lockdown, with hospitals overrun and military presence on the streets?

Agree. I've become unhealthily addicted to MN of late and I think it has obscured my view of how bad things are. (At least I hope so).

Are you a member of any community groups? That's batshit crazy.

Complete agree. Some of the posts I’ve read on this site are completely nuts.

I think a high proportion of mumsnet suffers from anxiety and other mental health conditions, and that is very very obvious at the moment!

I think there’s definitely a significant proportion who have spent their entire lives hoping for our generation’s Blitz and are now absolutely wetting themselves with excitement. I also think, and this depresses and scares me, that a surprising number of people are very comfortable with the idea of losing a lot of freedom if the flipside is they get to tell others what to do.

Honestly I actually thought it was the opposite. I come on here and I've seen crazy threads, like the girl who asked if she was unreasonable to keep her kids away from her ex for 14 days as he had been abroad twice and she has terminal cancer, people actually told her she was being unreasonable. I see threads about cancelling parties and being told to cancel by a lot but a lot are saying don't cancel. Loads of people on here seem very relaxed about it. But I am in Ireland and we have a lot more closed so maybe day to day a lot of the threads don't tally with life here

Um no. My Dad could very like die from corona and I think the Uk is handling it fucking appallingly.

Ds's school here just shut until at least May. Nobody is seeing each other or going out. Restaurants have shut, town offices have shut, libraries, everything but essential services. Because we aren't selfish assholes.

Two of my friends have it, they're both in their 30s. They feel horrific, they're struggling to care for their young daughter but she's in quarantine too.

Emmmm what about all of us who live in countries who have imposed social distancing and enforced isolation. The U.K. doesn’t reflect the rest of the world so YABU to assume just because you don’t give a shit or think this is seriously the rest of us are with you.

Most of the world is watching Britain and thinking its being handled extremely negligently, I'm ashamed to be British right now.

I wouldn't say your post reflects what I have read on MN. I have read a wide range of thoughts and opinions, the vast majority proportionate.

I'm not going to be seeing anyone but dh and ds for probably two months. And I'm seeing friends in the UK posting in busy restaurants/hairdressers / pubs bragging about how 'tough' they are.

This has opened my eyes to what selfish assholes a lot of Brits are.

Yes. Totally agree. I'm a nurse. I've not noticed any of the hysteria on mumsnet, in real life. Yes the city is quieter than normal. But people are getting on with normal life.

What on earth, OP?!?

Large parts of the world are on lockdown. That's a fact, not mumsnet propaganda. It's people like you that will end up spreading this virus around more than necessary because you believe it to be hype. And if your friends are barely discussing it then that's down to their inability to understand the relevance of this virus, not down to how unimportant it is.

It’s literally all anyone is talking about. I have been asked to go home today because I’m 21 weeks pregnant and a teacher, my HOD didn’t want me to risk it following government guidelines released last night. My DH’s workplace have told staff with cold symptoms to stay home and they have sent people home who have come in regardless, they have also forced two staff members who returned from abroad to self isolate for a fortnight.

Not sure where you’re living but it’s all anyone is talking about where I am.

Speaking as someone on a 15 day nationwide lockdown in France I would say YABU! Much of the world is taking this very seriously.

I think come back to this thread in 2-3 weeks of the UK doing pretty much fuck all to contain it and you'll see just how "much of a fuss" people are making.
