Apart from the footballer Ronaldo I have not heard any other stories of generous acts in the face of this crisis. They could be doing a lot more I feel.

Grin It is hilarious in this day and age that people still think the millionaires and billionaires give a damn. They want us all to fall out over loo roll so they can retreat to their private islands and bunkers. They have new toys and they can't wait to use them.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake lively are giving $1m to food banks

So some of them do care

Can't speak for all, but I know Bill and Melinda Gates have spent billions trying to tackle malaria. And Warren Buffett has donated untold billions to charities as well.

Which is more than I have done. Could they have done more ? Probably. But, then again, so could I.

Rather than descending into personal attacks, it's better to fault the system which allows individuals to amass wealth on that scale. If someone can own a billion dollars (for example) then is there really a moral justification for then allowing them to accrue another billion ? Especially in a country where average savings are measured in the meagre hundreds ?

With all due respect DG, I don't think you have a clue about how the world is run. They don't care about money, they all can print as much money as they like. The elites are an evil little club - psychopaths and paedophiles. The charity thing is all a front. Stop being so naïve.

Grin

If naive were an insult, I would be insulted. You need to say that in the Brexit forum Grin You'd be laughed outta town ....

If we are reliant on the philanthropy of the super wealthy we're doomed - their pick and choose approach to charitable donations is a drop in the ocean compared to the billions avoided in tax - iamapixie is completely right.

Even the 'saintly' Bill and Melinda Gates don't want to pay their fair share - they and other billionaires and large corporations 'negotiate' the amount of tax they are willing to pay and use their power and influence to lobby for laws and regulations that benefit the 1% at the expense of everyone else.

No-one could become a billionaire without a rigged system. Stop with the charity just pay back the millions stolen!

ElliePhillips · 17/03/2020 17:32

I think some are doing something (Ronaldo, that young basketball player, Blake Lively etc) while others have the nerve to say their staff should go without pay and the government should bail them out - SIR Richard Branson should be ashamed of himself!

DGRossetti · 17/03/2020 17:33

No-one could become a billionaire without a rigged system

Didn't I say that ?

Jamclag · 17/03/2020 17:44

Sorry, yes you did DGRossetti - missed it as just very angry Grin

DGRossetti · 17/03/2020 17:46

missed it as just very angry

you're angry ? I just got called "naive" !!!!

Jamclag · 17/03/2020 17:56

Oh I've been called far worse!

However, I do think this rigged system has been created intentionally by individuals and corporations - it didn't materialize out of nowhere. Therefore, those at the top do bear considerable personal responsibility - the one thing money really does provide is choice and they could have chosen to support the public services and infrastructure that were central to their wealth creation in the first place.

Most people who financially help others don't advertise it!! You don't know what people do as it's their business.
