Apart from the footballer Ronaldo I have not heard any other stories of generous acts in the face of this crisis. They could be doing a lot more I feel.

I believe in karma

I don't, it's a load of rubbish.

Reginabambina · 17/03/2020 09:07

There a plenty of stories of the ultra rich making large donations to research. The just rich however a probably too busy fighting fires - trying to avoid major losses as a result of the stock market volatility, if they’re business people trying to save their businesses (and the jobs of their employees).

You get this all the time on mn. It’s like people don’t understand how getting rich and staying rich works.

iamapixie · 17/03/2020 09:19

It would be better still if they all paid their taxes in each country they profit in. So Jeff Bezos lobbied against US taxes, won, and then played the big man by donating to charity: of course the charity donation was a drop in the ocean of both his income and the amount that he should have paid... And now guess who's taking on 100000 new staff....amazon. Refuse to be taxed, bully governments, kill small business. Hopefully a lot of wealthy but not super wealthy people are giving. They just shout about it like the Bezoses of the world.

Skybluepink123 · 17/03/2020 09:39

Richard Branson owns 51% of Virgin Atlantic so he could, in theory, help HIS staff by making a financial contribution himself.

ffswhatnext · 17/03/2020 10:08

Big businesses especially should have to pay their staff. Ok it might mean a wage cut because some
Companies/jobs cannot be done from home. But as a business owner you have to also plan for it all going to shit.
When I’ve employed people in the past, and times have been hard. I didn’t essentially sack them or force them onto ssp. It’s one of the many reasons why you build up a profit, to cover hardships. I’m sure I would have been sued for pulling this.

EffieIsATrinket · 17/03/2020 10:52

If Bransons daughter was an ordinary jobbing doctor maybe he would have a different view.

PlomBear · 17/03/2020 10:55

Who will be buying their products / services when nobody has a job? I guess they will still be rich in their gated mansions.

ffswhatnext · 17/03/2020 12:49

And who will want to work in his mansion after this? These billionaires might find their staff loyal at the moment. Job security and all that. Once everything goes back to ‘normal’ wonder how many will be handing in their notice 🤣

Holdmenow · 17/03/2020 12:54

True philanthropists don’t advertise their good deeds...that’s NOT why they do it and they do A LOT anonymously!

ShanghaiDiva · 17/03/2020 12:58

Jack Ma, the richest man in China, sent testing kits to the USA.
Plenty of Chinese companies provided support and free meals for medical staff at the peak of the outbreak in China.

managedmis · 17/03/2020 12:59

Totally agree.

Jeff Besoz? Buffet? Gates? Royal Family?

These people do not give a shit about the plebs. No fuck given.

scaevola · 17/03/2020 13:04

The Gates Foundatiin is putting squillions into malaria control

The Gates can't tackle every infectious disease, and what they are already doing is one of the most important health initiatives on the planet.

ffswhatnext · 17/03/2020 13:55

And it seems that unless the rich have left shores already they are stuck where they are. Even with all their money, pilots are refusing to fly 🤣

In weeks to come, many of these rich people, like Branson may find
themselves in a situation where they need medical attention, and find themselves like the rest of us, crossing our fingers and hope the nhs can cope. There won't be that many medical people who will ignore what is going on around the world and carry on treating for the big money. Of course, there will be those that will continue to treat the rich, but I wouldn't bank on it, and I certainly wouldn't be treating people like Branson and Besoz are.

People have standards. And crap like those two alone have pulled, not many people will want to be associated with them at all. Would you?

Whiffenpoofs · 17/03/2020 13:55

It reminds me of all those promises made by French billionaires following the Notre Dame fire. €600m promised, but only around $20m raised.

These people are so out of touch with the reality faced by millions in our country.

Unfortunately the attitude of many wealthier people in the UK is that if you are poor, sick, elderly or otherwise vulnerable (precarious job, living situation, relationship) - it is your fault and you should pull yourself up by the bootstraps and 'help yourself'. It fills me with horror.

DGRossetti · 17/03/2020 13:57

Richard Branson should put his hands in his own billionaire pockets and pay Virgin Atlantic staff himself rather than the company ask people to take 8 weeks unpaid leave. [] You do realise he doesn't own the Virgin Atlantic Airline don't you???

What ? Are you saying we should have a whip round for him instead ?

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 17/03/2020 13:58

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have pledged $125 million towards treatments for the virus.

redshoes2017 · 17/03/2020 14:04

What exactly has Ronaldo done ? The 'news story' of him turning his chain of hotels into hospitals has been confirmed as a hoax??

ffswhatnext · 17/03/2020 15:12

Oh, why do I have visions of outrage from people who will start giving hotel owners grief, because ohhh that's a good idea. Solves the issue, hotels have loads of beds.

bevelino · 17/03/2020 15:22

@DGRossetti Branson owns 51% of Virgin Atlantic and as a billionaire has more personal wealth than he can spend in a lifetime. He should help support the airline staff rather than plead to the government for a bailout.

DGRossetti · 17/03/2020 15:24

I was actually supporting that view. We are fiercely agreeing Grin

None. They will all be greatful of their jobs - like the 10's of thousands of jobs the man has created over the years.

ffswhatnext · 17/03/2020 16:41

You will be surprised when everything settles.

There are people who I would never work for. I'm sure I'm not alone. We all have our personal beliefs and principals, that money cannot buy.

Look at the pilots, turning down hundreds of thousands to fly a plane.

MauriceandAlec · 17/03/2020 16:45

YANBU

NeckPainChairSearch · 17/03/2020 16:46

LVMH is switching the use of its perfume labs to produce hand sanitizer, which they're providing free of charge to French hospitals.

Snowflakes1122 · 17/03/2020 16:51

Most will be too busy posting their photos on Instagram of their ‘self isolation’ in some amazing house with enough food for an army instead!
