The Queen is 94 Prince Charles is 71 if the country goes into lock down with over 70s self isolating who is in charge of the country? Can the Queen work remotely from one of her homes or is it Prince William who will need to do any royal meet and greet

Err

1 they absolutely don’t “run the country” they are figureheads at best

2 they don’t “work” they’re glorified ribbon cutters!

Really the very least worrying issue currently. They could easily self isolate and frankly they should. Cancel all royal “Engagements” right now for the safety of any public attending, totally unnecessary risky group gatherings.

“I thought that the new laws have to be run past the Queen” it’s a mere formality - as shown when the queen did nothing about the proroguing of parliament.

You do seem incredibly naive about the monarchy op.

Are you very young? Or did you not grow up in Uk?

DogInATent · 15/03/2020 22:20

Eventually all the bridges (London, Forth, Menai) must fall. Plans are in place for when they do.

GabsAlot · 15/03/2020 22:29

She doesnt run the country i woldnt worry theyre going into isoaltion im sure all engagments will be cancelled

Medievalist · 15/03/2020 22:36

Do you mind me asking how old you are?

Beat me to it Luc1nda....

JeremyCorbynsTopLip · 15/03/2020 22:39

Come on! The queen is basically our tourist trap, I'm sure we face bigger issues then not having someone doing the waving

ironicname · 15/03/2020 22:44

I'm not being mean, but the Queen is not in charge of the country. It's just tradition and symbolism.

Pixxie7 · 15/03/2020 23:01

The queen may be a figure head but she is the one person who can if necessary stop Boris so in reality she is in charge. As for Charles he will be and entirely different kettle of fish, I think things will change when he becomes King.

IHadADreamWhichWasNotAllADream · 15/03/2020 23:05

Plans for inevitable Sad Events may be in place but they probably didn’t include the possibility of them happening in the middle of a lockdown.

What are you talking about???

custardlover · 15/03/2020 23:15

The thing is, we're in charge of the country. That's what voting is all about.

VivaLeBeaver · 15/03/2020 23:19

She’ll have to have a Skype funeral if she dies in all this.

PickAChew · 15/03/2020 23:21

Boris is late 40s.

User721 · 15/03/2020 23:26

Boris is 55

CoronaVera · 15/03/2020 23:28

Boris is not in his 40s!!

Aquamarine1029 · 15/03/2020 23:29

What am I reading....

AdaColeman · 15/03/2020 23:42

Charles & Camilla have already postponed a tour to Bosnia Herzegovina, Jordan and Cyprus that should have taken place this week.

So much of what they do is merely diplomatic window dressing that if they cancel their public engagements it will have little effect.

Musmerian · 16/03/2020 07:47

@Fatnorthernwoman - the Queen has no constitutional power. It’s a formality she has to agree with the government. It would make no difference at all if they all dropped fdiwn dead tomorrow.

countrygirl99 · 16/03/2020 07:58

The Queen couldn't stop Boris illegally promoting Parliament so I don't know why anyone would think she could stop him doing anything else.

Medievalist · 16/03/2020 07:58

Boris is late 40s.

Jesus - Mumsnet really is a mine of misinformation presented as fact.

Even if the queen was 25 nobody would be thinking it would be a good idea to gather loads of random people together to watch her open a factory or whatever.

cdtaylornats · 16/03/2020 08:32

Royal assent isn't a formality it is required by law. No assent no new laws.

Oakmaiden · 16/03/2020 08:35

Thinking about it, the Queen is sort of the Prime Minister's official wife - she does all the hostessing...
