Is anyone else imagining that this could be some kind of social experiment?

Ok so I know it's ridiculous to say really. So this is semi lighthearted. But my mind does have a tendency to run away with itself.

But honestly all of this reminds me of a dystopian film or book. Some kind of government experiment, to see how easily we can be controlled, or to get rid of a few people.

We've had a long stretch - since the end of WW2 of relative calm in the global sense. Yes, there have been wars and terrorism and tragedies, but nothing that has engulfed all or most of the world.

Many (not all) of us are used to having 'first world problems' - we're used to being able to buy or do anything we want within the limits of our wealth and the law. We are used to the 'breaking news' being something that drops off the screen after a few days, even if it's been a major catastrophe for some people, somewhere - not something that keeps escalating and escalating.

We are used to normal service being resumed as soon as possible. Now, we don't know when normal service will come back. That's why it's so frightening and unreal.
