Is anyone else imagining that this could be some kind of social experiment?

Ok so I know it's ridiculous to say really. So this is semi lighthearted. But my mind does have a tendency to run away with itself.

But honestly all of this reminds me of a dystopian film or book. Some kind of government experiment, to see how easily we can be controlled, or to get rid of a few people.

It is an experiment and we are the guinea pigs.
Other countries, with far fewer cases are going into lock down. Because it's the only way to stop the spread.
We aren't as we have to build herd immunity. Never mind all the deaths! Never mind all the long term disruption to business. We will be immune.
Whilst other countries try to slow or stop the spread to a point a vaccination can be ready, that's no good for us! We will let the weak and sick and elderly die, but hey! The rest of us will be immune. The survival of the fittest is more important. Angry

I have heard something along these lines a few times

Or

Funny how it’s happened now or to many were on to those in power and the powerful so something had to be done Hmm

Unsurprisingly they are also regular weed smokers

The UK government’s response will break them if it results in millions dead and even more permanently disabled. The UK has the lowest breastfeeding rates in the western world - it’s no accident that the first ever case in a newborn is in this country, I think there may be more cases in the very young here.

SuckingDieselFella · 14/03/2020 21:46

Anyone who wasn't breastfed will get coronavirus?

Now we know who is behind it. The National Childbirth Trust.

MintChocAddict · 14/03/2020 21:51

grumpyHoonMain has it. Eureka!
It's the breastfeeding what did it!!!
Someone phone the WHO....Hmm

JayAlfredPrufrock · 14/03/2020 21:52

It’s a delicious irony that it came from Pangolins.

A strange part of me is enjoying the sociological side if things.

Butterwhy · 14/03/2020 21:54

@JayAlfredPrufrock did it? I 'adopted' a pangolin after watching a documentary on Netflix about them.

Pixxie7 · 14/03/2020 21:57

I think it may be nature’s way of population reduction.

Fannia · 14/03/2020 21:58

All I can say is if Derren Brown is behind this I will be giving him a slap even if that is not very Stoic.

wonderrotunda · 14/03/2020 22:00

Unfortunately I can see the ‘experiment’ being one in social obedience. We have little testing and open schools (other countries have contingency for key workers children) and a virus that preys on the elderly and unwell. Less money spent on pensions and benefits?

wonderrotunda · 14/03/2020 22:01

And we can’t even go on a protest march to disagree with the policies

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 14/03/2020 22:02

Watch Pandemic on Iplayer. This is what the government have based their stuff on

SuckingDieselFella · 14/03/2020 22:09

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince

Yes Emoji, and I'm sure you already know The Simpsons predicted that Tom Hanks would get coronavirus 15 YEARS AGO.

SuckingDieselFella · 14/03/2020 22:11

@wonderrotunda

Also a very intelligent theory. Because a Conservative government would love to wipe out its key voting demographic.

Babyfg · 14/03/2020 22:16

Totally feeling a conspiracy vibe! I wouldn't be surprised if were the herd immunity guinea pigs.

I've heard quite a few theories that it's to get rid of the aging population, that it was started by eco warriors, that China wanted to reduce its population but it got out of control. I don't fully hand on heart believe any of them (as usually I do like to have quite a bit of science and fact behind my ideas and am not usually hyped by this sort of stuff) but I do think you can not 100% trust the powers above, especially Boris ignoring the who and feeding us to the wolves.

I think whatever happens it will seriously reduce carbon emissions.

TiddyTid · 14/03/2020 22:19

No. I've just been diagnosed with shingles and 111 and GP wanted me on anti virals and out of the system and self isolating ASAP.

WhatICallMyUsername · 14/03/2020 22:24

I find it very odd we know so few details about those who have died in the UK so far, no names have been released so far at all

SuckingDieselFella · 14/03/2020 22:30

Yes it's very odd that the authorities and the press would want to protect the families, let them grieve and not have them treated as plague carriers, etc.

I demand to know who they are. Put their names across the front page of The Sun immediately. Confused

GrumpyHoonMain · 14/03/2020 22:31

I've heard quite a few theories that it's to get rid of the aging population, that it was started by eco warriors, that China wanted to reduce its population but it got out of control.

The Chinese economy is built on grandparents (and sometimes great-grandparents) caring for / raising their grandchildren. There is no way the Chinese government would willingly mess with this system.

I have cousin, who lives in N Italy for the last 20 yers. They have been locked in their town (population 15k) for few weeks, but know not of one case of virus or, especially, death. They are well integrated, know everyone around there. I find it very very strange. My mind wondering away, too.
Also, what about these 20k USA solders, who arrived to ITALY last weekend?

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/03/2020 22:35

My favourite programme as a teen (probably still if I’m honest) was The X-Files so a few conspiracy theories have (not too seriously) crossed my mind!

TiddyTid · 14/03/2020 22:37

My friend was in hospital in Italy until yesterday (not CV) and trust me, it is bad there. She was terrified.

Babyfg · 14/03/2020 22:40

@grumpyhoomain I didn't say I believed any of them or they had any substance to them but they are conspiracy theories I have heard.

The coronavirus is real regardless of why it's here or decisions made. I don't think it's wrong that people are questioning things, we just need to make sure it's backed up. After this pandemic is over, there will be a lot of questions that need answering.

SuckingDieselFella · 14/03/2020 22:43

@Ihavechangedmyname2manytimes Yes it's a complete fantasy especially in northern Italy. The virus thing is pure fiction.

All Italians should ignore the lock down and go out for their cappuccino as normal tomorrow morning. What's the worst that could happen?
