University of Leicester stops lectures from Monday
GiraffeWithSwag · 13/03/2020 15:23
Just that really. Call from son about an hour ago saying he’s had an email stating that all his lectures cancelled from Monday. His girlfriend has been doing a year abroad (USA) and she had an email from Uni of Leicester (earlier this week) stating that if she wanted to come home with immediate effect there would be no grade/result penalty. She’s flying home on Wednesday.
GiraffeWithSwag · 13/03/2020 15:24
No idea if I’ve even posted that properly...first post ever!!
RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 13/03/2020 15:28
I've had an email from my uni today saying that from today there are self isolating students on campus. Apart from that it's business as usual.
I'm assuming as soon as there's a confirmed case the uni will stop all teaching. The problem with that assumption is that it's near on impossible to get tested now.
GiraffeWithSwag · 13/03/2020 15:30
I know....not great. Mind me asking where you are?
RandomMess · 13/03/2020 15:43
Lancaster Uni is he same no classes after today. TBH when you think how many different people go through a lecture hall
In one day....
GiraffeWithSwag · 13/03/2020 15:51
Frightening. DS should still have 3 weeks of term left too. Full of deadlines and presentations that should be going towards his 3rd year results, which obviously contribute to part of his overall degree.
DD is at Uni of York but they breakup today, due back in 14/04 with finals for her Masters starting 06/05/20.
Wilkolampshade · 13/03/2020 15:53
Mine at Edinburgh says all peers in USA flying home, labs and lectures closed/off in Chemistry... course will continuee but not be examined.
She's reading History but hasn't had a lecture for 4 weeks anyway 'cos of strikes... No word yet from Humanities, but the Library' s empty..
bellinisurge · 13/03/2020 15:57
Just met someone at Manchester Met who said they'd closed too. Don't know if it was just their course.
Selfsettling3 · 13/03/2020 15:58
Durham and Northumbria at Newcastle are also closed to students but are apparently continuing online.
LittleBoyJuly2020 · 13/03/2020 16:01
My son is at Bham City Uni and they're now working from home for the remainder of his module.
They advised students in student accommodation to go home because if someone in their accommodation get it, they will all be quarantined.
SoCrimeaRiver · 13/03/2020 16:04
But they aren't shutting the library though (it's also on the Leicester University website). One way to encourage students to congregate together - move to online lectures and give them a university library full of IT.
Northernsoullover · 13/03/2020 16:07
My university hasn't closed yet. I've emailed to say its unlikely I'll be back in. A few of my fellow students have also decided not to return.
Reginabambina · 13/03/2020 16:14
Ours had already canceled May exams. Not clear what they’ll be doing instead
parietal · 13/03/2020 16:17
our uni has gone online. that means face-to-face teaching for undergrads has moved to online lectures. but halls & libraries are still open. Students can chose to stay on campus or go home. Staff will still be going in to work (but can work from home if they want).
so this is not a full shut down like some US universities, but it is an important step to flatten the curve.
Babyroobs · 13/03/2020 16:20
There are cases in Leicester, and likely many more we don't know about.
CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 13/03/2020 16:21
I find the range of action taken by institutions crazy - from closing and cancelling exams, to doing nothing.
Guess which mine is doing..
In my job I'm based at one uni, but deal with a number of others. Who are all doing something different. Trying to advise students is nigh-on impossible. I wish the government had provided a bit more guidance on this.
Babyroobs · 13/03/2020 16:21
I mean case in the Leicester area, not specifically at Leicester Uni.
VivaLeBeaver · 13/03/2020 16:22
There's not been a single case in Leicester
I thought there had been 2 cases in Leicester, one of which is a dmu student.
My uni have said they won’t close until to,d to by the govt. not sure why there’s such a discrepancy....maybe they’ll be swayed by others closing.
GiraffeWithSwag · 13/03/2020 16:32
There’s nothing been reported in the news as yet though on the universities that have closed, or moved to just online lectures. Very mixed responses nationally and very confusing for students and families alike.
Prepenultimate · 13/03/2020 16:43
A Loughborough Uni student is a confirmed case. There is another in the county but no confirmed cases in city of Leicester.
Prepenultimate · 13/03/2020 16:46
I suspect universities are being driven, at leat in part, by other agendas.
Pull the rug out from the striking lecturers. Find a way to make teaching staff deal with the problems that the striking has caused for students' education. Show the government they are independent and can make their own decisions??????????
Wilkolampshade · 13/03/2020 16:57
Ah, ok, NOW she's had an e-mail... Edinburgh moving teaching online, no exams for 1st and 2nd year students, online 3rd and 4th...no detail about libraries tho...
GiraffeWithSwag · 13/03/2020 17:10
Regina where are you if you don’t mind me asking? Cancelling May exams is a massive step imo.
Prepenultimate I agree.
