University of Leicester stops lectures from Monday

Just that really. Call from son about an hour ago saying he’s had an email stating that all his lectures cancelled from Monday. His girlfriend has been doing a year abroad (USA) and she had an email from Uni of Leicester (earlier this week) stating that if she wanted to come home with immediate effect there would be no grade/result penalty. She’s flying home on Wednesday.

First confirmed case at our uni, partially closing one building. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I suspect universities are being driven, at leat in part, by other agendas.
Pull the rug out from the striking lecturers. Find a way to make teaching staff deal with the problems that the striking has caused for students' education. Show the government they are independent and can make their own decisions??????????

Nonsense. This would be one hell of an expensive and self-damaging reaction to striking lecturers. The majority of us were not on strike, and at some universities no one was. The decision, which will see universities lose huge amounts of money and doubtless result in redundancies down the line, has been made from a safety perspective.

O that's quite a movement of young people round the country if they return home. Same in reverse in a few weeks. Both those events will be good for spreading disease round the country (and possibly internationally, depending on where students live)

Same at UEA. Son called last night and will be home earlier!

Online lectures on Monday at another London uni, no cases as far as I know but I can see this happening all week at least.
