Anyone else have a child with symptoms?

Hello there

So DS 10 developed a dry cough yesterday. No temperature. Has anyone else's child had something like this? Just wondering how it may pan out.

The information is next to useless. Obviously he can't get tested. The advice is to self isolate if you have a cough but no temperature, but then the government website says that the big symptom is a temperature.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else is, or has been, in the same boat.

DS1 has a temp today and sore chest when he breathes. No cough (yet). It's my mother's 70th birthday tomorrow and she's adamant that I should drive across the country to go out for a meal with her and my father anyway! Both her and especially my almost 80yo father have health conditions that make them more vulnerable - I don't know what she's thinking! They've been on a Warner holiday all week, they expected it to be quiet but said the hotel was packed with elderly folks in wheelchairs and with oxygen tanks I refuse to be responsible for making them ill, so she's not happy with me. No idea what else I can do to get them to take this more seriously.

My son has developed a dry cough and a wheeze. Asthmatic so kept him home. No temperature either.

Hopefully just a common cold. This is such a weird time, if anyone coughs in public people freak out.

My son has a temp, is wheezy and has a cough. Took him to the pharmacist, who sent him to the Docs. He’s on steroids and antibiotics.

Neither the pharmacist of the Dr mentioned the Corona Virus. I’ve kept him off nursery and away from the elderly.

11 yo DS has a headache, temperature and shortness of breath and has felt unwell since Tuesday.

He is prone to chest infections and had previously been prescribed an inhaler and steroids after the last bad cold so this could be the same thing, but of course we are following advice to self isolate. We were told we'd get a callback from 111 but not sure if we will now. I'll be calling back if his breathing worsens and am keeping a close eye.

I hope your DC are feeling better soon.

12yo dd has a new cough. A child at her school was sent home with a cough today.

Do we all isolate or just her?

This is just ridiculous.

My 6yo has a dry cough and while I have no doubt that's all it is he will not be allowed at school next week. Hoping my other dcs don't get it as I'd struggle to find childcare for much longer than that. Frontline NHS worker so can't not go to work.

My 4 year old has a temperature and a nasty cough. I have told his nursery and will be keeping him at home for 7 days. Can my daughter go to school next week as long as she has no symptoms? Or does she need to be isolated as well? My work have already told me not to come into the office.

7 yr old DS has a temp today. So we kept him off school and we will all stay in for 7 days. The government advisor on radio 4 said whole households should stay in, but I don't think they have made that very clear in their messaging. It's easy for us as we work from home and DS2 doesn't go to nursery yet.

Other symptoms are just that he feels a bit rotten, has a headache, but not much of a cough so far.

We all had this a few weeks ago followed by a temperature and kept kids off school for a few days. If your child has a cough your entire household needs to isolate under current guidelines.

11yo with a dry cough here, she’s got a snotty nose too which makes me think more likely to be regular cold but I am self isolating anyway.

Yep DS was sent home from school today

Initially no temperature (36.3) but pale with flushed cheeks, headache and stiff neck. Within a few hours he's developed a cough and temp is now 37.2 - DS never ever gets coughs and colds, sniffles is worst he's ever had.

As at yesterday there were no confirmed cases at his school or even in either the town where his school is or where we live and we haven't been away anywhere or (as far as we know) near anyone who has, although DS said there are children in his school who had been to Italy and been in school (not places where guidance was to self isolate).

That said, when I collected him it was like a conveyor belt of parents collecting sick DC!!

@Reginabambina can you please link to the current guidelines saying that the entire household needs to isolate if a child has a cough please? I think it makes sense, but I’m pretty sure they are not saying this yet.

My DD has a fever that's coming down with drugs but we will be isolating her, which seems like the better saying as she won't isolate herself willingly . She has a cough lingering from a couple of weeks ago that isn't any worse. DS' school have asked that we don't send him in either but current advice is that there's no need for him to be off. Makes life easier for me to have them both off anyway.

I don't think it's been very clear that the whole household needs to self isolate. When I last checked the 111 info today it definitely didn't state that was the case.

I haven't left the house in any case but my DD has been going to school as usual.

I appreciate the guidance is changing quickly but It's frustrating how patchy it has been.

DC (10) is off with a dry, persistent cough, sore throat, tiredness. She's a bit wheezy and breathless, and her very mild asthma seems to be playing up, which is very unusual.

Phoned GP re: changing her asthma meds. After I described her symptoms they didn't want her going into either the clinic or even us (parents) visiting the pharmacy. They said it was hard for parents of younger children to fully isolate them, and even we parents should avoid mixing in public. Got meds delivered in the end.

We're working from home whilst looking after her. It's really hard to keep her isolated as you would a teenager or adult. She's a frightened, nervy 10 year old, but not too ill. We're keeping 2 metres apart as far as possible, separate towels/bathrooms, never-ending hand washing. She's not going out and the entire family is now staying in. Will wait for further instructions before deciding what to do about DS next week. DD will be off until at least Wednesday.

@PyjamaLlama @Tomliboosrule it's best to keep the whole household self isolated due to cross infection risk, even if someone in the household isn't showing symptoms

@FrangipaniBlue I'm sure you know this, but with headache and stiff neck, keep a very close eye on him/speak to 111. It can be a sign of meningitis.

@buttonmoonb4tea I completely agree. That makes perfect sense, however, it doesn’t alter the fact that it’s not what the Government guidelines are saying at the moment.

@PyjamaLlama the rest of the world are looking on in horror at the UK government and its advice so I would go with what makes sense and do what is sensible.

If your DC isn't showing any symptoms, they could be carrying the virus, go to school and pass the virus on to anyone, including the vulnerable.

This is how we are in a situation of a pandemic.

@buttonmoonb4tea I do agree with this and it’s what we are doing, however, lots of people won’t. I have read and read through the guidelines, just to be able to go back and quote to my employer that I also need to self isolate, but it’s just not there.

So we've had a right shit show this week with dd aged 8. I posted about her earlier on in the week. She was diagnosed with a chest infection after an x ray-A&E dr said they were only testing those who had travelled so it was discounted. We live in London-everyone is travelling at some point! Just gets worse and worse. Gp refused 3 times to see her saying call 111. They had waiting times of 90 minutes-kept getting cut off. Been on high dose antibiotics for 5 days now -dd still has temp of 39+, not eating, drinking a little, sleeping constantly, now developed a cough. Finally awaiting a callback from dr at 111. Will update on their advice. Gp told me to go to local walk in centre at the small hospital nearby! ( which I didnt) my other 2 kids will be very happy if they need to be kept at home too!

@PyjamaLlama maybe they aren’t?! This is what we’ve been told by nursery but NHS website doesn’t mention other family members.
