Coronavirus: does the government want it to spread?

AIBU to feel that the government’s response to the Coronavirus is so woefully inadequate that it amounts to a form of eugenics? I’m wondering if it is a deliberate policy to allow its spread to expunge “expensive” elderly or unwell citizens. Nothing was (or is being) done to stop more cases entering the UK or to halt the spread. There was an almost gleeful announcement the other day that it was now too late to eradicate it from this country. Why oh why is the government being so inert, especially in view of the action being taken in Ireland/Italy?

What do you want them to do? It is a virus - it will spread. Thats just nature. We can slow it down but we are not going to be able to stop it. All we can do is help to minimise the impacts

The80sweregreat · 12/03/2020 15:48

It's a tough situation. I expected Nicola Sturgeon to say she was shutting schools but she didn't!
I'm not sure what the thinking is really.
It seems an odd time and people are confused.

Worriedmum54321 · 12/03/2020 15:49

Can't help thinking it would be a very different response if it were a labour government. This lot are putting the short term good of the economy far ahead of people's lives

MrsItsNoworNotatAll1 · 12/03/2020 15:49

Yanbu.
This is the Tory wet dream. A Virus that will kill off the elderly, and the sick so they won't have to pay pensions and benefits.

The80sweregreat · 12/03/2020 15:50

Lots of confusing messages are being broadcast. I'm not sure what to think really!

Tootletum · 12/03/2020 15:51

Load of crap sorry. Germany has three times the cases and also isn't curtailing people's freedom to make their own decisions. They only close schools in affected areas for example.

AgentJohnson · 12/03/2020 15:51

FFS! Any supposed ‘savings’ would be negated by the much greater effect it was having on world economies.

Splitsunrise · 12/03/2020 15:51

Post. In. The. Correct. Topic!!!

This is the Tory wet dream. A Virus that will kill off the elderly, and the sick so they won't have to pay pensions and benefits.

Aren’t the elderly their main voters.

VegetableMunge · 12/03/2020 15:52

I'm not sure Boris has done much thinking at all. He's frequently seemed overwhelmed since becoming PM. And sometimes before.

SelfIsolating · 12/03/2020 15:52

Sadly I think you're right op. Even more effective than austerity.

maslinpan · 12/03/2020 15:53

They are Tories, they don't want shops to shut and the tourists to stay away, why would they? Are you seriously suggesting that they are welcoming a population cull of the elderly? I imagine the stock market freefall is going to be dictating a lot of their decisions, why would they be wanting a virus to get completely out of control when Nadine Dorries has just proved the point that we are all vulnerable and she is one of their colleagues!

AgentJohnson · 12/03/2020 15:54

Some of the opportunistic ‘further my own bias’ bullshit —theories— are just getting tiresome.

SilverySurfer · 12/03/2020 15:54

No.

SFS

hamstersarse · 12/03/2020 15:55

Such hysteria.

What do you want him to do?!?!

It’s a virus that will spread.

Shutting down the economy will be a double whammy to people.

dappledsunshine · 12/03/2020 15:55

There's a whole entire section dedicated to Coronovirus where you can discuss this as much as you like 🤷‍♀️

MsMD · 12/03/2020 15:55

Isn't there like a whole board about this damn virus

DowntownAbby · 12/03/2020 15:56

Why do people insist on posting everything in AIBU when there's a special place for Coronavirus panicking.

Klonda · 12/03/2020 15:58

The Tories are hardly going to wilfully kill off their core supporters

Songsofexperience · 12/03/2020 16:00

What do you want them to do? It is a virus - it will spread.

The issue I think is we can't cope, full stop. If as predicted up to 80% of the population catch it, that's 52million with the virus. 4% of those may need oxygen, that's 2 million. We only have 4000 ICU beds nationwide, already mostly occupied. How do you cope with 2 million severely sick people on top of the regular hospital pressures?

Songsofexperience · 12/03/2020 16:02

Even if those 2 million are spread over 3-4 months, that's an awful lot of extra pressure for the NHS.

tiredanddangerous · 12/03/2020 16:03

No. The elderly vote Tory for a start!

Bagelsandbrie · 12/03/2020 16:05

@MrsItsNoworNotatAll1 completely agree.

CharlieCoCo · 12/03/2020 16:09

Are people really thinking the government is voluntarily killing off the elderly to have less resident? I keep hearing this theory but surely people dknt really actually believe this Hmm

Catting · 12/03/2020 16:11

And the left wonder why nobody takes them seriously 😒
