Coronavirus: does the government want it to spread?

AIBU to feel that the government’s response to the Coronavirus is so woefully inadequate that it amounts to a form of eugenics? I’m wondering if it is a deliberate policy to allow its spread to expunge “expensive” elderly or unwell citizens. Nothing was (or is being) done to stop more cases entering the UK or to halt the spread. There was an almost gleeful announcement the other day that it was now too late to eradicate it from this country. Why oh why is the government being so inert, especially in view of the action being taken in Ireland/Italy?

The government has already been killing the poor and disabled off by cuts to benefits - universal credit and cuts to disability benefits show they do not give a flying fuck about those sections of the public. If they genuinely wanted to protect these sections of the public during the corona outbreak they would implement similar things to other countries - but they’re not (as yet). It’s no surprise is it. It’s basically every (healthy) man for himself and screw everyone else. Which let’s face it is typical Tory.

AiryFairyMum · 12/03/2020 16:19

They aren't known for putting ill, disabled and elderly people above profit are they? It'll vastly reduce the adult social care bill, and get rid of NHS bed blockers, if that's how you see them. I don't feel that way: I'd like to keep my elderly parents and PILs, but I'd imagine Dominic Cummins may feel differently.

Pandamoore · 12/03/2020 16:20

Thet want it to spread a little now and will implement measures at a certain point to have the spread become a curve shape, over a longer time period. The argument being that if some ppl get it now, before the peak then the hospitals will find it easier to manage. But truthfull they are playing god with lives because the best option (to shut everything down as other countries have asap) would hurt their pockets.

So yes, they want people to get sick. They made no attempt to stop the illness at the very start and so now, it will always be around.

LizB62A · 12/03/2020 16:21

Are people really thinking the government is voluntarily killing off the elderly to have less resident? I keep hearing this theory but surely people dknt really actually believe this hmm

I wouldn't be at all surprised - the Tories don't really come across as compassionate and it is pretty much all about money, isn't it.....

BiologyIsReal · 12/03/2020 16:26

Gordon Bennett - anything for a pot shot at the Tories. The Government got criticised over Brexit for not apparently listening to the experts. Now they are getting criticised for apparently listening to experts.

(I am not particularly left or right wing, by the way). But this isn't a party political issue FFS).

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/03/2020 16:31

.
This is the Tory wet dream. A Virus that will kill off the elderly, and the sick so they won't have to pay pensions and benefits.

If you entertain this suggestion why don’t you ask yourself why they would like to kill off the elderly?

Those are their voters, after all.

DowntownAbby · 12/03/2020 17:19

I'm with you on that @BiologyIsReal

It would not matter if Boris actually found the cure for CV himself, MN would still be gunning for the Tories.

This current situation is beyond all politics, globally. I wish people would just put the hatchets away for a while.

Possibly because this government’s been voted in for the next five years. I suspect Boris isn’t focusing on what will happen in 5 years’ time but how he will balance the books now, he will have had his power and glory. Après moi, le déluge.

Rather than the nonsensical suggestion that this is a tory wet dream, the opportunity for panic and anxiety is a wet dream for the likes of Russia who will take any opportunity to undermine the West, and especially the UK. I do wonder how many of these panic-inducing threads are actually the work of malicious foreign agencies trying to cause panic. Hopefully quite a lot. Otherwise, we have even more fruitloops and fucknuggets in our midsts than I had previously estimated.

The80sweregreat · 12/03/2020 17:54

To be fair it's not just mumsnetters 'gunning ' for Boris : the DM comments section was seething! Not just trolls either!
His taken a bit of a gamble here. Might pay off , or might not.

TooTrueToBeGood · 12/03/2020 18:00

His taken a bit of a gamble here. Might pay off , or might not.

The thing is, he is not Commander in Chief or a dictator. He may be a blonde, bumbling fuckwit who is in way over his head but he is not Trump. He has influence certainly, but not absolute power, nowhere near it.

Harpingon · 12/03/2020 18:15

It's a bit of a social experiment, might work for some but I would be very scared if I was elderly.

hamstersarse · 12/03/2020 18:40

The healthcare system can cope right now. There is no need to shut everything down...yet!!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/03/2020 20:22

Boris is planning to stay on for much longer than 5 years, so I doubt he's turned into a mean pensioner killing machine.

I suppose he's trying to balance the handling of the virus and the needs of the economy so the sick and the old can have their benefits and pensions despite the virus.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/03/2020 20:23

And I don't even like Boris.

The80sweregreat · 12/03/2020 21:53

The rumour mill is in full swing in my little town. People tapping their nose going ' give it another week' ? people fighting over the pasta / loo rolls , people saying that offices are shutting down already. People hinting they know things!
I don't know what's true or isn't true but I think people are a bit more scared than they they were a few days ago! Me included.
I don't know what to think anymore.

Lostkeyagain · 12/03/2020 21:53

And I don't even like Boris.

Well you must either be a fortune teller or Boris’ intimate confidant if you can tell us his future plans with such confidence.

Maybe I am.

ihaveaquestionplease · 12/03/2020 22:06

Gleeful?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/03/2020 22:07

Not at all.

Worried, as we all are.

But not a fan of wild murder mysteries.

ihaveaquestionplease · 12/03/2020 22:11

@ChardonnaysPetDragon I was referring to the op

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/03/2020 22:13

Oh sorry!
