Did anyone else get swine flu during that outbreak?

As an asthmatic who has just had major surgery, i am absolutely bricking myself!

When we had the swine flu outbreak one of my colleagues came to work with it and passed it on to the whole team despite them saying that any sickness would not be counted for targets.

It was quite frankly very scary. I had to go to a hospital and they wouldn't let me in the building. A nurse came out with a mask to the outdoor seating area and gave me some Tamiflu. I was really struggling to breathe.

Did anyone else get the swine flu?

My immune system has never fully recovered so frankly I'm expecting coronavirus - I catch everything else going around since then

legodisasterzone · 12/03/2020 10:32

My husband got it. He had to be isolated at home and was given Tamiflu.
He was actually very ill, but the other hard bit was how much work it was to keep the germs contained.
I was pretty much walking round with anti bac wipes and hand sanitiser and telling the kids to wash their hands.
He made a full recovery though and it didn’t linger too long l.

legodisasterzone · 12/03/2020 10:33

Oh and none of us caught it.

lyralalala · 12/03/2020 10:38

The other legacy of swine flu is the children who developed narcolepsy as a result of the vaccine. There are two in my DDs support group (she already had strong signs before then)

The rush for a vaccine from the likes of trump makes me nervous. These things need to be done properly for good reasons

ashtyler · 12/03/2020 10:39

Yes. Me and my two year old son. Told to stay at home and send a friend to collect the Tamiflu and drop it on the doorstep. We were ill for six-nine weeks.

Thekindyoufindinasecondhand · 12/03/2020 10:40

Yes had it, and so did my bf at the time.

Shosha1 · 12/03/2020 10:40

Yes. Have underlying health issues. Asthma and Lupus.

Was very very ill. First few days at home I dont remember much, day three I got up to go to toilet and collapsed. Was taken to hospital with blue light and siren going and spent 4 days in ICU and another week before I was allowed home

One lung collapsed and I had pneumonia in the other.

I worked as a CM then and one of my children brought it into the setting. All the children got it to varying light degrees.

This time I am retired and staying in as much as possible. DH still working but changing and showering before I see him and sleeping in spare room.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 12/03/2020 10:42

No but it hit my office. 4 people came down with it. We had a day off for them to do a deep clean and after that no one else got it. I must admit I was pretty nervous about it at the time as I was pregnant. I was in the third trimester though so not as high risk as people in earlier stages (and also not eligible for the vaccine at the time).

HowDoesTheCow · 12/03/2020 10:42

I was pregnant and vaccinated, DH and DC were not and all had some bloody awful illness but weren't tested. The photos of them that Christmas are nasty - DH is just grey.

Adviceplease1234 · 12/03/2020 10:44

Yes my brother and I both got it. It was probably the most ill I remember feeling. I was still living with my parents at the time and my mum has very bad asthma but luckily didn't catch it. She's very worried about coronavirus though.

VivaLeBeaver · 12/03/2020 10:46

As a midwife I cared for a lady who died from it. Tragic.

I think dh had it. He was in bed for days and crawled down the landing to get to the loo. I left him to go to work and remember telling dd who was about 10yo at the time to check on daddy every 30 mins and if she couldn't wake him to ring me!!!!

IrritableBitchSyndrome · 12/03/2020 10:46

I had it. Was in bed for a week taking tamiflu, then very wobbly for a second week. I was sent a kit to swab my nose and post to a lab. I got a letter months later to say I had tested positive for swine flu.

VivaLeBeaver · 12/03/2020 10:47

And the odd thing is I do not remember ever feeling scared that I might catch it. There wasn't the same fear that people, inc me, have this time. I think it's so much worse this time.

Windyatthebeach · 12/03/2020 10:49

I have a good immune system - never had a cold or flu. Never get d&v. I had swine flu.
Rotten!!

Batqueen · 12/03/2020 10:49

My housemate had it (confirmed) and was really ill but the rest of us didn’t get it (afaik) even though one of the others spend a lot of time taking care of him and I had to clear up his sick 🤢

hairyxmasturkey · 12/03/2020 10:49

I had it. I was a student teacher and was told to come in regardless. I had two days off but it was not taken well. I would be stronger now but I was frightened of letting people down at the time. There will be lots of teachers in this position now I expect :(

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 12/03/2020 10:50

Me and my husband had it but the kids didn’t catch it. It was hands down the worst I have ever been!! I am really hoping I skip this oneConfused

alwaystiredzz · 12/03/2020 10:53

A family members baby has recently caught it in the neo natal unit of a hospital - it's still kicking around

UpToonGirl · 12/03/2020 10:54

Yes, I had it. I remember calling in sick to work and crying at boss down the phone, which was very unlike me! Got swab kit and Tamiflu through the post the day after calling the helpline. DH had it but didn't realise for the first day as his seemed much milder than mine.

missboots · 12/03/2020 10:55

My 4 year old had it and ended up in hospital - we didn't know what it was until she had swabs (by which time she was almost better) and it was confirmed to be swine flu. Weirdly that was in 2015 so not when it was declared a pandemic in 2009. I guess it's now just one of the strains of flu that does the rounds.

Chaotica · 12/03/2020 10:55

XP had it (when he wasn't ex) but 2 DCs andn I escaped despite living together and not isolating him (nor even taking any precautions). He was really ill, probably should have gone to hospital. When I went out, I phoned every couple of hours to make sure he was still able to breathe.

Butterwhy · 12/03/2020 10:56

No, quite surpringly because I worked in a pharmacy at the time and the amount of people who would come in coughing everywhere to pick up their Tamiflu was astounding.

Sparrowlegs248 · 12/03/2020 10:56

My sister had it, then me then my husband. It was bloody awful I was off work for 4 weeks. Tried to go back after 3 and ended up in bed for another week.

PrayingandHoping · 12/03/2020 10:56

Yes I had it (day after I had my horse pts. Was a great weekend!!!)

Then had a severe allergic reaction to tamiflu and ended up having to have medical attention for that!

MaitlandGirl · 12/03/2020 11:09

DD2 and I got it, 6 weeks before we were due to emigrate. I was so unwell DW kept waking me up as she thought I was dead. I’ve never been so sick in my life.

The morning we flew out I had a GPs appointment for a ‘fitness to fly’ letter and was ill for another 9 mths with bronchitis symptoms.
