Did anyone else get swine flu during that outbreak?

As an asthmatic who has just had major surgery, i am absolutely bricking myself!

When we had the swine flu outbreak one of my colleagues came to work with it and passed it on to the whole team despite them saying that any sickness would not be counted for targets.

It was quite frankly very scary. I had to go to a hospital and they wouldn't let me in the building. A nurse came out with a mask to the outdoor seating area and gave me some Tamiflu. I was really struggling to breathe.

Did anyone else get the swine flu?

No one I know got it or knew anyone with it.

SirVixofVixHall · 12/03/2020 09:54

Yes, I had it and my daughters, then very small. Very high temperatures for well over a week. It was frightening. Kind GP came to the house to check my dds, and was shocked at how thin they looked.

Jeleste · 12/03/2020 09:54

I have family living overseas where it was very wide spread. They all got it at all ages. Youngest was 2 years old, olderst 73. Nobody actually had it badly enough to go to the hospital and luckily they all recovered quite quickly.

JJSS123 · 12/03/2020 10:03

I had it. Didn’t move out of bed for a week it was awful. The tamiflu helped. My immune system has been ruined ever since and I’m now terrified.

HalfBloodPrincess · 12/03/2020 10:06

My son had it - he was 3.5 and caught it after having his booster jabs.
He was mostly asleep for nearly a week

Nat6999 · 12/03/2020 10:06

Yes, had to ring helpline, was given an appointment at a pharmacy to get Tamiflu & have throat swab, then had to wait for text message to start Tamiflu.

MyDcAreMarvel · 12/03/2020 10:06

Yes my 11 year daughter she was unwell but fine at home, no more poorly than when she has had other viruses.

MyDcAreMarvel · 12/03/2020 10:06

She had tamiflu.

Somebodystired · 12/03/2020 10:07

I had it, I was in my late teens. I honestly thought I was dying!

viccat · 12/03/2020 10:09

Yes, I did. I'm pretty sure I caught it on public transport in London because I was in the final stages of writing my MA dissertation at the time and hadn't been to the uni campus or work in the week before I became ill. I had however taken the tube/train most days.

It was probably the worst flu I've had - when people say you know you have flu and not a cold because you can't even get out of bed, they are right. I lived in a tiny flat at the time and remember how hard it was to make it to the kitchen to feed my cat! The cough and the exhaustion went on for a long time.

Elouera · 12/03/2020 10:09

I used to work at a company where we tested people and looked for swine flu antibodies. It was very surprising that some people claimed they never had it, never have flu like symptoms, yet they showed antibodies. Either they'd had minor cold symptoms, or came in contact enough to show antibodies, yet never felt ill themselves.

We may find its the same with corona, that some people get a sub-clinical dose, where they dont show symptoms, yet have been exposed. I never caught it that I'm aware of, and worked in the NHS at the time!

HairyFloppins · 12/03/2020 10:09

Yes me and dd did. We phoned up a number and got a prescription for tamiflu. A relative ended up in hospital.

SpiltMilk100 · 12/03/2020 10:10

I had it. Can't remember how long I was unwell for but my DM quarantined me in my bedroom and left water and toast outside the door for me. I lost a lot of weight. I tried to ring in sick for work and my boss wouldn't accept it and demanded I come in, I was only young so didn't really argue. Was diagnosed the same day and when I rang back to say it was confirmed as swine flu she didn't know what to say and slammed the phone down on me 😂

BooSurprise · 12/03/2020 10:14

My husband got it, I didn’t despite being in close contact- still shared a bed etc

ACautionaryTale · 12/03/2020 10:14

I had it. Was dog sick for about a week, then just sick for a week after. It wiped me out for a couple of months in the sense that I travel for work but will often opt for a long commute rather than stay in hotels. I had to stay in hotel a LOT for couple of months as I was sleeping 12-14 hours a day

Porcupineinwaiting · 12/03/2020 10:15

No, but one of my neighbours died of it shortly after giving birth. Sad I always think of her when I hear people saying it was a fuss over nothing.

lyralalala · 12/03/2020 10:15

I had it. I got quarantined in my sister’s house as she was on holiday and I went down to feed her cats.

I felt like death. My asthma was all over the shop. All I wanted to do was sleep and the health board people kept ringing randomly day and night to make sure I was following the rules. One time they came to the door with two bemused police officers as I slept the phone ringing because I was ill!

My DH had to being shopping over and leave it at the door. I basically lived on noodles and Ribena as they were quick

Bizarrely they never found out who I got it from, and no-one else I’d been in contact with caught it either.

SwordBilledHummingbird · 12/03/2020 10:15

Yes, I had it. Needed two weeks off work.

Allflightscancelled · 12/03/2020 10:17

I got it and I was put in isolation in hospital for 5 days because I was having chemotherapy for breast cancer at the time so was immunosuppressed. I was treated so, so well.

I think I must have been pretty lucky with it, because although I felt pretty ill for a few days, I mostly remember being very, very bored

Chaosandmadness · 12/03/2020 10:19

I had swine flu. Can't really remember much apart from sleeping a lot and having to take Tamiflu. I'm refusing to get coronavirus. I did my bit with swine flu WinkGrin

Quartz2208 · 12/03/2020 10:20

Yes I did 2 weeks of feeling awful high temps tight chest didnt want to eat or drink
2 weeks that followed no appetite, my ears constantly popping (have no idea why) general mailaise and tiredness
another 2 or so weeks of just not feeling quite right.

The whole thing was at least a 6 week recovery and I had it moderately!

AlternativePerspective · 12/03/2020 10:23

Yes. I was wiped out for a week but physically exhausted for months afterwards. My then DH had to work from home as per his company’s instruction as he’d been in contact with me but neither he or DS caught it.

Interestingly I did have an underlying heart condition at that point but I didn’t know about it. It was the seasonal flu 3.5 years ago which put me in hospital and has led to me now needing a transplant (well, I’m on the right side of the list currently but it will happen).

TulipsInAVase · 12/03/2020 10:23

I was vaccinated against it because I was pregnant. I strongly believe DH and DS1 got it (DS1 was three), and baby DS2 had it very mildly. They were not tested, but the fact they got ill and I didn't have any symptoms at all, and that the baby who was being breastfed only got it very mildly, and the fact that it was so horrible (Ds1 didn't get dressed for nine days) makes me think it was swine flu.

fairgame84 · 12/03/2020 10:25

Yes I had it. I worked in A&E and caught it from a patient because we didn't have the correct PPE. I ended up sleeping for about 4 days then went back to work. I managed to get vaccinated for it about 1 month after I went back to work.

I still work in the NHS and they are not prepared for coronavirus. We had 2 suspected on our ward yesterday and it was a farce.

FoldyRoll · 12/03/2020 10:28

Both DDs (then a baby and preschooler) had it as did DH and I. Kids were hot and listless for several days, for us adults it was very mild. Only realised after testing that our slight sore throats were swine flu.
