Holy shit, this is unreal.

You won’t be able to enter the US if you have been in the restricted area in the past 14 days so not as simple as routing via Heathrow

How would anyone know, though? It’s not like EU citizens get their passports stamped on entering the U.K. I don’t see how passengers’ movements can be verified. I’m probably missing something, but it just doesn’t seem workable.

LaCerbiatta · 12/03/2020 07:17

But passports in Europe are not stamped. How will they know?

Trump should be worrying about the fact that Americans are not being tested or self isolating because they cant afford to due to lack of paid leave and healthcare to tose without insurance.

It's going to explode massively beyond the point of any possible containment.

Applejaxx · 12/03/2020 07:21

Not just the UK, but Ireland is excluded as well.

SebandAlice · 12/03/2020 07:23

Ireland excluded as well. Maybe as they are both islands

cologne4711 · 12/03/2020 07:25

Is Iceland excluded too?

Frazzled2207 · 12/03/2020 07:25

Most ridiculous is that it only applies to European citizens not Americans!

Quite right that Europeans could come via the Uk and not get their passport stamped. Bonkers.

Frazzled2207 · 12/03/2020 07:32

Actually although they could try to come via the uk they would most likely be turned away at the us border with an EU passport

Lordfrontpaw · 12/03/2020 07:35

Is that Europeans or people flying from Europe? My sister is due to come over from the US in a few weeks. I’m not sure they’ve actually thought this out and it’s just a distraction to the countryside infections they’ve had in the states. I’m amazed he didn’t suggest a wall around the entire country (or maybe Europe?)

Frazzled2207 · 12/03/2020 07:43

Most Europeans but not british. If your sister is either british or American that won't affect her (yet)

Userwhatevernumber · 12/03/2020 07:44

Passports are electrically monitored aren’t they? They can track a person’s movements bu their passport

ivykaty44 · 12/03/2020 07:44

Is the U.K. not in the Schengen area so not included

allallin · 12/03/2020 07:49

Going into the US you need to have an ESTA visa, that will show your country of residence, so travelling via UK won't bypass the ban on Europeans.

Caspianberg · 12/03/2020 07:53

It seems a silly logic. I mean we have British passports, but are currently living in Mainland Europe. Dh is in the Uk atm, but was here last week around 1hr from Italian boarder.
He would currently pass any checks surely if he flew from Uk on British passport.

Same with 1000s of British people who have been in Europe the last 2 weeks on ski holidays etc

ivykaty44 · 12/03/2020 08:12

Can people please stop trying to apply logic to this news

LIZS · 12/03/2020 08:28

You won’t be able to enter the US if you have been in the restricted area in the past 14 days so not as simple as routing via Heathrow

But how can you police this? If someone flies into UK and stops over for example, they present as if journey starts from UK. And cheaper flights which start UK and stopover in Norway, Canada or Germany?

Daffodil101 · 12/03/2020 08:31

Don’t be daft, they know exactly where you’ve been

LIZS · 12/03/2020 08:52

Not sure they scan individual passports on ferries or Eurotunnel ( although it is a while since we used them) . Assume that is the type of process you mean for tracking, nor do you need a passport to travel from Ireland or Channel Islands. Are they also restricting cruise ships into US?

dazzlingdeborahrose · 12/03/2020 09:13

It's the Schengen countries that are affected by the US travel ban not the entire continent.

MangoFeverDream · 12/03/2020 09:14

Most ridiculous is that it only applies to European citizens not Americans!

You can’t ban American citizens from entering their own country, they’d likely be told to self-quarantine

OchonAgusOchonO · 12/03/2020 10:47

Ireland excluded as well. Maybe as they are both islands

It's Schengen countries the ban applies to so not just EU countries.

Solitaryconfinement · 12/03/2020 11:07

I’m meant to be going to NYC next Wednesday, I was hoping our flights would be cancelled as otherwise we stand to lose money if we simply don’t go. Gutted. DH wants to go as it’s a group trip (so we don’t even have any paperwork, tickets etc)
Just wish to god they’d stop all flights!

notimagain · 12/03/2020 11:19

Just wish to god they’d stop all flights!

.... And many in the travel industry are wishing to god they don’t lose their jobs in the next few weeks. A complete flight ban would be a completely disproportionate response IMHO and would massively increase the number laid off.

I you don’t want to fly to NYC for whatever reason then don’t go - your call.

TeaAndDarkToast · 12/03/2020 23:59

He's coming to get our medical records and then flog us TrumpCare which we will obviously now need since this Biblical plague is upon us..Coincidence? Conspiracy theory?

BritWifeinUSA · 13/03/2020 02:58

@Frazzled2207 why is it “most ridiculous” that people who don’t live here can’t come here but those who were born here or who live here permanently can come home? Would you be in favour of the same being put in place that British people couldn’t return home to the UK after their holiday?

We are going to be fever scanned and health screened upon arrival but this is our home, my husband was born here and has lived here his whole life. Where else is he supposed to go?

Frazzled2207 · 13/03/2020 08:04

BritWife
Sorry of course Americans currently abroad should be allowed to come home. I meant it was ridiculous to say that Americans can now now potentially leave the US, go to Europe, pick up the virus and bring it back to the US-thus suggesting that Europeans are more likely to bring it in than a Europe visiting American which is IMO ridiculous . If he’s serious about the policy he should include the UK in it and give Americans a grace period to come home before flights are stopped completely.
