To think everyone will start hating on anyone with a cough

The government have just said that within two weeks, anyone with a cold or a high temp should self isolate. This is pretty surreal right? Anyone with a cough or a sneeze will be made to feel like a leper!

I always have a dry cough at this time of year. Just after the virus came out i was getting looked at like i was the antichrist whenever i coughed.

Both my Adult DD and my Granddaughter has had high temperatures and coughs, it's just not realistic to self isolate for so long, on symptoms that we get every winter.

halcyondays · 09/03/2020 19:32

They probably already have.

Half the kids at school have coughs and colds at this time of year, so they should be closing schools sooner than later.

vodkaredbullgirl · 09/03/2020 19:37

Ive got a cough and sneezes, no temp and i feel great.

tiredanddangerous · 09/03/2020 19:40

I’ve always got a cough. Maybe I’ll just not leave my house for the next few months Confused

LilyMumsnet · 09/03/2020 19:40

We're just moving this over to the corona topic. Flowers

Branster · 09/03/2020 19:42

I always sneeze when I visit the office of a particular company, no idea why so I’ll have to avoid I guess and give up on a big project.
And, like others, if I get a cough from riding out a cold/flu, the remnants of the cough take weeks and weeks to disappear, just that random cough when you least expect it.

Stressedout10 · 09/03/2020 19:42

@ihaveaquestionplease
I can't do links but it is on the bbc app they have a clip of bj saying it

I’ve had a tickly cough on and off for weeks. And come May I’ll have a cough and streaming eyes from hayfever. Will people be trusted to know themselves and their own bodies and know that they are not actually ill? I can also already predict which of my colleagues will be calling in to tell us they’re self isolating and conveniently won’t have their laptops at home to do anything.

practicallyperfectwithprosecco · 09/03/2020 19:46

My hayfever has started - sneezing and coughing away! Waiting for someone to stick a big cross on me and treat me like a plague carrier!

RainbowsandSnowdrops · 09/03/2020 19:47

I’ve had a terrible cough/ cold lately.

Boss make me feel guilty if I took anytime off, so I dragged myself in and felt horrific and was coughing a lot. Then colleagues complained obviously which made me feel even more shit. You can’t win either way.

I doubt this will happen, as surely half the country will close down.

NoParticularPattern · 09/03/2020 19:47

I’ve had a cold for the last fortnight ish and at the very tail end of them I always get really sneezy when my sense of smell comes back. Happens every year usually at bloody Christmas. This nicely coincided with me actually needing to leave the house for once to do the food shop. You should have seen the faces on some people because I had the audacity to sneeze in public. I can’t even imagine the hysteria I’d have generated if I were in London or a major city instead of a small Yorkshire town.

Iseethesilverlining · 09/03/2020 19:48

Currently on a train, have my usual winter sniffle and cough. Getting glared at for clearing my throat a little. Daren’t actually cough! Interestingly, usually busy train (from London) is almost empty....

inwood · 09/03/2020 19:48

I've been on the tube and suburban London trains since this started, sniff, sneeze or cough, you get space.

FamilyOfAliens · 09/03/2020 19:49

It’s “hating”, not “hating on”.

ihaveaquestionplease · 09/03/2020 19:50

Thanks @Lifeisbeaut I googled but must have been putting the wrong terms in.

Xiaoxiong · 09/03/2020 19:53

I get a runny nose and the sneezes after too much red wine the night before! One morning last week I felt like carrying a little sign saying "it's not corona, it's Shiraz" as everyone on the train carriage edged far, far away...

BecauseReasons · 09/03/2020 19:53

I doubt it. Half the population seems to have a cough at the moment.

Trying to avoid 'hating on' the use of the term 'hating on'

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 09/03/2020 19:54

But I thought if you had a runny nose / sneezes then it wasn’t coronavirus as that’s not one of the symptoms?

I have asthma, and cough whenever I breath cold air, this is going to be fun.

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/03/2020 19:54

Already happening. I went to the theatre last Saturday. Macbeth. Lots of stage smoke. I was too close to the stage and it set off my asthma and I started coughing. Could see people shrinking away on all sides.

PickAChew · 09/03/2020 19:55

Hating on is a specific colloquialisms meaning dishing out abuse.

I always sniffle when it's cold out and I walk into a warm building. I often cough when someone is wearing strong perfume or half the fabric conditioner aisle. Buggered if I'm staying in indefinitely.

SchrodingersKitty · 09/03/2020 19:58

I've had a cough for a week or so - saw gp and she heard slight crackles in lung so on antibiotics. I am asthmatic so always cough whenever I have anything on my chest. This had made my commutes to London unusually pleasant - a strategic cough or two and I get a seat to myself!

PointlessAddict · 09/03/2020 20:09

I’ve had a cough since bloody Christmas. If anyone thinks I will be self isolating for a mucusy cough I’ve had for 3 months with no other potential risk factors for CV they need their head examined and can feel free to pay my wages.

IsAnybodyListening · 09/03/2020 20:18

Absolutely bonkers. The financial infrastructure in the UK would collapse if everyone took that advice. To summarise above posters, how many of us haven't got the sniffles this time of year?
