Just been to tesco and brought loads of loo roll, cans rice and pasta, got home and dh has said im overreacting.

Aibu, this is stuff we already use just a bit more of it.

OP posts:

FelicityFebruary · 04/03/2020 12:47

I was in a metro tesco just now at lunch and it had everything in stock. No sanitizer, but then a week ago most people didn't think about it outside of hospitals.

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 12:59

Just did at shop at Sainsbury’s everything well-stocked, bar hand gel, a contrast to empty to shelf pics.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 04/03/2020 13:10

somehow ended up 750 Tylenol (Paracetamol) gel caps

We bulk buy acetaminophen (paracetamol) whenever we’re in the USA. Glad we were there in October!

I’m not a prepper by any means but it seems sensible to me to have enough food & groceries in to last for a month. That’s only double what I’d normally have. That way, when we have to hole up (and it’s likely we will) we won’t need to rely on the supermarket supply chains, leaving more capacity for those who don’t have the luxury of being able to be prepared.

I think the idea of everyone just being able to order nice things from Ocado when half the population is sick or looking after their sick is pretty delusional.

Astrabees · 05/03/2020 12:25

You can order nice things from Ocado now. I'm just wondering why everyone is stocking up on beans and pasta when they normally eat a more varied diet. I could feed the two of us for over 3 weeks on what I keep in stock to make provision for unexpected guests. Sainsburys had very full shelves this morning, so hopefully all the panic buying will be out of the way now, and the preppers will have full cupboards anyway.

tearsandtiaras · 05/03/2020 12:31

This post smacks of hysteria and look at me, why do you feel the need to post this?

Astrabees · 05/03/2020 13:43

FFS! the shops are full, Sainsburys was full this morning and Waitrose at lunch time, (popped in for a relation) I have no cancellations on my Ocado list this week which includes toilet rolls. Do the panic buyers honestly think that the major supermarkets are doing nothing to keep supplies available. I presume the panic buying is now done - how many toilet rolls does one family need? Hopefully all this is now an irrelevance.

rebecca102 · 05/03/2020 13:53

Omg. One of those idiots.

SecretWitch · 05/03/2020 14:47

@WiseUpJanetWeiss, (love you name btw)...I whizzed through Costco and saw a bottle (huge) with something like 600! On the other hand you cannot get co-comadol over the counter.

Splitsunrise · 05/03/2020 15:23

@Astrabees just to point out that this isn’t true everywhere - my local (very big) Sainsbury’s has completely sold out of loo roll, most tissues, all liquid hand wash apart from two Sainsbury’s own brand (which I think were damaged) and some bars of soap. I asked them when they’re next expecting a delivery and they said in a few hours, but it all gets sold very quickly so doubt there will be any left by the evening. It’s been like this for about a week and a half.

Boots (also big) completely sold out of all hand wash.

Waitrose mostly sold out of loo roll (but were restocking) and had no specifically “antibac” handwash left but some stock of eco friendly branded ones.

Obviously no hand sanitiser in any of these stores.

Just to add the other side of the picture!

Splitsunrise · 05/03/2020 15:24

So I am not a prepper or panic buyer but...we need loo roll and nearly run out of hand wash!

Thisismytimetoshine · 05/03/2020 15:30

Travel a bit further, then. Are you in London? No empty shelves round here. Except hand sanitizer, of course (they’re all on eBay for extortionate amounts), but as it’s almost completely ineffective anyway, I’m not too concerned.

Thisismytimetoshine · 05/03/2020 15:30

Runmybathforme · 05/03/2020 15:36

This gives me the rage. People like you are causing the shortages. Completely unnecessary. Ridiculous.

Lovemusic33 · 05/03/2020 15:40

You can order a online shop if you are self isolating? I don’t see why people are panic buying huge amounts of loo roll, I usually have a couple weeks worth in stock anyway and do a weekly online shop which I can still do if unwell or isolating.

I probably have enough crap in the cupboards to feed us for a fortnight if I really had too.

coconuttelegraph · 05/03/2020 15:49

You can order a online shop if you are self isolating?

You know that the person who drives the lorry to the store, the person who picks the shopping and the person who delivers it to your door might also be self isolating don't you? There is a fundemantal flaw in the home delivery solution.

bellinisurge · 05/03/2020 15:51

What if the delivery drivers have to self isolate or their kids schools do and there aren't enough delivery drivers to go around.
Op, would've been better to do it in affordable dribs and drabs starting weeks ago but it wasn't on your radar so you couldn't and didn't.
Simple solution, your dh can sort himself out for food and bog roll if he has to self isolate at short notice.

bellinisurge · 05/03/2020 15:53

Anyway, the supermarkets have said they can cope. It might take a day or two for their supply requests to be triggered but it's not like it's a no deal Brexit and the supply chains are fucked.

Astrabees · 05/03/2020 16:00

Yes, our local supermarket staff are reassuringly posting on the local Facebook pages that they have contingency plans that they are putting into operation and that there will be not be shortages. I must be very dense that I hadn't twigged the hand sanitisers were being bought up and sold on ebay. In my office we found a huge container under the sink we had forgotten about, so our staff can refill their empty little bottles from it. we were told that in this county there was none available for social care as it had all been diverted to the hospitals. We have wiped everything down withDetol Surface cleaning wipes that actually say on the back of the packet they are effective against coronavirus.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/03/2020 16:09

I guess people can use shower gel as liquid hand soap of struggling to find hand wash or bar soap? Does the same thing surely.

Splitsunrise · 05/03/2020 16:12

@ Thisismytimetoshine I am in London....! Zone 2/3, and I have tried a few shops

SnoozyLou · 05/03/2020 16:13

We've got empty shelves in the shops by us. I can understand buying a extra this or that, but one woman bought 10 giant packs. It's bloody selfish. I hope she gets the shits.

Thisismytimetoshine · 05/03/2020 16:13

Oh, right. Strange, that’s not my experience at all?

SnoozyLou · 05/03/2020 16:14

Giant packs of loo rolls, that is. There is literally nothing left!

Thisismytimetoshine · 05/03/2020 16:15

How odd that people go charging off to buy loo rolls. If they’re really expecting severe food shortages they’ll hardly need much...

Splitsunrise · 05/03/2020 16:16

Odd, maybe the stores near me serve more people? Or they’ve been pretty crappy with stock generally over the last few months so perhaps their managers aren’t very good at managing demand!
