Conflict in the Middle East

So are all aid agencies now wrong about Gaza too?

I started a thread about MSF and it’s reporting on Gaza: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/conflict-in-the-middle-east/5387598-so-are-msf-wrong-about-gaza-too?page=1

Now today it’s all aid agencies working there including MSF that are reporting an official famine - all 3 criteria are being met for a famine.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/aug/24/gaza-famine-declaration-israel-humanitarian-duty-analysis

The tone of all reporting from agencies coming out continues to be utterly damning.

So when does it end? With the deaths of all Palestinians?

“Israel’s response has not been humanitarian. Its spokespeople and proxies have laboured to minimise the deaths, claiming those dying were dying anyway of other causes.
Blocking foreign media from accessing Gaza to report independently, Israel has instead ferried in sympathetic social media “influencers” to Gaza to amplify its denials: that it is Hamas’s fault or the fault of the UN, whose main aid agency for Palestinians, Unrwa, Israel has banned from operating in Israel.
As aid agencies complained in a joint letter earlier this month – accusing Israel of “weaponising” aid – new Israeli registration rules have hampered their ability to operate”

Aid groups say Israel’s new registration rules are ‘weaponising aid’

Lifesaving goods for starved people in Gaza blocked by vague rules on anti-Israeli activity, say humanitarian bodies

What's happening in Gaza is inexcusable.
Anyone thinking Isreal is in the right here is delusional at best.
I fail to understand how anyone can defend Israel.

Yet people still vote that I am unreasonable!! And our government continues to do fuck all about it.

I don't live in the UK, but seeing the footage of arrests at protests and the furor over Sally Rooney, I really don't understand the UKs position on this.

OneKookyShark · 24/08/2025 11:18

There’s been more action on palestine action than there has on Gaza.

I find it quite perplexing, even worrying, how many decent (not perfect) sources people are willing to disregard on here. Sometimes I want to keep a list of all the ones that have been deemed totally wrong/too biased to use etc.

And I don’t mind people using SM to access news and info but when they then seem to favour that over info from NGOs, genuine experts, medics who have visited Gaza etc. it really disturbs me. Some people seem to move further and further away from fact and reality. Or only listen to the sources that repeat their own preconceived ideas.

While insisting they have far more reliable sources which turn out to be practically Israel-run @PinkBobby

Apparently we have done enough meddling in the lives of countries and we should back off and stop trying to fix things and sticking our noses in where they dont belong

I don’t know a single person in real life who doesn’t see this as genocide. In December 2023 one of my partner’s older relatives was very pro Israel as he visited a lot for business in his youth and insisted it must be self defense but he no longer says that. It would be interesting to get a breakdown of the demographics of where people are voting from.

I went to the local pub tonight and in the toilets someone had scrawled a message of solidarity for Palestine and there were about 30 other scrawls all agreeing and saying the same - not a single post denying it was genocide. This is in the South West of England. Maybe it’s the circles I mix in or the area but back in my childhood home city it is the same.

Who are we talking about here?

And are you saying the guardian using information from orgs like MSF on the ground isn’t reliable?

And that we should listen to the social media influencers that Israel is using? Because I have seen the propaganda sources drivel that the likes of Aviva Klompas post on social media.

I’m saying that I find it troubling that the humanitarian branch of the U.N., MSF, BBC, Save the Children and many more are seen as merely spouting Hamas propaganda.

That extremely brave doctors who return from Gaza and speak about what they have seen are now viewed with suspicion/as terrorists or Hamas supporters.

That X feeds that are drowning in Islamophobia are now noteworthy and people are happy to share them as factual or valid sources.

That the IPC states there is a famine in Sudan (fact) and when it does the same in Gaza it’s immediately disregarded as lies. And that people are browsing through photos of victims in a brutal war and saying they’re too fat to be starving.

To be fair, I have seen some rude, unfair comments and dodgy sources from the ‘pro-Palestinian’ side too and there are definitely ‘pro-Israel’ people who I’ve had some very interesting, positive discussions (even if we ultimately disagree). Neither side is perfect but I have a real issue with people disregarding so many sources or rebutting informing with SM posts.

Same. Our Jewish family friends were very pro-Israel about 2 years ago, but are now saying it’s a genocide and are distraught that this is happening.

If someone didn’t agree that it was genocide, would they feel comfortable saying so? I personally don’t agree that it is and would sometimes avoid saying so irl because it’s an invitation to be shouted at/abused. You might also just be mixing with people who are politically similar to you.

Honestly this is a man who does not hold back from an argument and always believes himself to be right. He had a important corporate job and oversaw a large team so tends to speak to everyone like they are an incompetent employee. We both debated it in 2023 - no shouting or name calling as neither of us ever does that. He now goes quiet when it’s discussed and looks upset - I know him well enough to know that he is conflicted by the place he always loved and the dying children on the news every night. A lot of people who started off supporting Israel have changed their minds because there is now blockade on food, 20k children dead and regular stories about accidentally bombing hospitals and journalists. It is hard to defend that even if you are the most important person in the room.

For the record I don’t engage in big conversations about politics unless I know someone well as I am naturally conflict averse and don’t want to be shouted at! It goes both ways! I have seen videos of pro Israel and pro Palestine people being abusive and assaulting people - you get violent extremists in every political spectrum.
