Why? Why has Israel underhandedly been arming these gangs that are known to steal humanitarian aid? It has just been disclosed today but how long has it been going on for

I posted previously how Palestinians have been complaining that armed gangs are stealing aid whilst the IDF are nearby and have done nothing but this has just been dismissed as Hamas propaganda. It turns out it isn't after all like so many other incidences.

From the same article:

The Abu Shabab group went public in early May, declaring itself a “nationalist force.” It said it was protecting aid, including around the food distribution hubs run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a mainly American private contractor that Israel intends to replace the U.N.-led aid network. Aid workers and Palestinians who know the group estimate it has several hundred fighters.

The Abu Shabab group’s media office told The Associated Press it was collaborating with GHF “to ensure that the food and medicine reaches its beneficiaries.” It said it was not involved in distribution, but that its fighters secured the surroundings of distribution centers run by GHF inside military-controlled zones in the Rafah area.

A spokesperson with GHF said it had “no collaboration” with Abu Shabab.
“We do have local Palestinian workers we are very proud of, but none is armed, and they do not belong to Abu Shabab’s organization,” the spokesperson said, speaking on condition of anonymity in accordance with the group’s rules.

What does all this have to do with aid?

Muhammad Shehada, a political analyst from Gaza who is a visiting fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said he doesn’t believe Israel’s support for armed groups is aimed at directly fighting Hamas. So far there has been no attempt to deploy the groups against the militants.

Instead, he said, Israel is using the gangs and the looting to present GHF “as the only alternative to provide food to Palestinians,” since its supplies get in while the U.N.’s don’t.

Israel wants the GHF to replace the U.N.-led aid system because it claims Hamas has been siphoning off large amounts of supplies. The U.N. denies that significant amounts have been taken by Hamas. Israel has also said it aims to move all Palestinians in Gaza to a “sterile zone” in the south, around the food hubs, while it fights Hamas elsewhere.

The reason Israel wants to get rid of UNWRA is because it serves the Palestinians and also exists to maintain their refugee status.

When modern day Israel unilaterally declared its creation in 1948, the Palestinians (now including their descendants) who were ethnically cleansed became refugees and via International Law and UN resolutions have the right to return. The dismantling of UNWRA is an open attempt to extinguish this right.

On Abu Shabab, on May 30th 2025 his family disowned him due to collaboration, saying:

“Statement from the Abu Shabab Family in Gaza Regarding Our Son Yasser Abu Shabab and His Security Group Operating in Rafah

To the Palestinian people,

We, the elders and dignitaries of the Abu Shabab family, issue this important and clear national statement in light of the difficult circumstances our people are facing under aggression and genocide. This is a defining moment that requires clarity from everyone. We affirm our family’s firm and historical stance in support of our people’s just cause:
1.Initially, we supported our son Yasser Abu Shabab morally, based on his claims that he was helping secure humanitarian aid during the war and that his work was not connected to any organizational or security framework.
2.Over time, however, we received credible information from individuals close to him, indicating his involvement in suspicious security activities that could not be ignored.
3.We, the elders of the Abu Shabab family, held an extended meeting and unanimously decided to reject any actions that would tarnish our family’s honorable national reputation.
4.The next day, we summoned Yasser and confronted him responsibly. He presented some footage in an attempt to clear his name, claiming his role was purely humanitarian. However, he did not provide proof of any other activities.
5.We, like the rest of the public, were shocked when the resistance broadcast footage showing Yasser’s group engaged in dangerous security work, even participating as undercover agents (mista’arvim) supporting the Israeli occupation forces.
6.Therefore, we declare before God, our people, and our brave resistance:

•We completely disown Yasser Abu Shabab. He has strayed from our family’s national and moral path. Neither he nor those who work with him represent our honorable family, which has long sacrificed for Palestine.
•We will pursue and hold him accountable by all means necessary and will not allow him to stain our family’s reputation. He misled us for too long.
•We call on anyone involved in his group to immediately disown him publicly. Anyone who does not will face severe consequences. We openly declare: his blood is forfeit.

7.Yasser will not be accepted back into the family unless he publicly repents before the Palestinian people and surrenders to the family elders to face traditional accountability measures that will restore our family’s dignity and erase this shame.
8.We ask the Palestinian public to understand the difficult position we have been placed in without our will and to recognize that Yasser’s actions do not represent the Abu Shabab family, which has always stood at the heart of the national resistance.

May God have mercy on the martyrs and protect our people from division and conspiracy.”

According to this source, the armed gangs are putting pressure on Hamas that are making them keen to enter a new round of talks.

Hamas ready for 'serious' Gaza ceasefire talks

Hamas is ready to enter a new round of talks to reach a Gaza ceasefire but will not drop its long-standing demands for an Israeli withdrawal and an end to the war in the Palestinian enclave, the group's chief negotiator and sources have said.

Sources told The National on Friday that Hamas has in the past week been engaged in intense contacts with mediators from Egypt, Qatar and the US. The group has shown flexibility on some issues but has not budged on its core conditions for a truce, they added.

Hamas, they said, now wants guarantees from all three mediators that negotiations with Israel – proposed to begin as soon as a temporary truce comes into effect – will lead to an Israeli withdrawal and an end to the 20-month war.

Alarmed by the increasing criminal activity of Israeli-backed armed groups in Gaza, Hamas also wants the long-proposed Palestinian administration of independent technocrats to take over the running of the war-ravaged enclave as soon as a truce begins, the sources said.

They said the groups, drawn from powerful families and clans known to oppose Hamas, have attacked Hamas members and their families, and have stolen humanitarian aid.

They have a media office..of course they do. God bless the internet.

On Thursday, Israel’s prime minister confirmed what we had known for months: the Israeli government has been arming, financing, and providing protection to alleged ISIS-linked and criminal militias in southern Gaza.

The Israeli government claims it did this because "any harm to the Hamas regime serves us," but a gang of 300 fighters, including untrained drug dealers, thieves, murderers, and radicals, cannot overpower Hamas’ 30,000 militants. Realities on the ground indicate a far more nefarious scheme: those gangs have become a proxy used to advance Israel’s genocide, ethnic cleansing, and starvation policies.

They are the very same gangs responsible for looting aid, assaulting humanitarian workers, reportedly collaborating with the US-Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GFH), and, most alarmingly, establishing an encampment in eastern Rafah – the very area the Israeli military is working to push all Palestinians in Gaza into – and using looted food as bait to lure people.

I think a trained drug dealer is called a pharmacist. Not to be confused with a chemist, as so often happens.

Sounds like Netanyahu does not change his tune. First it was backing Hamas to prevent political unanimity in Palestinian political arena, and now it is ISIS backed militia. Your enemy’s enemy is your friend. What could possibly go wrong…

Perhaps, but there's millions of dollars up for grab through the GHF food scheme. Plenty to give these gangs and also siphon of a little bit. Remember Netanyahu is currently on trial for receiving illegal funds.

Middle East Eye recycles a C4 news item about Abu Shabab, which confirms what is now well known and even admitted to by Netanyahu. So UN or a notorious ISIS fellow traveller mafia to distribute humanitarian aid - you really couldn't make this stuff up.

Edited

The militarisation of aid is disgusting and has caused so much more trauma and death. The UN have stated that they were losing close to 1% of their aid to theft which is lower than most other conflict zones. They are still waiting on the evidence from the IDF for their claim of widespread looting.

It’s no longer just asking or shouting - it’s screaming: this terrible war must end, and end NOW. And that call is coming from people firmly inside the tent, who utterly and unequivocally support and defend Israel, even at the risk of their own lives. It’s no longer 'but Hamas' it’s 'ceasefire now, and bring the hostages home.'

Netanyahu and his closest allies are clinging to power, no matter the cost — to Israelis or Palestinians. I'm still waiting, in vain, for Stephen Pollard, Jake Wallis Simpson, or Colonel Richard Kemp and others to get on board the peace train.

Captain Roy, one of the signatories of the letter: "I went into the reserves because I felt that the country was in crisis and I really needed to protect the home and assist in the war effort, to protect those close to me. Over time, as the war progressed, I lost the feeling that this is what we are doing. I feel that the war is not achieving its goals and is mainly endangering the hostages. I saw how throughout my service there are attacks that harm the hostages, the presence and the permissive fire policy in Gaza, which causes the injury and killing of hostages. The starvation and siege of Gaza that lead to the hostages also having shortages, hunger and substandard conditions."

The latest statement calls on every Israeli “to do everything in their power” to oppose the war and says “some of us will refuse [to serve] publicly” while many others will refuse “in other, non-public ways”.

One intelligence officer who has recently refused to serve said they could no longer participate in a war in which the military “didn’t think twice” about harming civilians when bombing targets in Gaza.

In an interview, they said: “I felt that it was immoral and insanely excessive. I felt that they stopped thinking and feeling, and they were willing to do everything to achieve a goal that wasn’t really a real goal … and if there is a goal, it’s to try to get rid of Gaza’s population by any means.”

Hamas can end the war NOW!

They want that ceasefire, and that’s apparently what’s being negotiated in Qatar realpolitik demands compromise, and that’s reportedly what Trump wants too, the only person Netanyahu truly fears. My comment was channeling those Israeli military and intelligence officers who are calling for exactly that.

In a tense 40-minute phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, US President Donald Trump told the premier he must permanently end the war in the Gaza Strip, Israeli television reported Tuesday.

Trump reportedly told Netanyahu that the so-called “Witkoff framework,” which would pause the war for some 60 days in exchange for about half of the hostages held by Hamas, will not suffice.

Netanyahu has so far refused to negotiate a Gaza truce-hostage deal that would permanently end the fighting in the Strip — a red line for him and his far-right coalition partners.

Yes, both parties need to make that ceasefire happen and then flipping keep it!
Including Hezbolah and the Houthis in this too.

Netanyahu doesn't want to end the war as he knows the courts are waiting for him
