Conflict in the Middle East

UK government - sanctions against Israeli cabinet members

I think this is as far as the government should ever go if it does try and send some kind of signal to Israel. The idea of sanctions hurting every Israeli , including the families of the October 7th victims, would be simply wrong. To damage the economy of Israel at this time of war would be morally wrong and simply lead to other countries improving trade links.

Our government should not be beholden to a pro Palestinian mob and make long lasting commitments that would reward Hamas for one of the most terrible if not the most terrible terrorist event in history.

Ok then you should understand how you get the following -

“So how do you achieve a statistically meaningful sample of 9000000 people- remind me please.”

Why did you ask then?

Because I'm a scientist who doesn't sample people, your posts implied you knew more about it and I thought I could learn more from you. Seems not.

I feel despite any feelings on this conflict we should not punish the Israeli people for any perceived (note the word perceived) excessive force in Gaza. We cannot not arm Israel and leave it defenceless either, that idea is simply crazy.

I don't whether sanctions on 2 individuals may be appropriate but I think we could stop there and move on from some sort of punishment of Israel for responding to mass terrorism .

also I am really concerned that there are sectarian forces driving a desire for a UK repose. which is certainly unwelcome in a pluralist society where I would say the silent majority are in support of no or very limited action against Israel.

Perceived excessive force in GAZA?

Let the journalists in.
It is a genocide!

I thought you were questioning the feasibility of it. So we do both agree that it can be done? If not- read the link.

I know a sufficient amount to understand the basics and to see how it can applied to both scientific, social and political fields.

I would say that basic knowledge of it is infact necessary to meaningfully engage in a debate about a poll. As this thread shows.

If you read the link and have questions about the basic principles - I can try and help

Edited

Polls are often carried out, whether they are carried out well is another matter. There is always a margin for error, but you've presumably read the link you posted.

I can think of a couple of events that defied predictions of polling results. People are capricious.

Israel ? leave it defenceless ?
Do me a favour. Check out the armaments it has at its disposal and compare that to those owned by Hezbollah or Hamas or Iran.

"Israel defenceless" is almost as ridiculous a statement as describing this current assault on Gaza as "Israel defending itself."

But I guess they both make great soundbites.

HellsBalls · 06/06/2025 18:34

Israel is very well armed exactly because of Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran.

Badh · 06/06/2025 19:23

Yes. The strongest military in the Middle East. It hardly needs arms sales from the UK that posters were keen to tell us were such a small % that they weren’t worth cancelling.

Yes I did

The researcher is a professor from Penn State university
An Israeli polling company with expertise in polling was commissioned to conduct the poll.

It was an online poll which probably influenced how people expressed their thoughts. People probably say things anonymously that they would not face to face (shouldn’t surprise us).

The question about demographics were gender, age, region where they live, extent of religious beliefs (all were Israeli Jews). Highest level of education, household income, where people were born if not Israel, year of emigration to Israel.

This would have allowed them to see if the sample was representative of the wider population.

The questions appear to allow a selection of responses eg

In your opinion, how should the IDF act toward the civilian population during the conquest of a city in war? (One answer, order of responses varies)

  • Try to avoid harming civilians as much as possible
  • Allow limited harm if necessary for security
  • Use a strong hand against the entire population to prevent future threats
  • No moral or legal restrictions on army actions in wartime
  • None of the above

Only the headline results seem available in newspaper articles- I can’t see the results having been used in a study. Not sure what extent of peer review there is for stats in a social/ political journal or a book - if this where results will be published in.

I used the internet to translate methodology.

It’s well armed because of the USA.

I just read this https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jun/06/netanyahu-defends-arming-palestinian-clans-accused-of-ties-with-jihadist-groups
I think Netanyahu and his government need to go ASAP. I think they are acting very much against the intetest of Israel and Israelis.
These groups he is arming (and saying what is wrong with that?!!!) have ties to Islamic Estate . I mean.... I cannot fanthom our Secret Services and armies being that happy about this.
And what do Israelis think of this?
It is unlikely that Hamas would have expanded and taken over without the initial support from Israel itself...... Peace could have been reached so many times in the past without this meddling, double back stabbing techniques.
A new government with real leadership and a hunger for Peace is what is needed.
But what do Israelis think of Netanyahu's and IDF giving weapons to gangs in Gaza?

Netanyahu defends arming Palestinian clans accused of ties with jihadist groups

PM says it ‘saves lives of Israeli soldiers’, after accusations government is giving weapons to ‘criminals and felons’

I have seen it this morning too.
I think more names need to be added to the list.

MummytoE · 11/06/2025 17:16

Hopefully many more sanctions to come

Thanks for this. It seems that it’s now finally becoming an open secret that the Israeli government has no intention of de-escalating and its priority were never the Israeli and Palestinian people nor the hostages. Netanyahu will continue to prolong Israel’s genocidal actions and then find scapegoats to suit his agenda. He never wanted a two-state solution.

mids2019 · 15/06/2025 04:00

Errr sorry but Israel is at war in a terrifying war against Iran. Instead of adding to the list we need to be assisting Israel defend herself.

This is brilliant news. And yes the whole is Israel must be sanctioned. We must leave the victims of October 7 t if this but the rest of the country should be sanctioned.

Israel has long been building up to start this war after Trump tore apart Obama’s agreement. So they are welcome to it. There are numerous instances of Netenyahu crying wolf on nukes from Iran, and may the gods burn his soul, about WMDs in Iraq when Saddam was there.
