This is a brilliant article.

This will be taught in schools one day and our grandkids will ask us but what did you do when you knew this was happening?

What did you do during the genocide in Gaza? | Arwa Mahdawi

When future generations read about Gaza with horror and wonder how we allowed a livestreamed genocide to happen, what will you say?

What did you do in the war mummy?

Oh I posted on mn said the first few replies. I made sure that randoms on the internet knew I was on ‘the right side of history’. I threatened to out irl anyone who disagreed with me. I used the approved terminology for my arguments that are repeated over and over in order to stifle any disagreement or debate. Thinly veiled threats towards a group of people who have been systematically discriminated against for centuries littered my online posts, making sure they are aware they have existence on other people’s terms and are not afforded full humanity unless they comply.

How very mid 2020s of you said the children.

okydokethen · 23/05/2025 07:05

I’ve listened and watched the news when at times it was easier not to because it’s so distressing

I donate monthly to a charity offering aid

Ive signed petitions

ultimately I imagine, and hope, this period of time will be reflected on with shame and shock

10UsernamesNotAvailableTryAnotherOne · 23/05/2025 07:07

I have posted on Mumsnet in support of Palestine. I regularly go to protests, boycott, I am archiving videos and news articles on the war crimes commited against the Palestinians and I donate to charities that help them. I wish I could more.

Oooo savage. But I totally agree.

theclampits · 23/05/2025 07:10

Honestly I haven’t done much. It doesn’t mean I don’t agree what Isreal are doing to the innocent people in Palestine is right. It’s disgusting and I think they’ve had their ‘payback’ for what happened on October 7th. Which i also think was disgusting.

To be fair, the virtue signallers won't have done much either, other than make themselves feel better/superior. Not 'doing' things like protests or waving flags does not mean you or I don't care.

I didn’t fall for Hamas propaganda or spread blood libels.

Same.

leftorrightnow · 23/05/2025 07:21

The situation In Gaza is beyond horrific.
if you’re able to join marches/write articles/ donate money/lobby your MP/exert influence through your job - do it!!

but don’t do this blaming/virtue signaling bs.

at any point in history, thousands of injustices and sufferings take place. What did you do during the current famine in Sudan? The attacks on the Rohingya in Myanmar? Ukraine war? DRC civil war? what did you do to help all the children and families suffering under the cuts to aocial
services in this country? The people drowning in the Mediterranean as they try to get to Europe?

it never ends.

do what you can where you are and with what you have. Sometimes you’re better placed to focus on one international crisis than another. Or help out in your own community. And sometimes, you’re driving in your own personal battles and don’t have energy for helping others.

Personally, I know many people mobilizing for Gaza who’ve usually done a lot of humanitarian work and protesting and politics.

I also know people who didn’t do shit in all these other situations but somehow feel themselves called to jump on the Palestinian bandwagon. Maybe because they have cooler protests? I don’t know.

But this horrible situation shouldn’t be turned into a competition in suffering or in virtue signaling.

I’ve always wondered what would happen if the real names of those defending Israel were revealed. Would they still stand by what they’ve said knowing it was public knowledge?

I spoke out against Hamas at work and was called a racist.

They are a terrorist organisation. I would hope that HR would take a dim view of that.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 23/05/2025 07:39

I’ve started wearing a Magen David, hoping to challenge the perception that the average Jew is a colonialist aggressor and therefore a legitimate target for violence.

I’ve attended and helped organise joint Jewish-Palestinian events in London.

I’ve tried to find reliable/neutral sources of information about the conflict, and shared them when appropriate.

chachahide · 23/05/2025 07:41

PaulKnickerless · 23/05/2025 01:15

All civilians, Palestinian and Israeli, should be able to live their lives in peace and safety.

The Israeli government are committing crimes against humanity. Starving of innocent civilians is absolutely terrible and should be stopped immediately. Hamas should not get away with their actions either - they are a terrorist organisation. The taking of hostages and brutal killings, use of civilians as human shields, are their doing.

Exactly this.

Hamas need to fucking stop. But watching babies die needlessly and severely malnourished toddlers (footage from the UN, Save the children not hamas propganda), is fucking heart breaking. It’s not their fault

Even if war is justified you’ve got to stick to the Geneva convention. Just because one side didn’t doesn’t mean you follow the rules of engagement of a terrorist organisation if you’re a State military.

That’s great.

I have corrected people when I have come across antisemitism or Islamophobia. Some people are ignorant of the historic roots of this conflict, so I talk about it with them when the opportunity arises.

In general I have been surprised by the strength of feeling around this conflict vs others that have been equal in their brutality.

You mean you gave your opinion in a situation where it wasn't appropriate.

From what I know of the alleged refugee camps, is that they are fully developed areas that just kept the name of refugee camp from 50 years ago. No tented refugee camps have been bombed. That would be mass murder, and it has not happened.

The IDF have been clearly notifying everyone in the area by leafleting and dropping dud bombs onto the buildings before some time later dropping the real bombs.
This is why there is so much phone footage of the destruction of the buildings. Everyone knows where and when.
When Hamas are caught in the open, the IDF are using much smaller munitions and have to act fast. That’s not to say there have not been innocent casualties, but it’s not the egregious mass murder and genocide being parroted in social media.

More than 90% of houses have been bombed so the vast majority of people in Gaza are living in tents or makeshift shelters.

So yes tented areas have been bombed. And yes, it is mass murder.

You sound a bit behind to be honest. The Israeli government have moved on and dropped these lines you are using and are more explicit about their aims.

Protest, write letters, lobby my MP, give support to others protesting, give donations to Medical Aid For Palestinians.

Same here.

Posting on mn is tongue in cheek. It definitely doesn’t make any difference.

Are you saying that you think there are posters on here who are threatening Jewish people?

fixingmylife · 23/05/2025 08:09

I have spoken out, I have signed petitions, I have posted online on social media and mumsnet, I have written to my MP and donated.

BreezyBertha · 23/05/2025 00:23

Same. Simple use of intellect, logic and sense that seems to be lacking in this particular conflict. No surprise why.

I also did a lot of research and thought it was a great tragedy and a stain on humanity that the world’s leaders and the UN stood by for decades and did nothing while Palestinians were indoctrinated into wanting to kill Jewish people and abused as pawns in a religious war, kept as perpetual refugees and a multi billion $ industry was created from their suffering.

I also researched Benjamin Netanyahu quite extensively and decided he is a great and genuine leader unlike the pathetic puppets we have in much of the Western world (Trump excluded).

<dodges flamethrowers>

Why do you think Netanyahu is a great leader - he’s guilty of war crimes. An Israeli life isn’t worth more than a Palestinian and vice versa

SomethingFun · 23/05/2025 08:14

I thought it was a genocide? It doesn’t seem appropriate to be tongue in cheek.

You tell me why every thread about this war has someone either use holocaust terminology or bring up nazi germany if it isn’t meant to remind Jewish people what terrible things can happen to them?

quantumbutterfly · 23/05/2025 08:24

Koalafan · 23/05/2025 06:09

Dresden has been described more recently as a genocide by some folk, especially as it was a direct attack on civilians, some of which had fled from the chaos in the eastern parts of Germany. It was 'justified' at the time by hatred propaganda toward every and any German.

Rewriting history. The Reich were already committing genocide on their own and other country's Jews, the blitz was another day at the office for them. Many cities in England were flattened, my f-i-l went to university in the 50's, the streets of his university town were still rubble and craters.

Please don't compare the current situation to the Holocaust.

Well, there has been verified footage of burnt out tents in these areas complete with body parts of children and plenty of others too.

Alleged? where on earth do you think these people go when they are told to move from area X to area Y? book into a Premier Inn?

Every area in Gaza has been bombed and flattened, the devastation is complete and now the IDF is re bombing the wrecked areas again and again.

The figure of 52000 deaths is again verified and reasonably accurate.

Of course the IDF could allow in independent journalists but refuse, why?

TheWiseGoose · 23/05/2025 08:28

I pray they will return the hostages safely so all the madness will stop. And I pray Palestinians will stop celebrating when terrorism happens on western soil.
