This is a brilliant article.

This will be taught in schools one day and our grandkids will ask us but what did you do when you knew this was happening?

What did you do during the genocide in Gaza? | Arwa Mahdawi

When future generations read about Gaza with horror and wonder how we allowed a livestreamed genocide to happen, what will you say?

Oh dear lord. This old chestnut again.

Gaza population: 2.1 million

Reported deaths: 53,000 approximately (but be very weary of this figure given that Hamas are proven liars and many of the reported deaths are militants).

Thats 2.5% of the population after over 19 months of war.

70% of Gaza’s buildings are destroyed, yet 97.5% of the people are still alive…

If this were truly a genocide, those numbers would look very different.

Israel has one of the most advanced militaries on earth. Hundreds of fighter jets. Real-time drone surveillance. Precision-guided munitions. They’ve carried out over 30,000 strikes across Gaza - and yet, 97.5% of its population remains.

If Israel's goal was to wipe Gaza off the map, it could've been done in days. What we’re seeing looks more like restraint to me.

@MNHQ why do you allow your platform to be turned into a hub to troll Jews in this way? Aren’t Jewish people in as much danger as it is, as the tragic events of Wednesday night in Washington has shown?

I learned that the UK is a good place to live in this time of the world

I learnt that anti semitism is as pernicious as it was at any time historically

I have learnt to not to take everything in the media at face value

I have learnt to fear that the outcome of this conflict in a remote region will cause long lasting harm to the culture of our society with Jews being fair game as an outlet for people's frustration at a foreign war

Again. Do you pick apart other racist comments and tell people they’re wrong to be affected? Why are you denying my feelings? My offense? Who are you to tell me what I can and can’t be insulted by?

Who are you to tell Lord Levy (and Jewish friends of ours appalled by what the government of Israel is doing) that you are right and they are wrong?

Jujujudo · 24/05/2025 13:08

Eatcakeplease · 24/05/2025 13:07

Well someone hasn't done their research have they. Israel have taken control of the Rafah crossing into Egypt.

Well someone has done their research. And this someone is telling you that Egypt demanded that Israel control the border because they don’t want to open it. I read Hebrew and Arabic - I have close friends in Gaza and in Israel. Do you?

Seriously why can't they just not stop with the endless comparisons to the holocaust.

As I've said a million times on here, it's nothing like the holocaust...are people really this thick? Shocking

hangingonfordearlife1 · 24/05/2025 12:52

what is the actual difference in the way people are murdered? wether it’s gas chamber or being purposely starved to death and bombed to oblivion?

Oh fgs.
The difference is in the numbers amongst other things. 55k to 6m. Unless you believe a Jewish life is worth only a fraction of a Palestinian life?
The difference is also in who is the main target. The main target of the Nazis was any Jew, purely because they were Jewish. The main target of the IDF is Hamas, who started this war by invading Israel. What did the Jews do to deserve the Holocaust? Nothing. What did Hamas do to deserve this war? Was it also nothing?

I cannot believe this has to be said over and over and over here.

i couldn’t really give a damn about your misplaced offence when babies are dying for no good reason.

even IF hamas are guilty of all that it doesn’t negate the fact that palestinian people who are not all hamas are being collectively punished (war crime) murdered daily. babies and children are starving in their mothers arms while aid is being blocked. this is pure evil.

Even if???? They filmed themselves committing unspeakable atrocities! They kidnapped over 200 people and murdered a mother and her 2 babies in cold blood!!!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 24/05/2025 13:13

I abhor antisemitism, I have been horrified by the dramatic rise in antisemitic attacks, and I totally understand why people find comparisons to the holocaust highly offensive. The 7th October attacks were utterly horrific, and the ongoing plight of the hostages and their families is dreadful.

I can feel all of the above while simultaneously recognising the terrible genocide in Gaza that is happening right now, which is being perpetrated by the Israeli government. We must stand up against these horrors, otherwise we become complicit. I believe that we can do so without descending into antisemitic rhetoric. We should hold the war criminal Netanyahu to account, and his warmongering colleagues, without seeking to hold Jewish people in general accountable for the actions of a few. And indeed, there are many Jewish people who are themselves speaking out against the genocide in Gaza because they do not want such atrocities to be perpetrated in their names.

mids2019 · 24/05/2025 13:13

We have no reliable figures on fatalities as the numbers are all provided by Hamas and do not include the many thousands of Hamas fighters that have been killed. 868 Israel I soldiers to have died in action in Gaza fighting terrorists but mysteriously we have no figures for Hamas casualties which given the Israeli technical superiority must be in the thousands (tens of thousands) and presumably these figures need to be subtracted from the 50000 figure commonly used by the media.

Weaponsing the word genocide hasn't helped anyone that is why the BBC do not use the word in their reporting.

SigmundinaCafe · 24/05/2025 13:14

Jujujudo · 24/05/2025 12:57

Wow. Thank you for your empathy and understanding!! Wow.

Sorry you’ve had to put up with this abuse @Jujujudo Please know non Jews around the world are horrified with what you’re having to deal with. Scary times, antisemitism corrodes society so we should all be terrified at this point in time.

Have reported that post because that response aimed at you was unacceptable.

Eatcakeplease · 24/05/2025 13:14

How dense are some posters who claim it can't be a genocide not all the Palestinians In Gaza are killed. The number isn't high enough for you? Sickening

Does the Bosnia genocide not count either because the figure of those murdered stands at around 8,000? Far less in numbers and percentage than in Gaza.

This is disgusting, absolutely disgraceful. There is nothing about this horrible war that equates to the Holocaust. This comes under the widely a accepted IHRA definition of antisemitism and you should delete it.

Perhaps we would be better able to verify the figures if Israel permitted international journalists to get into Gaza?

Yes. Because of Hamas. There you go, wasn't that hard was it?
Israel wouldn't even be in Gaza if it wasn't for the Hamas atrocities. Would they still be oppressing Palestinians? Yes. But would those 55k Palestinians still be alive to be oppressed? Yes.

Could you please answer my questions?

Do you condemn the murder by starvation of innocents in Gaza?
Do you believe that the British PM, with his Jewish wife, is an anti-Semite?
Do you believe that other Jewish people are entitled to hold an opinion different to yours about what does and does not constitute antisemitism?

I’m an atheist, I believe all religion is man made stories. Hamas is an evil organisation. I also believe that Netanyahu and his cabinet is an evil organisation.

The remaining hostages who were taken on that dreadful day must be returned. Netanyahu must stop this deliberate policy of starving innocents.

Can’t you see that both situations are equally terrible?
