What does 'Free Palestine' mean to you?

I just read that Rachel Zegler shared the trailer for Snow White and commented attached to it, '....and always remember, free Palestine.'

It just got me thinking, what does 'Free Palestine' or 'A Free Palestine' mean to you?

What is it you would want to see in order to be satisfied that Palestine is free and Palestinians are free?

Nobody? I get that it's perhaps a difficult and complex question to answer, but surely someone must have an understanding of what it means and how it should be achieved?

To me it means a two state solution where Israel and Palestine are merely neighbouring states. Israel will not have control over the water/electricity/movement of people/ taxes/ Internet/ imports etc.

Both countries will accept their borders and not seek to increase their land mass.

Palestine will have full control of it's people and parliament and be recognized by the world as an independent state.

But a special relationship will exist between the two that respects their integrated traditions and history.
Like Ireland and England.

Free Palestine from Hamas

FrippEnos · 22/03/2025 20:33

Its a nonsense term, they will never be free from Israeli oppression and never be free from Hamas or groups like Hamas.
The people of the region are caught i a self perpetuating loop of hatred.

ParsnipPuree · 22/03/2025 20:50

I just roll my eyes when I see it thinking they’re either anti semites or useful idiots who have no understanding of the situation.

A thought terminating cliche like Transwomen Are Women and Just Stop Oil. It doesn't mean anything. Just signals your in-group status.

Comedycook · 22/03/2025 20:54

If I hear someone say free Palestine I take it to mean they wish to see the dismantling and destruction of Israel and a single Palestinian state to exist instead.

Exactly this. Those poor people are trapped in a never ending nightmare

I agree that this is what it means to me. And all the settlers out of the West Bank.

SassySusie · 22/03/2025 21:01

To me it means the end of the Israeli occupation (1967).

CarrieOnComplaining · 22/03/2025 21:02

A Two state division between Palestine and Israel and a democratically elected non terrorist government.

Whatsinanamehey · 22/03/2025 21:06

Free Palestine from Israeli occupation and oppression.

Martymcfly24 · 22/03/2025 21:09

I find people who usually oppose another country having democratic freedoms usually have the advantage of being in the position of the oppressor.

Free Palestine from Hamas

They don't want to be free of Hamas though.

Exactly, in this case free Palestine has a pretty clear meaning:

Palestinians having the right to safety, security, self determination, political and economic and property rights.

That's what "free Palestine" means.

Acting like the phrase is super complicated or (lol) anti Semitic to disguise the fact that you (a general "you") don't think Palestinians deserve those basic and fundamental human rights seems like you in fact support the ongoing oppression of Palestinians, instead.

Switcher · 22/03/2025 21:14

What it should mean is confronting, acknowledging and moving on from the toxic legacy of the ottoman empire. Unfortunately what it does mean is a doom loop of revenge and futility. Vergangenheitsbewältigung, for Arab states to move on, drive out Islamists and seek peace.

DontKnowAnythingAnymore · 22/03/2025 21:26

How can we say what it means? I know what it means to me, but I imagine it means very different things to all the people who say or post it.

I despair of a world that will ever be at peace with nations allowing each other to live happily.

They could have had that 77 years ago. The Arabs (who they referred to themselves as at the time) did not want that, a horrific and catastrophic mistake for generations afterwards IMO.

To me Free Palestine means Israel taking down the border wall with Gaza, doing away with checkpoints in the West Bank, giving autonomy over their airspace and coast and Palestinians being free to kill all the Jews as horrifically as they did on Oct 7th, as they try to take control of Israel.

I’m sure the surrounding Arab states would be chomping at the bit to join in and help!

Oct 7th showed us what Palestinians are capable of when they can invade Israel.

It would be disingenuous to think otherwise.

soupyspoon · 22/03/2025 21:30

I certainly dont say that now, I might have done a few years ago. Its a trite, simplistic and ultimately meaningless concept

This.

AlteredStater · 22/03/2025 21:34

Doesn't mean much at all, but they do need to be free from Hamas as a pp said. A two state solution won't work, all the surrounding Arab nations want Israel gone. Trouble is going to keep on happening.
