Conflict in the Middle East

Has anyone watched No Other Land by Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham & Palestinian activist Basel Adra?

Just that, really. I’ve been meaning to watch No Other Land after a friend highly recommended it. She said Basel Adra, the Palestinian journalist, one of the co-directors, shares eye-opening insights and footage on X (formerly Twitter) about the experiences of those living in the West Bank.

I’ve been told that it documents the forced displacement of Palestinian communities in the West Bank, apparently with both directors offering a unique perspective from opposite sides of the conflict.

For those who have seen it – what did you think?

Haven’t watched it. I read not long after the Oscar nomination idf was raiding the village of the Palestinian activist

Was this recently? I was really saddened to see that things haven’t changed much after the recent ceasefire when I came across Basel’s X account.

Thanks for sharing. It’s absolutely horrifying that the IDF can be so cruel and there doesn’t even seem to be any justification for it and there usually is. I don’t understand the need to exert their authority in such a way.

Fantastic news. Well deserved 👏

I read recently that the filmmakers had trouble finding a US distributor? It’s truly sad when I read about the settler violence that seems to be prevalent in the West Bank. I’m not sure what the Palestinians are meant to do here and how they are expected to defend themselves.

Yes they’re refusing to distribute it

from bbc their speech when they came to the stage

Abraham said: "There is a different path, a political solution, without ethnic supremacy, with national rights for both of our people.
"And I have to say, as I am here, the foreign policy in this country is helping to block this path." The audience cheered.
Adra thanked the Academy and said he became a father two months ago.
"I hope to my daughter that she will not have to live the same life I am living now, always fearing settlers' violence, home demolitions and forceful displacements."

Sorry @EasterIssland , I missed seeing you had already said this.

The Oscar’s’ acceptance speech for this as winner of best documentary, a word or two from each - the Palestinian and the Israeli maker- was just on Channel 4 News. The Israeli ended with there must be another way. ( My recollection of what he said.)

Not directly about the film, but this is an amazing interview (in Arabic - part of a series of videos with Arabic-speaking Israeli Jews) with the film's Jewish co-director Yuval Avraham. There are English subtitles. Highly worth watching.

Thank you very much. Please would you tell me how to find the subtitles?

Scrolling I'm on mobile so it may be different on browser, but click the "cc" button and the subtitles should come up. Or click the little cog and toggle subtitles "cc" to on by selecting language.

Thank you @israelilefty for posting that video. I have just watched it and thought how moving it was and how revealing it was of what might have been between Palestinians and Jews when he explained that his beloved grandfather spoke Arabic very well in a Palestinian dialect saying,

^“He grew up in Jerusalem in the thirties. He had a very dear Palestinian friend.
I mean in Jerusalem before the Nakba, it was a very different space in those days, and he learnt Arabic.”

bigboykitty · 04/03/2025 11:10

It's already available to watch or download on the Channel 4 app. I've downloaded it but haven't watched yet. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets pulled from tonight's schedule, given the Israeli state's hold over the current government

Lisaloobylou · 04/03/2025 12:53

I watched No other land yesterday, it was an excellent production, quite a hard watch, both Yuval and Basel are trying to document the struggles and give you just a snippet of what is happening to the poor families in the West Bank, it was heart breaking, but as Basel says in the film this is a conflict that has been going since 1947, there just has to be another way!!!

That’s the thing. They were coexisting peacefully many moons ago. So it clearly doesn’t have to be like this. How can there be any semblance of peace when the IDF seem to have been given carte blanche and what recourse do the innocent Palestinians have?

@Lisaloobylou The fact that settler violence is still going on and there have been retaliations because of this film shows that more awareness and accountability needs to take place. But when you have Trump with his weird AI video of Bibi and him sunbathing, erecting a golden Donald statue etc. and then you think, what hope do innocent Palestinians actually have? I personally can’t get over the recent satellite images of Palestine and to see the devastation caused on such a wide scale and to know that there is still settler violence in Palestinian communities where they are just living their lives, it’s such a sad state of affairs.

Biden impossed some sanctions against some of the settlers which trump has removed
one of trumps new governments member said this land belongs to Jews because of biblical reasons.

when you’ve extremists in the governments (USA and Israel) that support settlers there is little Palestinians can do to protect their houses

ScrollingLeaves · 08/03/2025 20:22

Watching niw I have just seen the Israeli soldiers destroy a little hut like school for little children. Israel the destroyer. No Hamas as an excuse.

This was 2022. These Palestinian people will understand those soldiers as being terrorists.

ScrollingLeaves · 08/03/2025 20:32

Now filling up a well with cement. Water is only for the illegal settlers.

^Classified document reveals IDF ‘firing zones’ built to give land to settlers*
In a top-secret meeting held in 1979, revealed here for the first time, then-Agricultural Minister Ariel Sharon explained that firing zones were meant to create 'land reserves' for settlements, as part of his larger plan of establishing 'ethnic borders' between Jews and Palestinians.

Last paragraph:

That firing zones are used to bolster the settlement project and the dispossession of the native population of the occupied territories is, by now, an open secret, and everyone is in on it — except the Palestinians.
