Conflict in the Middle East

Has anyone watched No Other Land by Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham & Palestinian activist Basel Adra?

Just that, really. I’ve been meaning to watch No Other Land after a friend highly recommended it. She said Basel Adra, the Palestinian journalist, one of the co-directors, shares eye-opening insights and footage on X (formerly Twitter) about the experiences of those living in the West Bank.

I’ve been told that it documents the forced displacement of Palestinian communities in the West Bank, apparently with both directors offering a unique perspective from opposite sides of the conflict.

For those who have seen it – what did you think?

Haaretz 6th March
Why Is Oscar Winner 'No Other Land' So Painful for American Jews?
To those in the American Jewish community whose immediate response to the Oscar-winning film is dismissal or hostility, here's why you should think again.

Last paragraph:
I will continue to invite my friends to view painful images and ask difficult questions, to engage new understandings of reconciliation and justice, to consider Palestinian narratives, names, and perspectives underrepresented in the mainstream American Jewish community. I will do so as a prayer: that every post, every conversation, every story might shake one friend, one fellow traveler, into looking in a different direction, toward collective liberation. As the filmmaker said onstage: "There is another way."

Watching niw I have just seen the Israeli soldiers destroy a little hut like school for little children. Israel the destroyer. No Hamas as an excuse.

This was 2022. These Palestinian people will understand those soldiers as being terrorists.

That’s the thing @ScrollingLeaves. There’s a noticeable disparity in how these incidents are covered, one would need to seek out sources, with certain narratives being amplified while others are downplayed or ignored. The situation is far more complex than is often presented. When do Palestinians have the right to defend themselves? What means are available to them? What legal recourse do they have? And what are the actual consequences for settler violence? It often seems that any repercussions are minimal, creating an ongoing cycle of injustice. The lack of clarity and accountability is deeply concerning.

@EasterIssland Thanks for sharing this. I’m surprised that the film is now being accused of propaganda by the Miami Beach City Commissioner. I also didn’t realise that the Israeli culture minister called it “sabotage” especially since I saw it as a hopeful attempt to highlight the possibility of peaceful reconciliation, given that it was co-directed by a Palestinian activist and an Israeli journalist.

Thanks for sharing. It’s absolutely horrifying that the IDF can be so cruel and there doesn’t even seem to be any justification for it and there usually is. I don’t understand the need to exert their authority in such a way.

Cruel? Did you see what Hamas did on October 7th?

Have you seen what the IDF have been doing for decades? Abusing and oppressing Palestinians.

Well said. The Palestinians have been oppressed, raped, murdered and otherwise brutalised for the last 76 years. After seen the horrors that have been inflicted on the Palestinians for over a year, I have zero doubt that nothing happened on October 7th that hasn't happened to the Palestinians after October 7th and the 75 years before.

cactuswoman · 14/03/2025 04:42

Yes I've watched it. It's amazing and I highly recommend it to everyone.

Oh so dismissive of what has happened to Jewish people over centuries! The Jewish community deserves a place, their labs where they can live without fear.
They are surrounded by countries, full of those who hate them & that want to wipe them off the face of the earth.
I’ll pass on on this propaganda piece

EasterIssland · 14/03/2025 08:04

I’m still amazed by people that support extremists that kill and set fire to other peoples houses. I’m not sure why but it’s something that surprises me a lot.

Well according to them it's just propaganda even when it's Jewish people who are coming forward to speak out against it.

What does that have to do with the thread?

I don't think the film is suggesting there isn't a place for Israel to exist. It's showing what is happening with occupation and extremists. In most circumstances today, people tend to view occupation and extremist violence as not being particularly acceptable. They still happen, though, so it's important to be able to recognise them and discuss them.

Why do you think it's a propaganda piece?

Some of us do chat on mn about others things and it's quite nice if everyone realises that but sadly some don't. I won't mention names but easy to see frequent citme poster derailing on non gaza threads. I pointed out on that thread that she'd be unhappy if similar happened on the citme threads. We're all not totally obsessed with gaza and do chat about others things 🙄

RedHot2025 · 14/03/2025 09:28

I imagine my post will be reported for derailing but it appears OK for some to do that if its gaza chat.

I think people in Canada can probably still view No Other Land, so hopefully they can benefit from the opportunity to consider and reflect on the issues it discusses.

I think it's a shame that people are trying to prevent distribution and publicity for it - it's a joint Israeli and Palestinian piece of work, and this kind of dialogue and collaborative approach to the issues of co-existence may be so important for working towards a solution that allows for sustainable peace and healing.

You've missed the point entirely. The other thread is about Tariffs not land. Not distribution of a film. People can talk about others things. I realise gaza is important but there are other topics of chat too.

About Canada imposing tariffs following Trump imposing tariffs on them. Absolutely nothing to do with Gaza at all but that doesn't bother some.

Anyway still not heard your view on if tariffs work?

Sanctions are usually used..Russia has loads against them but they still.fight.

The EU are also imposing tariffs on the US following the US moves on tariffs on the eholw if Europe. Strange bug tariffs actually seem to cause more damage since prices rise gir everyone.

RedHot2025 · 14/03/2025 10:02

Bug tarrifs. What on earth are they?

caramac04 · 14/03/2025 10:05

I hadn’t heard about this - probably I’m living under a rock. Thank you, I will watch this.
