The carbon cost of rebuilding Gaza will be greater than the annual greenhouse gas emissions generated individually by 135 countries

A cost of this conflict that is often overlooked, and has repercussions for the whole world...

Scirocco · 08/06/2024 15:32

The global north (specifically the West) creates the carnage, and the global south will bear the brunt of the climate consequences yet again.

Yet another reason why it is such a shame that Hamas started this war, in an attempt to prevent the peace initiatives under way last year between Israel and other arab states.

You've lost me, in what sense are Hamas or Israel part of 'the West' or 'the global north'?

Israel and Palestine are both in the Northern hemisphere. The main suppliers and manufacturers of the weapons causing large scale destruction in Gaza are based in the West.

That's not how global north & south are defined (which goes to show how limited a concept it is). Australia is in the southern hemisphere but noone would consider it 'global south'. A lot of North Africa, ME & Asia are technically northen hemisphere but classed as 'global south'. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_North_and_Global_South

If it is pro Hamas to think people deserve homes, schools, hospitals, infrastructure vital to life, what is called when you want children to be left to survive in rubble 'as a warning'?

SharonEllis · 16/07/2024 17:29

Though, having said tat @Scirocco I think Israel counts as north because its so highly economically developed.

I would agree with that - it's a highly technologically and economically developed country.

How is it pro-Hamas to point out that war and widespread destruction of societies has a climate cost?

How is it pro-Hamas to think that innocent people deserve the same rights to things like water, food, shelter and healthcare as we would want for ourselves?

More pro-Hamas whining
Whose pro- Hamas?

Israel has no incentive to rebuild Gaza. It can stay in ruins, as a warning.
I doubt the rest of the international community would leave it ruins. Their incentive for rebuilding is humanity and the recognitions of Palestinian civilians basic human rights: the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education

Like Australia which is classed as Global North and is blue, as is Israel, on the map you posted.

Tbf, I was incorrect in referencing Palestine there - the status of the Occupied Territories isn't as clearcut as saying they should be classed the same as Israel.

PurpleChrayn · 17/07/2024 09:54

Maybe Hamas should have thought of that before it massacred over a thousand people and took hostages including Holocaust survivors and a literal baby.

FAFO.

By your (twisted) logic Israel should have thought about it's horrendous treatment of the Palestinians for the last 75 years. How many literal babies have been killed by Israel in the last twenty years alone? A lot more than one.

This isn't Twitter, take that crap elsewhere. It isn't tolerated here. And this is no laughing matter, Israel's actions would affect all of us. Also, I wonder what the Finding Out part of Israel's Fucking Around for the last 75 years by brutally oppressing the Palestinians and committing genocide against them would be?

poshsnobtwit · 19/07/2024 12:30

@10UsernamesNotAvailableTryAnotherOne don't be surprised, I don't usually remember usernames but will never forget this one's posts, deleted within minutes thankfully but absolutely blood curdling.

ICJ orders Israel to pay "full reparations", restitution & compensation to all Palestinians for its all "wrongful acts" under the occupation since 1967.
I wonder if one day a court will say one day that Israel has to pay for full reparation of Gaza as well

It's tokenism, but at least it's a start.

She doesn't have to take it anywhere else.

What genocide by the way. Gazas population has hugely increased over the last few years.

I'm fed of people defending this lot- they're losing a war they started.

They were offered a state 75 years ago, rejected it and lost the war they started.

How does it make them victims to lose wars they keep starting.

If they did get rid of Israel (they won't by the way) it will just be another Arab failed state a la Syria. There won't be a benevolent democracy in Israels place. Hamas is a brutal regime and you better hope they never succeed.

This lot? Who would that be? The dead babies? The children orphaned? Amputees? Those trapped under the rubble?

I'm sorry that it's really bothering you to see that rational people can see the Palestinians as victims. The world has woken up and can see Israel and it's policies for what it is. If that hurts you, you need to examine your own self and morals.

Scirocco · 19/07/2024 23:09

Talking about the climate cost of a war isn't about sides, it's about the planet.

War is a manmade environmental disaster as well as a humanitarian one, and there are consequences that will affect people around the world; even people who might never have even heard of Israel or Palestine.

The costs of making, shipping and then using weapons of such destructive force go far beyond money. We're all going to be the victims of climate change if we don't start taking it seriously and considering how our actions impact upon the world.
