https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/un-palestinian-refugee-agency-investigates-staff-suspected-role-israel-attacks-2024-01-26/

From the Guardian 5 hours ago;

"UK suspends UNRWA support after Israeli allegations The UK has temporarily paused future funding of UNRWA, saying it is “appalled by allegations that UNRWA staff were involved in the 7 October attack against Israel”.
A statement sent to the Guardian by the UK’s foreign, commonwealth and development office said:
'The UK is appalled by allegations that UNRWA staff were involved in the 7 October attack against Israel, a heinous act of terrorism that the UK government has repeatedly condemned.

The UK is temporarily pausing any future funding of UNRWA whilst we review these concerning allegations.'

We remain committed to getting humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza who desperately need it."

@Kindatired I found Daniella Weiss comments about starving the Palestinians really chilling. I think it was the matter of fact tone it was said In. The whole conference regarding settlements in Gaza was absolute madness.

It was disgusting. And she's an absolute psychopath.

Since AOC's New York district has many Jewish people in it, I'll be watching the November 2024 election with interest.

Amazing if NOT wanting 2 million people to starve to death can cause you to lose an election.

TrigTannet · 30/01/2024 00:53

It looks like is 1,200 UNRWA employees who were involved in the terrorist attack on October 7th. https://www.wsj.com/world/middle-east/at-least-12-u-n-agency-employees-involved-in-oct-7-attacks-intelligence-reports-say-a7de8f36 Most of the article is behind a paywall, and I have a feeling mn don’t like it when you copy and paste it into a thread. But the video and the beginning are visible.
1,200! That’s nearly 10%. It’s no wonder Hamas were managing to steal so much aid and use UN and civilian infrastructure “without anyone noticing”.

What's happened to all the aid that has already been sent, do you think? If 2 million people are starving, the most generous interpretation would suggest some mismanagement going on, yeah? Maybe another agency could do it better.

Most Americans, regardless of their religion, are happy for those suffering in Gaza to receive aid.

I read some reports on twitter that UK banks are stopping donations people are making to UNRWA. Has anyone who has donated had a problem? Mines seems to have went ok but I'm in Scotland where the government doesn't support genocide so...

I used my credit card and it went through no problem (Amex)

inkworks273 · 30/01/2024 03:09

@Murica Israel is preventing the aid from getting through...

It is not being allowed in... which is what has been happening for a very long time. This is why people are starving to death

@PeasfullPerson
I wouldn’t underestimate Democratic support for AOC’s views
50% of Democrats believe Israel is committing genocide, 30% are not sure and only 20% think not!

Poll: 50% of Biden voters say Israel committing genocide in Gaza

The shocking poll result comes as Democratic divisions over Israel continue to deepen, and the death toll in Gaza surpasses 25,000.

Jesus, pay attention. Israel is denying aid to the Palestinians they've been bombing for almost 4 months. Isn't that vile?

Rangelife · 30/01/2024 13:26

@Murica how much is 'all that aid'? What figure are we talking about?

hogmanayhoolie · 30/01/2024 14:03

All that aid previously. What exactly were UNRWA doing with my tax funded aid all these years?

Plus the extra our first minister sent. Where did that go?

Probably sitting in a lorry at the border being blocked by Israel like most of the other aid.

Well they educated(well did when there were schools) almost 300,000 children and do a very good job of it given the extremely high literacy rate in Gaza. 42% of the children that they educate were in need of psychological support due to Israeli violence, they tried to offer a safe space and access to psychosocial intervention for these traumatised children where they could flourish. They also used to feed over 1million people due to food insecurity caused by Israels blockade, I'm sure you know about the flour they would deliver to over 50 bakeries in Gaza, that was in the news when Israel was systematically destroying all of them.

Those are 2 things, there are many, many others. The idea that UNWRA have been sitting around twiddling their thumbs for years isnt true. Israel have attacked pretty much every aid agency in Gaza in an attempt to prevent aid from reaching the people who need it, this is all part of their plan as the Israeli defence minister ordered a complete siege on the Gaza Strip, there will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed. This is Israel sticking to their word and making sure they have no food by any means necessary.

I'm sorry youve lost me. Are you implying that there is something about having food and an education provided by charity that makes the Israeli blockade implausible? I believe prisoners in most countries have access to food and education too.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 30/01/2024 14:55

UNWRA also provided health care.

Most countries have food, education and health care in prisons. Which countries were you thinking of @hogmanayhoolie that don't have these things?

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 30/01/2024 15:02

@Lanabigbanana aid arriving in Egypt does not go straight to Gaza. It has to go to Israel, get checked and then if allowed it goes and joins the queue at Rafah.

100 lorries a day are required to sustain life. So far an average of 88 a day have been getting through. Hence aid being included in the preliminary measures.

You can see a basic update here https://www.ochaopt.org/content/hostilities-gaza-strip-and-israel-reported-impact-day-114

United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs - occupied Palestinian territory | Hostilities in the Gaza Strip and Israel - reported impact | Day 114

The snapshot provides a comprehensive overview of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza as of 29 January 2024, including casualties, particularly among women and children.

What does aid going to the Rafah border prove? Absolutely nothing. Not sure why you posted that link to be honest.

Lanabigbanana · 30/01/2024 15:21

@NerdWhoEatsMedlar "aid arriving in Egypt does not go straight to Gaza. It has to go to Israel, get checked and then if allowed it goes and joins the queue at Rafah."

No argument about that.

No-one is 'blocking aid' as another poster claimed.

Since Israel presented its case at the tribunal, Egyptian and Arab media have repeatedly quoted the Israeli defence team's lawyer, Christopher Staker, who stated on Friday that "access to the Gaza Strip from Egypt is under Eqyptian control, and Israel is not legally obligated to allow access to Gaza from its territory."
London-based Arabic-language newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat spoke with Raha Ahmad Hassan, a former aide to the Egyptian foreign minister, who said, "Egypt can provide international endorsements from all the senior officials who visited the Rafah crossing, to confirm that it was never closed to humanitarian aid. These, along with a legal memorandum with photos and evidence, will be submitted to the International Court."

They don't announce that they're blocking aid obviously. They're up on genocide charges in the Hague, they're not total idiots. They check every single item on every truck and if anything considered dual use, as much as a tent pole for a tent to house the millions of families displaced and made homeless by Israel is found the entire lorry has to travel back over an hour to have the offending item removed and the truck checked then they come back another time and try again. Israel is finding lots of minor reasons to stop the trucks from going through. One an hour went through in the time that a European Parliamentary group went to observe it last month. They were horrified and disturbed.

Desertrose2023 · 30/01/2024 16:56

This visual demonstrates the double standard in terms of Israel’s treatment of the UN.
