Catastrophic hunger - 40% of Gaza's population at risk of famine

Being reported by the Guardian:

40% of Gaza’s population is at risk of famine, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency said on Saturday.

“Every day is a struggle for survival, finding food and water,” the UN agency for Palestinian refugees added.

Too sad and completely unnecessary. If only adequate aid, food and water was allowed in.

Agree @EasterIssland don't seem to be traditional 'vessels' in any sense more like bits of pier - no-one is reporting this as a freak storm just bad weather

In better news - this was agreed by El-Sisi under direct pressure from Biden as a temporary emergency measure [in the knowledge that there'd be no action on opening Rafah as per ICJ] Also problems moving aid on from Kerem Shalom as it still opens onto a battlefield but hopefully some good will come of this and not be just more window-dressing/PR/letting Israel off the hook

Aid trucks from Egypt enter Gaza through Karem Abu Salem crossing

Four humanitarian aid trucks from Egypt have entered Gaza via Israel through the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing, according to the Egyptian broadcaster Al-Qahera.

The trucks were carrying fuel, according to the television network.

Efacsen · 27/05/2024 18:28

Whilst all eyes are naturally on Rafah

No humanitarian aid has been delivered today - over a hundred lorries of food and 4 of fuel were admitted thro' Kerem Shalom but are unable to be collected by aid agencies because of fighting in the area

Kindatired · 27/05/2024 20:03

The situation is dire.
From todays New York Times:
Aid trucks entering Gaza fall far short of meeting need
Southern crossings orange
Northern crossings purple
U.S.-built pier pale mauve
southern crisding orange, northern crossing purple.
To prevent starvation 350 per day is minimum needed. You can see that less than 300 made it a across on the best day.
This is collective punishment of innocent people

What a hero Biden is. Sending bombs with one hand and building a shitty pier to deliver a pittance of aid with the other. He is one of the only men in earth who could stop this but he is choosing not to. I'm sure all will be forgiven at election time due to his extraordinary humanitarian effort. Bastard.

The Israel lobby in the US is huge.
If Biden says no, to Israel, too loudly; he will lose the election.

He's probably already lost it to be fair.

I wouldn't be cool with facilitating a genocide but nobody gets to his position by being a nice person I suppose.

youngones1 · 27/05/2024 20:30

Vote for the Lib Dems , the only party opposed to the genocide.

Best word for him. I'd put the words vile and smug in front of it.
His parents must be so proud of the classy specimen they've raised.

EmberLight · 30/05/2024 19:54

And I've just seen a horrible video Motaz posted of a starving baby. I hope that soldier is proud. And all the scumbags who blame everyone but Israel for the starvation of the people in Gaza.

Scirocco · 31/05/2024 05:24

I'm shocked, @EasterIssland . Shocked, I tell you. Who could have seen that coming?

No, wait...

heartbreaking image of a baby before and after starvation. 💔💔💔

How evil do you have to be to be actively trying to make this happen?!

There's some truly awful photos* online [which I'm not going to copy here easy enough to find] of emaciated babies and young children being treated for malnutrition at a hospital in Deir al balah

*Fully accredited and verified - not Hamas/atrocity propaganda

DID ISRAEL BLOCK AID? “YES”

DID THE US STATE DEPT TWIST THE FACTS? “YES THE DID”

Former senior US official, Stacy Gilbert, confirms that the US State Dept twisted the reports to absolve Israel of responsibility for blocking humanitarian aid into Gaza.

There are reports from UN sources Margaret Harris that 85% of children did not eat for a whole day in the 3 days covered by the survey. This is awful- no child should be without food.
They didn’t release the details of when , how sampled, how
many etc but it seems that it was part of a nutritional survey. These nutritional surveys are a tool that’s used in disaster medicine to monitor improvements/ dis -improvements in populations at risk. Food distribution co-ordinating agencies would typically use a cluster sample rather than a random sample ( not feasible) in a disaster zone and there are strict protocols so they can be repeated at intervals to support feeding centres/ food distribution. The amount of food getting in has improved a bit because traders are getting in with stuff for people who can buy it, but the destitute are in real trouble.
This pause in fighting needs to go ahead so food can reach these vulnerable kids

UNWRA warn that there is not enough water for Palestinians to drink.

The situation is already dire, how is the world allowing Israel to do this?

1600 children under 5 in Gaza have acute severe malnutrition- this is typical counted by using a little paper arm band- if the arm circumference is less than 115mm or their growth chart measurements are equivalent to this, they meet the criteria. At that stage the little bodies are starting to bloat from lack of protein and water retention- the weight is just an illusion. They are often starting to loose the will to live and can’t eat or drink. Look at your own toddlers arm if you have a toddler and imagine what 115mm looks like.
This is a medical emergency!

So upsetting those poor babies 💔

I know exactly what malnutrition looks like unfortunately, my dd3 got very ill as a baby and very malnourished as a result with the bloated belly and muscle wastage. They completely regress stop walking, talking, smiling 😓I also know what it took to build her back up and how long it took and how much medical support she needed. These little ones don't stand a chance unless they get medical aid asap.

PeasfullPerson · 13/06/2024 19:31

Sorry to hear you and your little one went through that @Dulra

This is so cruel, and I suppose because it’s not a memorable one off event, this slow decline that for some will lead to disease and death, will happen fairly quietly and without much attention.

TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow · 14/06/2024 08:26

The thought of what those children are going through is absolutely awful , starving and the constant bombing the constant anxiety they must be living with as well
