Catastrophic hunger - 40% of Gaza's population at risk of famine

Being reported by the Guardian:

40% of Gaza’s population is at risk of famine, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency said on Saturday.

“Every day is a struggle for survival, finding food and water,” the UN agency for Palestinian refugees added.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2023/dec/30/israel-gaza-war-live-hamas-palestinians-khan-younis-deaths-un-aid-us#:~:text=40%25%20of%20Gaza's%20population%20is,is%20grappling%20with%20catastrophic%20hunger.

Too sad and completely unnecessary. If only adequate aid, food and water was allowed in.

So the trucks were on a military road out of bounds to civilians with an IDF escort but were still destroyed by 400 stone-throwing settlers whilst the army looked on - they are usually very good at dealing with this sort of scenario

What made them do nothing? We've already seen how they deal with Palestinians who they believe to be threatening aid convoys

I thought that people who throw stones are terrorists. Don't the IDF usually shoot stone throwers or at the very least put them in detention and torture them? It's almost like there is a two tier system in operation there....

Kindatired · 16/05/2024 19:21

@TextureSeeker I regret to tell you that you are factually incorrect.

Only Palestinians are shot for throwing stones.

Settlers enjoy impunity.

Today’s NY Times has a very detailed report by top news verification journalists, Ronen Bergman and Mark Mazzeti ( the latter a Pulitzer Prize winner). Of interest, Bergman is Israeli himself and the parents were Holocaust survivors. The investigation took a year and it’s pretty damning.

That looks like a really great article. I haven't time to read it all now but it's really good to see Israeli terrorism being called what it is. For far too long people have minimised what can only be described as acts of terror by Israelis, I saw someone the other day on here describe the situation in the West Bank as 'unfortunate'. I don't know why but Jewish extremism and terrorism seems to be a really taboo topic and we are all just supposed to pretend like it doesn't exist.

COGAT_IDF claim 356 trucks into Gaza yesterday!

This is good for the recipients and good timing for Israel who are presenting their defence today at the ICJ - part of which is the amount of humanitarian aid they are allowing into Gaza

It was allegedly delivered via Kerem Shalom and Erez

It makes the total amount since the closure of Rafah around 460 trucks - agreed need is still 500/day so a fraction of what is required - about ?10%

,

Efacsen · 17/05/2024 05:53

Yet another Gaza bound aid truck was attacked in the WB yesterday - thankfully the IDF were able to rescue the driver who was being beaten by the settlers but not the aid or vehicle which was set on fire

No arrests

Why is Egypt still not opening her borders?? They could easily taken the people of Gaza into their massive country but best thing is to give them a temp home on the border and they can go back when Hamas is finished which should not be too long now

Why doesn’t Israel allow aid in as instructed by ijc and also doesn’t do anything when settlers destroy aid and even attack the lorry drivers ?

You know the answer but for the benefit of lurkers:
-Because Egypt would then be complicit with forced depopulation which is a war crime.
-Because it would likely destabilise the Sinai peninsula- the terrorist with their new recruits would capitalise on such a forced displacement and on the desire of the Palestinians to go home and would likely use the Sinai peninsula as a launch pad for attacks on the occupying forces which in turn would lead to retaliatory strikes by the superior Israeli forces.
-Because Egypt can barely feed and educate its own population and the move would be unpopular and destabilising. Look at the destabilising effect of half that number on a wealthy country like Britain formerly a moderate democracy. -Because Egypt didn’t cause the problem and Israel did. Israel is currently an occupying power and under international law, the responsibility to ensure humanitarian aid rests with Egypt.

Rubbish

Egypt wont help out on a temp basis as they fear Hamas would sneak in and that is a fact

And FYI - it WAS Hamas that "caused the problem" on Oct 7th 2023, fact

Why doesn’t Israel allow aid in as instructed by ijc and also doesn’t do anything when settlers destroy aid and even attack the lorry drivers ?

You full well know there was a rocket attack on the IDF when they were monitoring aid through the Rafah pass and this is why it closed and that is a fact

Why did Hamas on Oct 7th set out to kill civilians and in the process kidnapped children and women and some were raped - why??

Bud, I'm no fan of the Israeil leader or the settlers in the West Bank but to blame Isrel for the woes of the ordinary people of Gaza, you need to try harder as no one is a fool and all can see and recall Oct 7th

Importantly, Hamas got voted in by the majority in Gaza when Israel forced out settlers and look what Hamas has done to Gaza

Billions have been given to Gaza by the Arab nations in conjunction with the west for the people of gaza - Yet, Hamas spend it on tunnels and themselves and forgot about the ordinary people of Gaza

Once Hamas is kicked out, hostages released, settlers are kicked out of the West bank,
and along with Isrels leader there will be peace for both the people of Gaza and Israel

Kindatired · 18/05/2024 18:58

Yes, it’s very likely that Hamas operatives would cross the border with bona fide refugees and use the Sinai Peninsula as a base putting Egypt in the line of fire from Israel. They probably already sneak in for the purpose of arms smuggling fairly regularly but to consolidate a base on Egyptian territory wouldn’t be good for anyone.

Rubbish. they don’t do anything when settlers are destroying the aid ! They should make sure the aid enters Gaza. That’s what ijc has asked them to do.

ill ignore the rest of your comment as it’s a completely derailment of this thread. Something that it’s against the mn guidelines as we keep telling you time after time.

Desperate scenes in Gaza as aid trucks arrive from US floating pier

Many photos online of thousands and thousands of people lining the coast watching the food aid being unloaded and then mobbing the trucks and taking the aid - no details of deaths/injuries from IDF trying to protect the aid or how much aid is getting to the warehouse for orderly distribution

6 police officers were killed in Rafah yesterday in a targeted attack by IDF whilst protecting aid distribution

Efacsen · 20/05/2024 07:35

You full well know there was a rocket attack on the IDF when they were monitoring aid through the Rafah pass and this is why it closed and that is a fact

The Hamas rocket attack was on Asilat IDF base close to the Kerem Shalom Crossing where tanks and troops were massing prior to the land invasion of Rafah - the Rafah crossing [not pass] is about 2 miles away from the rocket attack

These are the actual facts

Just read iccs statement regarding netanyahus arrest warrant. One of them is for “starvation of civilians as a method of warfare as a war crime”

Not good news from WFP

Famine will spread with aid operations ‘near collapse’ in Gaza

Abeer Etefa, a spokesperson for the UN’s World Food Program (WFP), warns “humanitarian operations in Gaza are near collapse”. If food and other supplies don’t resume entering Gaza “in massive quantities, famine-like conditions will spread”, she said.

Etefeh said WFP stopped distribution in Rafah after exhausting its stocks. It continues passing out hot meals in central Gaza and “limited distributions” of food packages there, but “food parcel stocks will run out within days”, she said.

Etefa said 10 trucks entered through the US-made pier on Friday and were taken to its warehouse in central Gaza. But a delivery Saturday of 11 trucks was stopped by crowds of Palestinians who took supplies, and only five trucks made it to the warehouse. No further deliveries came from the pier on Sunday or Monday, she said.

Efacsen · 24/05/2024 08:07

''On Wednesday, 27 of the total 70 trucks that entered Gaza through all land and sea crossings came through the pier, The Associated Press reports, citing US statistics.''

More on the floating pier - part of which came adrift last night in heavy seas and had to be re-attached

US aid ships face trouble in Gaza due to heavy seas

As Joe Biden boasted about US aid efforts in Gaza during his West Point military academy commencement speech, saying that the US army and navy has built a temporary pier in the Mediterranean “in record time” to deliver aid to Palestinians, efforts on the ground tell a different story.

On Saturday, US Centcom announced that four US army vessels were affected by “heavy sea states”:

The vessels broke free from their moorings and two vessels are now anchored on the beach near the pier. The third and fourth vessels are beached on the coast of Israel near Ashkelon. Efforts to recover the vessels are under way with assistance from the Israeli navy.

EmberLight · 26/05/2024 01:03

What a hero Biden is. Sending bombs with one hand and building a shitty pier to deliver a pittance of aid with the other. He is one of the only men in earth who could stop this but he is choosing not to. I'm sure all will be forgiven at election time due to his extraordinary humanitarian effort. Bastard.
