As Israel pounds Gaza, BBC journalists accuse broadcaster of bias https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/23/as-israel-pounds-gaza-bbc-journalists-accuse-broadcaster-of-bias

The BBC has been accused by its journalists of failing to tell the story of the Israel-Hamas conflict accurately, investing greater effort in humanising Israeli victims compared with Palestinians, and omitting key historical context in coverage.

In a 2,300-word letter written to Al Jazeera by eight UK-based journalists employed by the corporation, the BBC is also said to be guilty of a “double standard in how civilians are seen”, given that it is “unflinching” in its reporting of alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

“The BBC has failed to accurately tell this story – through omission and lack of critical engagement with Israel’s claims – and it has therefore failed to help the public engage with and understand the human rights abuses unfolding in Gaza,” the letter reads. “Thousands of Palestinians have been killed since October 7. When will the number be high enough for our editorial stance to change?”

Thanks for that. None of it is a surprise unfortunately, other than I wasn't aware that they openly celebrated the 12th at the BBC though it shouldn't come as a surprise.

The biggest surprise is that it was reported in the Belfast Telegraph which is also very pro-unionist 😅

Edited to add: these biases have very real consequences. Irish people in Britain were treated as terrorists in the 70s and 80s and beyond even. Also a large percentage of British people have very unfortunate attitudes about the conflict that follow the BBC line. Obviously it's not just the BBC who caused this but they are certainly part of it. And these attitudes persist to this day.

Edited

Sorry, just noticed your edit.

I absolutely agree with you. This is what prompted me to start posting about Palestine in the first place. I was flabbergasted by the mass media bias and manipulation and sometimes flagrant undisguised propaganda.

For me, it was very clear to see, but I knew that lots of people believe the mainstream media unquestioningly when it comes to news about the ME.

I am neither Palestinian nor a leftist. I think being a mother seeing all those small children being killed mercilessly and especially the shameful stance of our spineless government prompted me to try to share awareness and help people educate themselves on the topic.

Unfortunately there are some posters who are so full of hate that they cannot even acknowledge the suffering of Palestinians, let alone criticise the genociders.

We talk about the wolf because we know the wolf is listening

It is in the hope they hear and learn something

So do we believe this thread was deleted because for the best interests of Jewish people or do we think it was because the OP got caught out in their own lies and hate within the first page. I do wonder about mumsnet decisions like this, I really do.

They let threads stand that are equally horrific in Jew hate to this, however delete the ones that show everyone clearly what we are up against

It is something to ponder on for sure

The different language used by the media to describe Palestinians vs Israelis is shocking. Screenshot attached.

That’s shocking.
Its this sort of emotive language that breeds contempt for one side.
It sets one against the other and justifies hate.
But we see the same disparity of language being used here on MN.

Levy complained about the language used by the Irish PM on the release of the Irish girl by Hamas.
It is not for one to dictate the narrative of another. All must be allowed to speak.
The press must be equal, however or they will stir up hate and misunderstanding.

The choice of words in BBC Radio 4 news bulletins has been worrying me since the start of all this.

However, strangely I have found what seems to be more balanced and informed discussion and news on the BBC World Service, particularly Business Matters, and The News Room.

The BBC are trying to be objective but as most of their journalists are anit Israel it must be hard for them.

https://www.jewishnews.co.uk/police-investigating-claims-of-antisemitic-hate-speech-in-uk-mosques/

"Police are investigating allegations of antisemitic hate speech by preachers at mosques across England.
It comes after TalkTV reported that leaked footage showed preachers calling for Jews to be killed and Israel to be destroyed during sermons at mosques in London, Birmingham, Liverpool, and Northampton.
Alleged footage from a sermon at the Redbridge Islamic Centre in Ilford, east London, shows one speaker praying with his congregation in Arabic to “curse the Jews and the children of Israel” and to “tear apart their (Jewish) community and ruin their houses”, TalkTV reported.

Another clip reportedly from a Liverpool mosque shows a preacher telling his audience to “march on Israel” and to kill Jews “indiscriminately”.
West Midlands Police, the Met Police and Northamptonshire Police told the PA news agency they were investigating the allegations.
Merseyside Police has been approached for comment on the incident in Liverpool.
Referring to the incident at Redbridge Islamic Centre, a spokesperson for the Met said: “Officers have carried out a number of inquiries since being made aware of this video and officers from the East Area Command are investigating.”
Regarding footage in Northampton, a spokesperson for the regional police force said they took the allegations “very seriously” and were investigating to establish whether criminal offences had been committed."

Yes. This is part of the subliminal conditioning that's been going on for a long time.

I recommend this book by Chomsky and Herman. Although it was written in 1988, is still very relevant today, especially The Propaganda Model.

The propaganda model for the manufacture of public consent describes five editorially distorting filters, which are said to impact reporting of news in mass communications media. The model seeks to explain how populations are manipulated and how consent for economic, social, and political policies, both foreign and domestic, is "manufactured" in the public mind due to this propaganda.

A mocked up version of the kind of news bias we are seeing if it was during the Second World War:

Why would they do this.
They must know someone else will give the correct translation.
How stupid

SequentialAnalyst · 28/11/2023 00:08

It's very subtle.
Just now on BBC R4:
In main news report just now it said 11 Israeli hostages released in return for "over 30" Palestinians - when BBC News had just said in the headlines of the self-same report that 33 had been released.

This is worth a listen on BBC.

Lose, you mean as Emily Hand was described as being lost?
The word didn't seem to matter then.

That's only the case if you insist on only reading the first paragraph of that statement and ignore that it was paraphrasing the Luke 15 parable The Prodigal Son. "This son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found." Emily's father was told she was dead and then she turned out to be alive and was brought back to him.

I’ve seen accusations today against bbc for not covering SAs court case. Definitely BBC is not coming out well out at all in this war
