As Israel pounds Gaza, BBC journalists accuse broadcaster of bias https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/23/as-israel-pounds-gaza-bbc-journalists-accuse-broadcaster-of-bias

The BBC has been accused by its journalists of failing to tell the story of the Israel-Hamas conflict accurately, investing greater effort in humanising Israeli victims compared with Palestinians, and omitting key historical context in coverage.

In a 2,300-word letter written to Al Jazeera by eight UK-based journalists employed by the corporation, the BBC is also said to be guilty of a “double standard in how civilians are seen”, given that it is “unflinching” in its reporting of alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

“The BBC has failed to accurately tell this story – through omission and lack of critical engagement with Israel’s claims – and it has therefore failed to help the public engage with and understand the human rights abuses unfolding in Gaza,” the letter reads. “Thousands of Palestinians have been killed since October 7. When will the number be high enough for our editorial stance to change?”

I haven't been following the news today but if what you're saying is correct, if you want them to be unbiased they're doing the right thing. They can't do more than say "SA have had their say, it'll be Israel's turn tomorrow" as they'll be reporting on just one side of the story. That'd surely be the definition of bias.

They shouldn't tell people the vile things Israel are being accused of until Israel has had the right to defend themselves against those things. Then they can report on all of it at the same time without stirring up unnecessary amounts of hatred.

Unless more hatred is what you're after, of course.

Right now In BBC’s mobile version there is no mention about it. Not even this happened today. Hopefully nothing will be said tomorrow then when it’s Israel’s turn

ps. Not sure what you’re saying that they can’t talk about what one party is acussing the other one off until both have had their say. Pretty sure when jonnhybdeep / amber case was happening we were getting a brief update about what was being said each day. Yes I know totally different scenario , but to me it makes sense to speak about what Israel is being blamed off today , and to report about what Israel says tomorrow. It’s not like we’ve not heard anything at all until today in the news

The BBC have to strick to the normal guidelines about reporting a court case I can imagine. So there is a limit to what they can say at this point if they are treating this as a legal case heard.

They have also been a little busy today with our own middle eastern situation that has been ramping up all day. They are the British Broadcasting Corporation after all.

This is the latest:

"US and UK forces have begun air strikes against Houthi rebel targets in Yemen, US officials say"

“Criminal proceedings against the two women are active and they each have the right to a fair trial."

“It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."

The above is a fairly normal message sent out about a court case. Obviously this whole thing is different and way more complicated. Whoever I am sure there are still guidelines that cover this type of situation and we know the BBC tend to try and stick to whatever guidelines they have. I mean they refused to call terrorists because it went against some guidelines or whatever apparently

I believe you, I'm just saying that they did report it.

Why "UK based"?

Prrambulate · 12/01/2024 00:18

The BBC must be so grateful for the Post Office enquiry.

Don't even get me started about the BBC and that one. Years of issues with their reporting and sometimes lack of reporting on the Post Office situation

They're just speeding up their decline and eventual demise. A lot of younger people do not watch/read traditional media and access news via different social media platforms. It's a good thing though, as this is so blatant that more trust will be eroded and many people have noticed the bias. Ironically it will affect the MSMs ability to control any narratives they want to amplify.

I’ve seen accusations today against bbc for not covering SAs court case. Definitely BBC is not coming out well out at all in this war

I actually do not understand why they are not covering it.

This is something that I think some people are having issues with actually understanding and accepting. Some people still seem to believe that general news reporting on regular channels are non-biased and based on all available information. I guess that it is quite hard for some to actually realise that this is not really the case at all.

Unsure whether to put it here as it’s not bbc

Have you even seen the ad? And I thought it was paid for by Bob Kraft, so nothing to do with Israel.

It's an ad raising awareness of a recent and undeniable increase in antisemitism. That is all. If 10 000 people object to that message then it proves the ad was necessary.

Yes I’ve seen it. Seems it wasn’t the only ad

The tweet is not about whether the ad was needed or not but whether the broadcasting rules were broken by not informing the viewer that the ad is paid by international government.

Oh ok, thank you for explaining! I'd only heard of the antisemitism one.

I can see why this might be concerning. I clearly don't know enough about it to say more than that though!
