Anyone had any luck with Letrozole?!

I have just been prescribed this after TTC for 6 months (35) we had a fertility check up, everything was fine, although I had PCOS, although my periods are regular, so they didn’t think this was an issue.
I just haven’t really found many positive success stories with Letrozole, so was hoping someone might have some to share to give me a bit of hope?

@Victoriaspa We tried for about a year without medication. Then about a year with letrozole and metformin. Blood tests determined that my wife wasn't ovulating successfully with letrozole alone so then her doctor recommended adding the trigger shot with the max dose of letrozole. I have read many other trigger shot success stories on this site too.

Hi. Please can I join this thread? We have been TTC our third baby for 16 months after no problems conceiving our first two. I have just finished my first round of letrozole though it’s believed I ovulate naturally as my cycles are 28-34 days but told it can help even with a small degree of irregularity.

anyway, it hasn’t been a great success as I had four scans between days 9-21 and they never saw a dominant follicle. However, my lining has thickened in line with with an ovulatory cycle so they are saying they think I did ovulate but between scans and it was missed. I don’t feel convinced! Waiting for my period now. If it doesn’t come tomorrow I can have my dose increased so hoping and praying it holds off a bit longer! X

Victoriaspa · 10/08/2022 14:26

@Hoping43 did AF turn up? I have taken my 5 days of Letrozole so just waiting for ovulation now!

@Victoriaspa no it didn’t. Im
on CD 37 which is my longest cycle and I’m not pregnant so really feels like it’s missed everything up. I’ve never missed a period before 🙁

Victoriaspa · 10/08/2022 14:40

@Hoping43 oh no, how strange, what have the clinic said?

OP posts:
Hoping43 · 10/08/2022 16:17

@Victoriaspa i have to ring back on CD39. I’m guessing ultimately the dose wasn’t right but obviously can’t move forward with anything until my period comes. So don’t know how long they will leave my in this limbo or when/how my period will eventually come!

Alexis7890 · 10/08/2022 19:47

@Hoping43 that’s very different to our clinic, letrozole failed and as soon as they confirmed it failed around day 21 I was given a prescription for provera to start taking to be able to start a new cycle at a new dosage. Have they mentioned anything like that to you?

Hoping43 · 10/08/2022 20:02

@Alexis7890 No they haven’t mentioned it at all. Last conversation I had with the consultant was that I had ovulated between scans and they missed it because my lining had thickened to 13.7mm from 8.7mm but I was never convinced by it. Now I feel stressed that I’m just wasting more time and when is it ever going to come 😩 x

Hoping43 · 10/08/2022 20:17

@Alexis7890 how long did the provera take to work? I’m so anxious that I’m just in limbo wasting time 😭it’s causing me so much stress

Alexis7890 · 10/08/2022 20:25

@Hoping43 did they see a follicle that looked like it was going to ovulate? I take provera for 5 days then period starts 2-3 days later, i was told I can start taking it anytime after CD22 so then can get cracking with the next cycle and try 5mg

Hoping43 · 10/08/2022 20:44

@Alexis7890 No they didn’t see anything. They just said estrogen was coming from somewhere because my lining had thickened so they concluded that they missed it but I was never convinced and seems like I was right!

Alexis7890 · 10/08/2022 20:48

@Hoping43 that’s rubbish! Is there anyone you can speak to tomorrow? Or will they just say wait for your period to naturally come?

Hoping43 · 10/08/2022 20:58

@Alexis7890 i can call tomorrow but I feel like they’ll say to wait a few more days. My cycle is never longer than 34 days, there were no dominant follicles, I had no signs of ovulation and I’ve had no PMS symptoms so it feels obvious to me that it hasn’t worked 😭

Jmommy · 10/08/2022 21:05

I conceived on my first cycle of letrozole after 18ish months of actively ttc. Had not used contraception for another few years before but nothing ever happened. I also had suspected mild pco, even if I did get a positive opk in most cycles.

Alexis7890 · 10/08/2022 22:37

@Hoping43 is this through the nhs? Or private? What dosage did they give you for this cycle? All I can suggest is stand your ground. Norethisterone (not sure on spelling) can be used to bring on a period like provera does and you can buy that in pharmacies I think so could be worth a go so you know the period will come if the consultant won’t help?

Hoping43 · 10/08/2022 22:41

@Alexis7890 It’s private. They gave me 2.5mg. They said I ovulate myself anyway so that’s all I would need. I went for 4 scans between days 9-21 and I had 25 follicles but they were all 10mm or below each time I went. I never had any usual ovulation symptoms but my lining went to a post ovulation thickness. I was only going to do the letrozole for 3 months as a last ditch attempt before we do IVF (this is our third baby) but it’s all gone wrong! I’m worried they won’t do anything and my period will just never come if I haven’t ovulated x

Alexis7890 · 10/08/2022 22:45

@Hoping43 try a local pharmacy, they don’t sell provera but they usually sell norethisterone and that does the same thing so then at least you can get started on the next cycle! 2.5mg hasn’t worked for me so they’re trying me on 5 next cycle but I don’t ovulate naturally and if 5 fails I’ll go to injectables. I would expect you to be getting top care as it’s private!!

Hoping43 · 11/08/2022 08:25

@Alexis7890 great- thanks so much for replying to me. NHS wouldn’t give me letrozole as I ovulate naturally so I went private for one last shot before IVF but just feels like it’s made everything worse!

Victoriaspa · 11/08/2022 09:34

@Jmommy this sounds very much like me, thanks for sharing. I get positive opks and they said mild PCOS, so really hoping it will work. Can you remember what dose you were on?

OP posts:
Jmommy · 11/08/2022 18:47

@Victoriaspa it was probably 2.5mg cycle days 3-7. Had one scan mid cycle. Good luck!

Hoping43 · 12/08/2022 21:24

@Alexis7890 update from me…. The clinic want me to take norethisterone to induce a bleed but I’m worried about taking it because we’ve been trying all cycle and only stopped around 5 days ago so technically I could be pregnant as I have no idea if or when I ovulated. The GP suggested I wait another two weeks for a negative pregnancy test before I start it 😭. Im
already CD39 and my cycles without this are totally normal! They have said they want to keep me on the same dose next month. I just don’t get it but I think if they don’t increase my dose then I won’t take it. I don’t want this to happen again

Letrozole is used to induce ovulation, why have they given you this if you already ovulate naturally?

I also have mild PCOS but my body was pretty resistant! I ended up having to take 7.5mg before I would ovulate.

Have they also put you on Metformin? There is some evidence that it will increase success rates.

Hoping43 · 02/09/2022 09:04

@Res_Ipsa i have slightly irregular cycles 26-34 days. They said it could help regulate them more but it hasn’t. I haven’t ovulated on 2.5mg and 5mg also doesn’t seem to be working

Lisa3845 · 15/11/2023 06:20

My first month I produced 2 good looking follicles, but did not get pregnant. The second month I took the same dose of medication and produced 1 good follicle. I am happy to report that I am pregnant! I have PCOS and am very pleased with the outcome - https://onlinecheappills.com/letrozole.html
