Positive result but mirena coil in situ

Hi all please can I ask some advice... I have had pregnancy symptoms for a few weeks, weight gain, boobs feel bigger, sickness and then this week I've had a bleed which is absolutely the opposite of normal for me it's been like watery red if that helps (sorry tmi!!) and also getting pains in my left side this week, started Thursday. I already have 3 children and to be honest I would be delighted to have more, my oh and I were in talks about removing coil some point this year. I took a test this morning just because I had this feeling I was and I had one in and this was the result. The screen on the test is cracked, not sure that would affect its use but myself and OH believe we can see a line. How would you interpret this and do I need to seek advice with having coil in?? Anyone got stories of viable pregnancies with coil?

Thank you!!

You need to get medical advice ASAP. I believe the coil can make ectopic pregnancy much more likely. Fingers crossed for you.

SolitaA · 25/04/2021 09:12

As in 111 today or wait for GP tomorrow?

ThePlantsitter · 25/04/2021 09:13

I don't know so I would err on the side of caution and ring 111.

SolitaA · 25/04/2021 09:16

Thanks. Aww I really hope it's not ectopic. I'm so worried about that 😓

I used to be a midwife, and found umpteen coils embedded in placentas !
Do get advice regarding the pain and bleeding though.

ThePlantsitter · 25/04/2021 09:18

Yes I'm sorry to have to worry you but it's definitely a concern - but not a certainty! I hope it turns out well for you Flowers

rainbowthoughts · 25/04/2021 09:24

I would wait this one out. Thinking logically you have no reason to suspect an ectopic pregnancy, no symptoms. Yes the risk is higher with a coil in place however I would probably make a routine appointment as there isn't any course of treatment you would need at this stage. GP will refer you to EPU.

I'm not a doctor though, this is just how I would do it.

SolitaA · 25/04/2021 09:25

@dinosaurDiana as in after they'd birthed a healthy baby? 🤞🤞

ThePlantsitter · 25/04/2021 09:32

Well, the bleeding and pain in the side could be symptoms which is why I'd get it checked out earlier if poss especially if more kids are on the cards for you. I'm not a doctor either and I'm certainly not trying to scare you though, it's very likely there is nothing wrong.

Yes 🤞🏻

rainbowthoughts · 25/04/2021 09:36

God I'm so sorry I totally missed the pain in side, yes I would call 111 today!

OnlyTheHousekeeper · 25/04/2021 09:45

Are you sure it is still in there? You can feel
the strings?

SolitaA · 25/04/2021 09:50

I'm going to go and buy another test today an frer one and then make a decision when OH is home from work. Last time I checked all strings were there surely I would notice it coming out? Thanks for all support. I will keep you updated if I do go and get checked.

Well I had the copper coil and it fell out without my noticing. DC3 was the result!

The medical professionals I mentioned this to didn't find it particularly unusual so I guess it happens more than women are told 🤷‍♀️

SolitaA · 25/04/2021 11:18

Oh really?! Didn't know that could happen!

I would call 111 or ring the gp tomorrow. I've read that people can go on to have healthy pregnancies with their IUD in but there is always a chance it could end up being ectopic, so good to have it looked at. Hopefully it will be in the right place. Good luck!

I also have an IUD and I'm wondering if I could be pregnant because of all the symptoms I've been having recently. I've felt for some time that mine might be running out of hormone but my research tells me the Mirena should be effective for 5+ years and mine has only been in for 4 so I wasn't overly concerned. Now I'm not sure!

Cherryblossom2021 · 25/04/2021 17:23

Hi ladies just thought I’d add to this, my sister got pregnant with the mirena coil in and had my nephew last year, she had an early scan to see where the coil was because like@SolitaA she was worried , the coil had been in 5 years and was only still in because of covid and not being able to get an appointment to have it changed. Anyway long story short they located the coil strings and where the embryo was And dr asked my sister if she would like it removed or it could stay until birth and they would monitor her - she decided to have it removed and the dr just pulled it out with the locates strings, she had to have bed rest for a few days but the rest of pregnancy was fine . My nephew is an 8month old happy healthy baby so it is possible for things to go ok xx
Good luck

SolitaA · 25/04/2021 18:34

Thanks @cherryblossom2021 I'm too nervous to take another test in case it's negative 😬 I've already got excited at the thought of being pregnant! Think it's best to wait til the morning to test again. Does anyone ever get negative after a slight positive like mine?

OP posts:
Seoirnbru · 25/04/2021 18:37

Please phone 111 straight away. Pain in your side, light bleeding and a faintly positive pregnancy test are all red flags for ectopic especially when you have a coil in. Hopefully it’s not but it has to be ruled lute immediately.

Seoirnbru · 25/04/2021 18:38

Ruled out even!

mummabubs · 25/04/2021 18:43

If you hadn't said left sided pain I'd say just retest tomorrow but honest to God if you haven't already please call 111 and tell them all that you've said in your OP. They won't want to ask you to go anywhere if they don't deem it necessary but in the event that you are experiencing an ectopic pregnancy it can get very dangerous very quickly. (Don't want to worry you but equally it unnerves me if you haven't sought any medical advice with the left sided pain!)

AngelDelightUk · 25/04/2021 18:45

I know a few people who have become pregnant with the coil, I actually cringe if someone tells me they are getting it now.

Fingers crossed all is ok!

mummabubs · 25/04/2021 18:47

@SolitaA This is literally from the NHS website under symptoms of ectopic pregnancy. Please call 111 now to get advice and don't put the it off until tomorrow. X

Do give 111 a call the pain is more worrying than anything.

MadeForThis · 25/04/2021 19:08

It's worth a call to 111 just to reassure yourself.
