How long did you take to concieve number 2?

It took us 2 years to concieve DD (naturally) I fell PG a few weeks before I was due to go in for tests. She is now 14m and although I want another lo I also want a little bit more time with just us first.

I am worried that if I leave TTC we will end up with a very big gap between them.

Has anyone struggled with number one and gone on to concieve quickly with number 2? If I got PG today she would be nearly 2 which is too close for us but I also don't really want a 4 year gap

I just want some thoughts on this really.....

wanted to leave a reply so you are not worrying!!!!

DS1 2y11m was an accident!!!! i was on the pill !!!!

we started ttc in september 2006 and fell pregnant end of april this year, DD is due 3rd feb 2008.

My friend took 16 months to conceive first time round, no2 was an accident and was conceived from one go of unprotected sex.
If you are not over 35 you have more time to think about it but if you are I wouldn't wait. Have you read Toni Wechsler's book 'Taking Charge of your Fertility' I really recommend it (although it is pretty weighty) I used it both times (now trying in a more relaxed way for no3) and got pregnant after 4 months first time round and after 2 months second time round.

It happened straight away with our first and 2 months with our second.

There really is no way of knowing. You have to decide whether you can handle a smaller age gap if you try sooner or a bigger one if you wait until you are ready and then it may not happen immediately. Which is the better option for you.

Thanks! But I suppose what I am really asking (in my ramblings ) is if you had a long wait for number one does it always follow that number 2 will be hard work too?

I am in my early 30s so time for me is not the biggest rush! (yet!)

no 1 - about 10 months
no 2 - about 10 minutes
both were planned, ie we decided to ttc.

On the other side of the coin, it took 3 months to concieve our daughter and we've been trying for 17 months for number 2.

i think your very lucky if you manage to plan when they come..

I found out i was pg the night before dh was going in for tests...

2 cycles!

But the first cycle was 91 days long as I just came off the pill.

Hello DS took 18 months to conceive and we also had a date in for tests but I fell pregnant on hols a month before the tests were due. In same situation as you, didn't want a huge gap, but not a teeny one either. Decided to start trying when, if it did by some miracle happen first time, there would be a two-year gap. It did happen first time, and am expecting twins three weeks before DS turns two . Would have probably preferred a bit of a bigger gap, but am just so relieved we didn't have the worry of trying and trying and waiting like with DS.

You just never know cmoc. We took over 4 years to conceive dd (with a m/c which took 3.5yrs of that to conceive), and have been trying to conceive number 2 for a year so far.

A friend (who is an MNer so may post this herself) took 7 years to conceive her ds, but then conceived number 2 on her first attempt!

The only way to find out is to try, so you need to decide whether you would prefer to risk them being closer than you ideally want, or further apart than you really want, and then trying accordingly.

Yes as others have said there is absolutely no way to tell for sure.
People who struggle to conceive no.1 on average will struggle more with no.2 but that's on average. Some couples have sub-fertility which means they can get pregnant without intervention but it might take longer and luck plays quite a big part in this. Imagine a scenario where someone could only get pregnant in 1 in 15 cycles - that 1 cycle could be the first or the last out of the fifteen if you see my point.

DH and I were together for 4 months when DD was conceived. I fell pg again when DD was 8 months but miscarried. It has since taken 3 years to conceive this one (I'm 10 weeks pg)

First one instantly and 2nd one instantly! I have a 5yr age gap-one off to school, feet up for a bit then had the other one. Age gap doesn't make any difference to me/us.

Hi I have been in exactly your situation. Ds 1 took 2 years ttc, eventually needed treatment to regulate cycle at fertility clinic. Found infertility v. hard to handle. Felt very aggrieved throughout the whole process that sex ed is all about stopping getting pregnant, but no-one tells you it can be really difficult to conceive.

Knew we wanted another one and hopefully not too huge a gap, but I was dreading going through all that again and worrying how we could possibly fit in the treatment with a toddler around ...

So we didn't worry about contraception, although a less than 2 year gap wasn't in the plan ... and am now 10 weeks pg, ds is 14 mo. It happened at the very 1st possibility which neither of us were expecting! (Dp when I told him: 'But I don't understand - you let me to believe this would be a long and complicated process!') Don't know if I was hyper-fertile after stopping breastfeeding, or having ds1 had regulated my cycle, or just chance.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled this has happened and can now just see lots of advantages of having them close together - just wanted to say, make sure you would be happy with such an outcome when you make your decisions!

ooh yes, another vote for Toni Weschler here, that's how I initially discovered my problems were cycle-related ... and my plan was to chart my cycles this time in the hope of either conceiving or identifying any problems more quickly 2nd time round. But got pg before cycles came back

First one took nearly 14 months, then got pregnant while breastfeeding last month when she was 11 months old (while still breastfeeding.) Miscarried that one but had a scan last week which showed two eggs so my body is clearly hopeful.

It's really an unanswerable question though isn't it. My mum conceived and was pregnant with me at her six week checkup

8 years to conceive ds1. He was eventually conceived naturally just as we were about to have IUI.

Ds2 was conceived the first month of trying. .

We got on with it once we knew we wanted a second, fearing it might not be possible and to avoid a big age gap.
