BFP but I haven’t had sex since my last period!

We are trying for a baby after a missed miscarriage in early summer. 17 days ago my period came. It was bang on time, heavy, if anything heavier than usual, if anything lasted longer than normal.

For the past week I have been so nauseated. And I’ve had restless legs. These two things happened in all my previous pregnancies and never when I’m not pregnant. I refused to let myself test as it’s madness, I’m 42 and haven’t had sex since my period, only a crazy lady would test in these circumstances. But tonight I crumbled and tested. And it’s positive.

Has this happened to anyone else? Am I likely properly pregnant or did I miscarry and have residual hormones left? Any similar experiences would be gratefully receive right now.

I did have similar and the end result was that the egg hadn’t embedded properly to miss a period, but the period hadn’t cleared the tissue effectively so I had rising HCG. After two weeks I had another bleed and after that I was testing negative.

VP91x · 27/10/2020 07:00

Sorry you're in limbo, but the only way to truly know what is happening is to go and get a scan. Either head down to your nearest early pregnancy unit, or get a private scan done and it'll be able to give you the best answer.

I hope it is a positive outcome for you though xx

Hi @40PlusTTC sorry to hear what you’ve been going through. The confusion just adds to the distress doesn’t it.

Did you eventually test negative after Your MC? testIng after MC until you get a bfn allows you to see that you have gone back down to baseline and everything has cleared.

I had an MC at only 5 weeks and had so many symptoms the next Month or so that were so pregnancy like And that I don’t ever get unless pregnant. Stabbing pains in boobs, cramps, dark nipples and so nauseous I found my self bent over in Tesco huffing and puffing. I wasn’t pregnant it was just residual hormones.

If you Havnt had sex then you cannot be pregnant. So this would suggest your last pregnancy might be the culprit, either residual hormones or that everything hasn’t cleared....though the return of your period would suggest it has.

It might be worth doing a test not to see that you are PG but just to reassure you that you have gone back down to baseline and everything is clear.

Sending kind thoughts, it can be aN emotional time and your body acting up doesn’t help.

40PlusTTC · 27/10/2020 07:21

Thanks @Bouncytree. I did test negative after my D&C in June. It took a while to get the negatives and they thought there may be retained products but by August I was testing negative both on sticks and according to the hospital blood tests.

Could it be that your period wasn't a true period, and was instead some kind of pregnancy related bleed? Perhaps originally there were 2 and now there is just 1?

Bouncytree · 27/10/2020 07:57

That’s good news @40PlusTTC sounds like they took great care of you and made sure everything is clear.

If you are CD then your progesterone is beginning to rise which can lead to symptoms in any cycle. I suspect that’s whats up. I get 0 symptoms in this phase but after MC the symptoms were so strong and it’s a very strange and disconcerting experience...because it feels just like being pregnant. My cycles came back to normal straight away, but my body was a bit all over the place for a while. I even had what looked like colostrum.

WunWun · 27/10/2020 07:59

I think you need to speak to your GP and get referral this morning.

40PlusTTC · 27/10/2020 08:03

@Bouncytree but why would I be testing positive both last night and this morning if it was just progesterone rising?

I wouldn't waste energy thinking about it. Is your GP surgery not open now? Just call them.

Hellomoonstar · 27/10/2020 08:06

I normally bleed randomly throughout the first trimester including random flooding. Caused by heamatoma. However, ds3 I got nice three weeks added to my due date at my first scan. Which was very odd, I had a normal 8 day period right on time and heavy flow like normal. I must have ovulated early is all I been told.

A scan can give you an answer. But don’t book one to soon as it is hard to see if you less than 5weeks and some private scan say no to scans before 6 weeks. I used groupon to book a scan last year as it was cheaper.

40PlusTTC · 27/10/2020 08:06

@SnaggleBeast they open at 8.30 and I will definitely call them. It’s quite hard not thinking about it though.

40PlusTTC · 27/10/2020 08:11

Thanks @Hellomoonstar. That’s really interesting about your DC3 bleed. Based on when we last did the deed I would have to be at least 5+5 if I was pregnant. Based on when I think I ovulated last cycle I would be 6+2. I am sure I haven’t ovulated since then as I feel it very clearly each times I ovulate. So either I’m between 5-6 weeks pregnant or I conceived then miscarried at 4 weeks but still have pregnancy hormones in my system. I can’t think of any other explanation.

I don't know anything about this but just wanted to say to definitely ring your GP. Hope it all becomes clearer Thanks

Bertyb7 · 27/10/2020 08:25

Hello OP, same thing happened to me last cycle. I had a very normal if not slightly heavier AF and then BFP days after it finished because I was feeling a bit off. I got positive tests for a week after, informed my GP who wasn't worried, and suspected an unusually heavy implantation bleed. I did end up going into the EPU when I started getting left sided discomfort and bleeding as I was worried about ectopic on the recommendation of some lovely Mumsnetters. It wasn't ectopic and ended up sadly being a miscarriage. I have been wracking my brains as to how AF could have been be so normal but now after reading @justanotherneighinparadise 's story, I think not properly implanting might have been the case with me too. Although a clear line, it never got ver dark for my DPO. Tests showed negative pretty much as soon as I had the bleed but I am still getting symptoms (very sore breasts). Good luck speaking to your GP and sorry mine wasn't a positive story.

NavyBerry · 27/10/2020 08:29

I had a period and then tested positive. It didn't end well for me but I was still bleeding occasionally. If nothing bothers you and you feel 'properly' pregnant you have every right to be and you are probably quite into it already))) good luck!

Takethewinefromtheswine · 27/10/2020 08:34

I had a period, then no sex, then a positive test. Have PCOS so normal to have weird periods (or none). According to dating scan when I went I was 11 weeks pg. Everything went well, baby born at 36 weeks by csection (they went from LMP rather than from sex, despite fact I KNEW I hadn't had sex since it) so bit early but all ok.

40PlusTTC · 27/10/2020 10:52

Just to say I have managed to book a private scan this afternoon. Hopefully that can confirm what’s going on. The NHS early pregnancy unit couldn’t fit me in today.

Sunnydaysstillhere · 27/10/2020 10:54

After my mmc at 44 I got negative tests days later.
Glad you have an appointment -

40PlusTTC · 27/10/2020 15:57

Just in case anyone in a similar position Googles this thread in years to come - here is my outcome. Despite having a period arrive bang on time and as heavy as ever it turns out I was pregnant. Embryo with a heartbeat seem on a scan today. I’m about 6+3. We are in shock but pleased to have skipped the first couple of weeks of the first trimester. Having convinced myself to ignore my increasing nausea for two weeks the first thing I did on finding out was throw-up!
