How long to you really have to wait before coming off the pill?

Have heard lots of conflicting advice on this one. Some say you should wait six months to let all the hormones and chemicals out of your system, others say go for it straight away cause it will do your baby no harm.
Thought maybe one of you well informed ladies might know? Or at least be able to give me an opinion?
We were going to start trying for our first a few months back but then work commitments got in the way so have just decided to come off the pill again but not sure if I need to wait or just get started?
Thanks!

Sorry should add that I meant 'after' coming off the pill not 'before' - been a long day!

I'm not medically trained, so you need to check out with someone who is, and also it's a long time since I had my children so advice changes... HOWEVER, at the time I was told it wasn't so much about hormones etc being dangerous for the baby, rather that your cycle might be unpredictable, therefore potentially frustrating "trying at the wrong time" whilst your cycle settles down. I came off the pill and got pregnant immediately with both of mine.

scorpio1 · 04/06/2007 18:36

I stopped taking my pill and conceived after 3 months first time, 5 months second time.

Me, personally, i just stop taking it and try straight away. it doesn't hurt the babies.

Take osme folic acid now to prepare and good luck

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 04/06/2007 18:38

It's just to make it easier to "date" the pregnancy. You can try straight away.. in fact there has been some evidence published (please don't ask where.. but I have read it, honestly) that suggests you are MORE fertile when you first come off the pill.. so if you wait, you may miss a little fertility surge opportunity.

filthymindedvixen · 04/06/2007 18:38

I clicked 2 weeks after coming off pill, despite having been on it for 10 years. Think its what lilo says, more to do with not getting your hopes up during the 6 minths after coming off it.

Sparkler · 04/06/2007 18:39

Not sure how long you should have to wait. I came off the pill and conceived three months afterwards with both my dds.

Treenie · 04/06/2007 18:41

Thanks for that. I have heard about probs trying to establish when your fertile times are etc so think I'll wait a month. Taking all the folic acid and vits already so think I'm all set.

I've read too that you have a huge surge of fertility for the first few months you come off the pill so I reckon get trying straight away! That's what I'm planning on doing

I think I've read somewhere that doctors prefer you to wait a month just because it helps them to date the pregnancy - so stuff that

LynetteScavo · 04/06/2007 18:43

I agree with too much time on line. I got pregnant stright away after comming off the pill.

toomuchtimeonline · 04/06/2007 18:45

I love hearing that! Gives me hope!

I only have a few more pills to take then it's bding mad for me!

Hope it works out for you Treenie.

lilolilmanchester · 04/06/2007 18:46

Hey, don't wait - start practising - you might get lucky. Just don't worry if it doesn't happen straight away.

Treenie · 04/06/2007 18:51

Thanks Toomuch - hope it works for you too. Let's keep each other posted. Is this your first baby?
I'm going to give it a month so I can get a proper period and start in TTC in july - seems like such a long time to wait but in reality it's only a month or so. Now that I've made up my mind it's the right time for us to have a child I want to be preggers right now. Wish I could be one of those relaxed, indifferent people who will 'wait and see what happens'.

Good point,, if MN had existed when I came off pill, I'd probably never have found the time to conceive

Treenie · 04/06/2007 18:56

Tell me about it Filthy! I've been avidly reading all the threads in conception for the past few months and I can't tear myself away! So much helpful info and so many insperation, lovely folk. I've found it so encouraging and reasuring. Whatever I'm thinking/worried about someone else is too. Nice to feel you are not alone/a nutter!

Come and join us on the ttc threads

littlepicklesmum · 04/06/2007 19:03

Doctor told me I could start trying as soon as came off the pill but be prepared for it to take up to a year, I fell pregnant the next month! (which I hear is common) I started taking folic acid when I stopped the pill in preparation.

Treenie · 04/06/2007 19:04

Thanks Scorpio! I will but not actually ttc yet so maybe I should wait a month and pop my name down in July?

littlepicklesmum · 04/06/2007 19:04

Good luck with it too... any luck we'll be pregnant same time....

burstingbug · 04/06/2007 19:06

It took me 10 mths to conceive DS1 after coming off the pill so please do not be upset if you don't fall pregnant straight away

scorpio1 · 04/06/2007 19:06

yeah that would be nice

we havent started a July one yet, although you are welcome to of course! hopefully we will all be pg!

RedLorryYellowLorry · 04/06/2007 19:08

I came off the pill in Feb and my period has just returned. I am now ttc so best of luck to you when you do ttc

Treenie · 04/06/2007 19:09

Have my fingers crossed for you all. Going to wait a little while and then start a July thread - don't want to be there all on my tod for a whole month! But will be following everyone's progress in June - best of luck.

Treenie,

With DS1 and DS2, came off pill had a proper period then fell pregnant the next month. Wanted a third so came off pill 5 weeks ago - I am now 4 weeks pregnant!

The hormones from the pill leave your system really quickly and like others have said the only problem is calculating your due date if you fall pregnant first month. I was using some cheap OPK's so I know when I ovulated and therefore when I'm due.

I agree with others on the thread who have said you're at your most fertile as soon as you come off the pill - my doctor said to me that it would either happen really quickly of take 6months +.

toomuchtimeonline · 04/06/2007 20:41

Treenie - yes it will be my first. Is it your first? Let's definitely keep each other posted!

Fingers crossed we fall as quick as rozzyr!

I'm looking forward to the july thread starting as I'm not sure I should really be on the june thread yet since I'm still finishing off my pill packet..

P.s hi scorpio! Sorry to hear about you af coming.

Treenie · 04/06/2007 21:01

Yes, my first too. How exciting! Lets wait a few weeks then I'll start the July thread - unless someone beats me too it. x
