I have two girls and I am just starting ttc, mainly I wont a happy Healy baby but we would like a boy, I have heard of a few diy methods, has any one had any luck with these?
A part of me thinks this is morally wrong but I can help the way I feel. I would still love a girl and my oldest who keeps asking for another sister would be over the moon.
Should I just leave it to chance?

For a boy you should apparently have sex as close to ovulation as possible but dont know if this theory really works!

wannaBe1974 · 17/05/2006 16:21

I think imo the more you try and conceive one particular sex, the less change you have of getting pg. the theory is to have sex close to ovulation for a boy, which rules out sex from a week before ovulation until the day before, thus reducing the amount of sperm entering the body, and for a girl the theory is to have sex 5 days before ovulation and not again, also reducing the amount of sperm. tbh I'd just leave it to chance.

I was suggested a book by three Mums called: How to choose the sex of your baby.
I used it for two of my three pregnancies and it worked for me.
Out of the three Mums that suggested the book it worked for two of thembut not the third.
the Third Mum did say she didn't follow the book exactly to EVERYTHING it said to do. This is why she claimed it didn't work for her.
We are thinking of a fourth one now that are wee one is now 15 months. And I think I might be starting "The" book once again for the sake of our bedroom situation.... sounds silly to most but if it increases your chances to one sex over the other - why not.
In the end you still get an adoreable addition to your family!!!!

For my Dd we had sex on monday and I ovulated on Friday.
For Ds I planned to have a boy by using a persona machine and had sex when it told me, alongwith other natural signs, that I was O'ing.

Going for no.3 this time but not bothered which I have so will probably just have lots of sex generally!

BrilMUM · 23/05/2006 08:01

Hi sorkycake....i'm using Persona & trying got a boy. should i sex on the first egg sign [ov] day or the second - am very confused - PLEASE HELP!

bresha · 23/05/2006 08:54

Thanks, looks like knowing when u are ovulating is the key. my AF has always been a bit unpredictable, what would be the best way of knowing when i am o"ing? IV never heard of persona before, who do you use it/dose it work?
did you have a boy second time then storkycake?

OP posts:
sorkycake · 23/05/2006 16:11

Brilmum
I had sex on the evening of the morning of the second egg sign, and more importantly abstained for 4 days before that. I normally O on cd 19 so from cd15 we didn't have sex. I felt O on the evening of the 2nd egg sign and Bingo! I knew it was a boy.

However if you have any fertility issues then this method obviously does limit your chances because you are abstaining for the few days beforehand and therefore not really optimising your chances of getting pg.
All I can tell you is what worked for me!
Good Luck!

Sorry just seen other post.

Persona was designed to be a contraceptive aid. It's a small white machine, looks a bit like a glasses case.
For contraceptive purposes every morning you open it up and see which light is showing, either a green light (safe to have unprotected sex without pg risk), a red light (fertile period so don't have sex) or yellow light (POAS).

The 'poas' acts as an OPK as such and this is how the machine warns you that you are approaching you fertile period.

Obviously if you're trying for a baby then you have sex esp on the red days as this is the fertile period, so you basically use it in reverse for what it was intended.
In most women's cycles it will also give you an egg or O sign which means Ovulation is imminent (usually I get 2 days of this sign). Checking your CM will also confirm this, and if you temp as well then you can be sure that not only did you have sex around ovulation, but temping will show that you did actually ovulate that month.
Persona and temping are separate btw.
The machine retails for around 70 quid and the packs of sticks to pee on are around 9 quid a month, in Boots. Though you can get them a cheaper if you shop around online.
Persona seems to be like Marmite, personally I love it! (not marmite that stuff's foul!)
I don't think people with very long cycles have much joy with it though( +35days etc) HTH

BrilMUM · 24/05/2006 13:22

Hi sorkycake..how do you identify the exact time of ovilation. I had lots of discharge on CD18 and got the egg sign on CD19 and all day really bad ov pains but CD20 still got egg sign & slight pains and bit of discharge in the evening and nothing after that. Please could you tell me which is the best day for me.

sorkycake · 24/05/2006 15:49

EWCM is the fertile cm which is excellent that you have it.

I have cramps for both 'O' days (cd18/19 for arguments sake) as well, but it isn't until the day after that, that my temp rises, indicating that ovulation has occurred. I would have sex on cd18 and again until the last day of EWCM, or if you're temping until you see your temp rise.

If you don't have any male fertility issues then cover both day, I leave it 36 hours, just to give his guys time to recharge.
You could feasibly have all the right signs and the little egg on the machine and still not actually release an egg.

Even an OPK test cannot determine that you have released an egg, only temping (or u/s if you were undergoing IF treatment) can let you know. Your temp will rise due to the increase in progesterone in your body which occurs after ovulation.
There is a fab book which would help you temp called Taking Charge Of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, I highly recommend it to anyone who is unsure of where their cycle is. It is definitely what helped me conceive my 1st child.
You know, they should teach this in schools to girls instead of 'this is the inside of a penis' diagrams!

Hi mate....thank you so much for your help. I have been temping for six months and i have noticed that my temp stays the same for the two egg signs & then drops on the third day. I wish this was easier!!!!

sorkycake · 25/05/2006 13:45

Does it rise after the dip?
The egg signs indicate that O is around the corner, but the dip could be the day you ovulate, your low temp would be followed by a rise of at least 0.5 above the highest of your last 6 temps, if you have ovulated. God does that make sense at all?
Hang on, if you had temps cd10 - cd16 ranging between 96.4 & 96.8 then you'd be looking of a temp on cd17 of at least 97.3 (0.5 higher) to indicate O. You would have a Coverline of 96.8 I think. Some MN'er is going to kick my ass if this isn't true but I think it is.|
If your temp doesn't rise significantly then it maybe that you didn't ovulate. Are all of your charts the same? If they don't have a clear second level of higher temp's until AF then I would go to GP with the charts and seek their advice as to what maybe going on.

BrilMUM · 26/05/2006 07:54

Hi Mates...been looking at my charts this morning and cd19 & cd20 my temp stays the same and then on cd21 is followed by a dip. this stays for few days and rises to 36.9 and that stays til my period and a dip the day i start.
Thank you for beinf patient with me - just want to do everything this time to sway the odds.

Thanks mate!

sorkycake · 26/05/2006 10:09

Can you post your temps for cd14-25 like this:
cd14 - temp
cd15 - temp
and so on.
How long is your cycle in total?

BrilMUM · 31/05/2006 13:31

Hi sorkycake ...sorry mate not ignoring you...forgor my chart st home. Will post my temp tomorrow. Thank you so much for your help.

suzi2 · 31/05/2006 19:05

I know 2 people who used the methods outlined in a book (sorry - can't rememeber it's name!) to concieve a boy. Things like eating loads of cheese and meat and stuff. Both of them conceived boys. In fact, they got twins! Grin My DS was conceived on the day before or day of ovulation.

BrilMUM · 01/06/2006 07:48

Hi sorkycake...please find below my temp results:

CD17 - 36.5
CD18 - 36.7 loads od discharge
CD19 - 36.7 [egg sign on Persona] - ov pains all day.
CD20 - 36.6 [egg sign on Persona] - felt a bit sore in the morning.
CD21 - 36.5
CD22 - 36.6
CD23 - 36.9
CD24 - 36.9

At the moment my cyle length is from 36-38 days.

hope this helps - if you need any more please ket me know

sorkycake · 03/06/2006 15:04

Your temp rise need to be 2/10ths higher than the highest of the last 6 temps. So it looks like you O'd on cd 22 from your temps, as cd23 has the necessary rise. This can be confirmed by the temps staying above 36.7 for your LP. Good Luck!

BrilMUM · 05/06/2006 13:08

Thanks mate...will keep you informed of the progress!

yummummy · 08/06/2006 18:06

Hi
I also have 2 dds and am thinking about trying for a boy- how many months should I chart these temperatures for? And are there any other tips I should bear in mind- someone said keeping testes cool?? Am I right in thinking from your advice sorkycake that I am looking for the day that the temperature rises by 2/10ths to try to conceive a boy? Would a child's digital ear thermometer suffice for temperature or is there a specialist one?? Thanks for your help!

CMac · 09/06/2006 11:47

We have a hugely female oriented family - dh's parents have 9 granddaughters and my parents have 3 granddaughters and until a fortnight ago there were no grandsons on either side. My ds (2 weeks old) is therefore in danger of being very outnumbered at future family gatherings the poor soul! We weren't trying for a boy at all, and in fact we were just assuming we would have another girl but with hindsight we did have sex late on in the cycle that particular month and the chinese gender predictor also said boy (claims to have a 90% success rate and while i'm very sceptical about these things it has been right for most of my friends who have recently had babies). A bit of fun anyway. click \link{http://www.obfocus.com/calculators/gender.htm\here} to try it. Would be interesting to see how many mumsnetters it gets right!

Helenemjay · 09/06/2006 12:25

I know how to get boys Wink my mum is well known for her tips on this in our neighbourhood! Grin - AND it DOES WORK!

BrilMUM · 09/06/2006 13:35

Any tips Helenemjay...any advice will be appreciated.
