As a bid to cut down on the amount of presents we give and receive, best friend and I have agreed to give a "family" present, costing no more than a tenner. I'm now stumped though, as to what to get. I'd planned to get a board game and some popcorn and stuff but all the decent board games seem so expensive.

Does anybody know of a good quiz game or music game or something (or even quiz book) that I could get from maybe Amazon or M&S or somewhere, for less than £10?

Her children are 15, 13 and 10.

An alternative would be a dvd rec, although I've not really any idea what they've seen/got.

Tia

we played this and did some mad karaoke thing at a friends' house recently. All the kids loved it

janeite · 16/11/2008 20:04

Ooh that looks exactly the right sort of thing - thank you! Any more please?

Big fresh fruit hamper.

janeite · 16/11/2008 20:10

Fresh fruit is a lovely idea Goober but she's a chef so gets it all wholesale from the restaurant suppliers and will have loads.

Thanks for the links Dusty.

think it was this one

any other thoughts on what may be their thing? we got some friends this thing here - which all found great fun with some marshmallows and chocolatey stuff to go with it!

Thankyouandgoodnight · 16/11/2008 21:13

A kite from eBay

HappyMummyOfOne · 16/11/2008 21:36

Ravensburg Chocolate Fix game looks good on Amazon, a little different to other games.

janeite · 17/11/2008 17:17

The fondue set would be a brilliant idea - except I got her one years ago! However, big bags of marshmallows etc may well be a contender. The DVD thing they have already, or something very similar. Kite a possibility.

Any more foodie ideas - am liking those!

pass the pigs is a cheap but curiously addictive game for a family. And there would be enough money for popcorn etc to go with it.

janeite · 17/11/2008 18:43

Oh Pass The Pigs is great - and I don't think they have it! Fab suggestion!

Any more?! Make me spoilt for choice!

how about something from Oxfam unwrapped

info here

AbbaFan · 17/11/2008 18:50

We love uno - the extreme version is great. Not sure how much it is though.

Agree - pigs is really fun. We have had many a christmas playing that with all the family.

janeite · 17/11/2008 18:57

They've got Uno.

I recently played a game called "Rummikub" (might not have spelled that right!) at my friend's house. It's a cross between rummy and scrabble. It's ace!! They had it in Woolies last week 1/2 price. They had lots of other board games at half price too.

sparklestickchick · 17/11/2008 19:39

jenga
casino type stuff

sparklestickchick · 17/11/2008 19:40

a quiz book and a quiz master hat

sparklestickchick · 17/11/2008 19:41

ohhhh i had thought ....loads of old fashioned sweets nd those card gmes like old maid and happy families all packed up in a wicker basket?

tassisssss · 17/11/2008 19:42

we love rummikub

my parents have various versions of dominos that I pretend to loathe but are actually OK - triominoes and one where you make lines of your tiles out from the centre

perudo's also good and not expensive

taboo?

Surfermum · 17/11/2008 19:44

We have spent HOURS playing Uno.

Takver · 17/11/2008 19:50

Cheapass games do some fab and really silly games, they are american but you can get them through some uk retailers like this one here
My favourite is 'Before I Kill You Mr Bond' (as in James), but I think they had to withdraw it because of legal threats, tho I've seen it sold as 'The Totally Renamed Spy Game'

Takver · 17/11/2008 20:30

Now I've been reading the reviews on boardgamegeek, I think I might have to get us a copy of the Big Idea ready for Christmas
Have to say that I hate Rummikub and have to grit my teeth at PiL's as they love it.

janeite · 17/11/2008 22:13

The problem is they have many, many board games already - and one of the boys collects playing cards, so they have lots of them too! I like the old fashioned sweets suggestion, chocolate fondue stuff and Pass the Pigs!

Taboo they've got. What is Perudo? Will look at Rummikub too.

Thanks again, everyone.
