Unusual gifts that kids ask for

We run meet and greet Santa events at work and I was helping out today. All the families have a few minutes with Santa and I asked one little girl ( about 4) what she was going to ask Santa for. She wants a hippo - not a toy ,a real one and her daddy is going to build a pond in their garden for the hippo to live in. I hope she's not going to be too disappointed on Christmas morning, she was absolutely adamant that she didn't want anything else, despite desperate suggestions from mum and dad for alternatives. Bless her, she made my day!
Any unusual requests that you've had?

My daughter keeps asking for a sleigh... It's everything and all She wants. She will be getting a tiny glass jar of glitter (magic sleigh dust) + her presents 😅

Home Bargains have large cardboard ones to put presents in, not sure if that would work? Think Amazon do them too.

Not that unusual but on theme with the real life hippo, my daughter wanted a talking, flying blue dinosaur last year as we had been reading The Christmasaurus. She was adamant it had to be real and it had to talk and fly!
Luckily, Build a bear factory sold a blue dinosaur last Christmas, added a Santa hat and Santa managed to get a voice for it that said something about flying and oh my goodness she was soooo happy 🥰

"That man from next door, but dressed as a horse" was my favourite

Also: "my very own placemat", a toy skeleton, a cactus

Mine loved adding stuff up from catalogues/flyers. The year Argos stopped printing them he was gutted. I managed to source an old one and wrapped it up for Christmas. It was by far his favourite present that year!

A nose. There was no further context 🤷‍♀️

My son put a lemon on his Christmas list this year. And a pigeon. (Am getting one and not the other)

This is a brilliant thread- I don’t have an example myself but I do love the chats I have with a kid at the school I work at about his crocodile (how the tail goes outside the pjs etc). Kids are hilarious

That bought back a memory! Blue tac, sellotape and a packet of peanuts.

A yo-yo and then the year after a garden sprinkler we didn’t have any lawn!

TheBleaken · 21/12/2025 19:54

Glu dots. Every year.

My DS really wants bagpipes. He's 9 and I just can't. He plays his toy drums at 6am most week days as it is. So Santa is getting him a model piper that moves a little and plays a very dodgy version of Auld Lang Syne. And he will be be put away with the Christmas decorations if I get my way.......

GKG1 · 21/12/2025 19:57

This year my favourite request is they both want a book of raffle tickets. They really enjoyed all the Xmas raffles this year and want to recreate their own!

SimplyBudgie · 21/12/2025 19:58

Ds3 (8) had 'Egyptian coral' on his list. No idea why, no idea who gave him that idea and his only reason is that it 'looks nice'.

I've bought a very pretty coral ornament (I think it's designed for a fishtank 😂) that he can keep on his shelf of special things.

When my daughter was 10, she asked for her own cheeseboard and cheese knife 😂😂

hopeful2026 · 21/12/2025 20:30

My 10 year old has asked for a microscope so she can look at micro organisms 😂

Soonenough · 21/12/2025 20:31

Requested a shopping basket . Not a play one a real one like Tesco's .

PauliesWalnuts · 21/12/2025 20:32

My little brother asked for a “pair of brand new wellies of my very own” as he’d always had my cast-offs. My mum felt so shit she bought him a pair of blue wellies and he went to bed in them every night for about a week.

usedtobeaylis · 21/12/2025 20:38

My 10 year old has hardly asked for anything this year but one of the things she asked for is a pack of split pins! I got her two packs, pushed the boat out 😆
