We are doing a secret Santa where the rules are, something you did not know you needed. There is a budget of £10, I have a 55 year old woman (close relative) to buy for.

I am looking for ideas for something you would not know you needed. Any ideas would be amazing

A pop up handheld fan. Folds up tiny, incredibly light and very welcome (even when others don’t think it’s hot!)

A back scratcher, wouldn't be without mine

Oxfam do a packed reusable shopping bag made from a sari. About £6 last time I looked, and loads of patterns available. MIL bought me one 8 years ago and it’s still going strong - folds down to nothing, and yet seemingly indestructible.

A glass nail file. I didn't know they existed, my friend bought me one and I thought, WTF. It's better than any emery board I've ever used, has lasted years and has saved me £££ on buying rubbish cardboard ones.

A book by an author you’d never read
And it wouldn’t be “junk”

A mince meat separator. They sell them in Dunelm.
Now the meat is vacuum packed it's so difficult to break up!

Ooh yes, I meant to add a page holder to my xmas list!

Onion goggles
Card holder (to hold your playing cards in when playing card games)
Good hard-wearing mini torch for your keyring

Also - Muji nail clipper. Best one I've used.

Letsd0this · 11/12/2025 21:30

L’Occitane key
things you put in supermarket trollies instead of a coin
a mini Opinel knife for opening letters and packaging (about 5 cm. long - keyring size D)
a 2 metre long phone charger

This works much better and is quicker than a fork for me.

OP was asking for suggestions. It was something I never knew I needed, so that's what I offered. Honestly 🙄

Cherry stoner
Bean slicer
Glasses cleaning kit

A hair brush comb. It combs the loose hair out of your hairbrush

An egg pricker - stops boiled eggs from cracking.

A carabiner (sp?) is surprisingly useful.

I like the food idea better though. Something delicious but slightly obscure/unlikely to buy yourself. like a fancy Italian chocolate hazelnut spread, or Ottolenghi spice mixes etc.

Can you tell me more about carabiners? Somehow I've ended up with a couple but can't think of any uses for them!

pambeesleyhalpert · 11/12/2025 21:43

Truffle oil 🤤
