We are doing a secret Santa where the rules are, something you did not know you needed. There is a budget of £10, I have a 55 year old woman (close relative) to buy for.

I am looking for ideas for something you would not know you needed. Any ideas would be amazing

I was given an electric cup warmer as a present and I love it - keeps my tea warm right to the last drop!

Twilight7777 · 11/12/2025 17:56

Key finder
smart plugs (saving my back!)

DelphiniumBlue · 11/12/2025 18:21

An olive spoon or a lipstick size phone charger, or Burts Bees tinted lipbalm.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 11/12/2025 18:32

Can you tell us anything further about this 55 year old lady? Does she have any hobbies you know about?

A fabric shaver. I never knew I needed one until I bought one last month. My jumpers look good as new.

Rechargeable hand warmers are excellent, I was given some for cold mornings when mucking out. I would massage my old horse with it on really cold days. She loved it!

Peanut butter stirrer
Portable charger
Small magnifying mirror

DeanStockwell · 11/12/2025 18:56

Motion sensor lights ( indoor )
I have several some usb rechargeable some ( eufy ) battery power both type last ages , at least a month on one charge / set.
I have one just inside the front door one at the top and foot of the stairs one in the bathroom and one in my bedroom.
All of them mean I don't need to put the lights on in the middle of the night.
And make coming in easier so I am not fumbling with keys , bags , light switches and falling over my mostly black cat .

Can of air that you can use for cleaning difficult, random things like keyboards. I only found out they were a thing recently.

Look up Bartender champagne cork puller! No home should be without one 😀

I second this. Such a simple idea but means I can open my own bottle of Prosecco.

Problem is that if you are the sort of person that likes a gadget and are in your 50s (like me) you’ve probably got most of these already or had them in the past and got rid because you didn’t use them, or just know you wouldn’t use that particular thing in the first place.

So on that basis I’d go food, unusual spice mixes or obscure ingredients (plenty to choose from in Waitrose).

Yes to this!

Consumables all the way!

SardineJam · 11/12/2025 19:00

I love the idea of flavoured oils, and would like to suggest truffle oil.

In terms of something I find handy, a mini spatula for scraping out jars and minimising waste. TK Maxx/Home Sense usually have them

JoeTheDrummer · 11/12/2025 19:01

Cashmere fingerless gloves from Turtle Doves. They’re normally £20 but half-price at the moment. I wear them around the house in the winter and they make such a difference to my body temperature.

knottywig · 11/12/2025 19:03

Someone suggested supplements - please don’t buy these, you have no idea what medication people are on that could be contraindicated, also some supplements like ashwagandha and turmeric are not great for your liver.
rechargeable hand warmers sound great.
I was going to say rechargeable hot water bottle but may be a bit pricey.
Ototo stuff is fun and useful https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/OTOTO/page/D7839C04-D472-49BD-A5E3-A5E8C6B43FA5?lp_asin=B0C6MMDCT2&ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_ast_store_0DGQC8KWDMNCWXDRZ2A7
IKEA klippits are brilliant.
AirTags (alternative brand, check what phone she has to make sure it’s compatible) to find her keys.

Leopardspota · 11/12/2025 19:16

If you know the person well I’m sure you’ll be able to pick something from these ideas that really suits them. For instance, a pineapple corer/ slicer would be amazing for a
fruit lover - lakeland have lots of useful gadgets for the kitchen :)

SchatzMaus · 11/12/2025 19:31

A “sauberkugel” which is a bag-cleaning ball. Simply drop it into your handbag and it collects all dust, crumbs, lint etc. It is super easy to clean and ready to get back to cleaning. Available on Amazon I believe. I bought these for myself in Germany a few years ago and have never looked back!

Fasterthan40 · 11/12/2025 19:36

Oh just to upvote the turtle doves gloves- they are brilliant. But toaster tongs are also surprisingly useful.

itsmeafterall · 11/12/2025 19:39

A like dongle thingy that allows you to hang your bag at a table whe you are out and about.

V useful.

Giant ice cube tray. Just got one in Nov after seeing one at my friends. Giant cubes, not giant tray!

GameOfJones · 11/12/2025 19:44

I completely agree with the microfibre hair turbans. I use them all the time to put my hair up after I've washed it and the loop and button means it doesn't fall off. It also doesn't cause frizz like drying your hair with a normal towel can do. I even take them on holiday with me.

I also agree with rechargeable hand warmers. I've bought some this year for the first time and they're brilliant on cold walks.

My handy gadgets are a USB lighter, red wine aerating spout and silicone cups for egg poaching.

But I would be delighted with some nice oil, salt or a spice blend as consumables are always welcome.

Maverick66 · 11/12/2025 19:49

I've just bought a friend an aid for fastening bracelet ....her dh hand is too shaky to do it for her .got on Amazon.
