Putting ALL the gifts under the tree

Except actual stockings (not pillowcases or sacks but things shaped like a long sock stocking).

Do you do it if you have dc?

Mine have a stocking each and then gifts have always gone in sacks except for those from FC which go under the tree when he delivers them. Presents are generally not seen until Christmas morning except for those my mum brings with her that other family have given in advance. She gets a stocking and sack from us here and tells me off every Christmas for spoiling her 😁

The sacks always look great and exciting but sometimes I wonder what it would be like if everything was put under the tree and the dc and mum came down to the oft quoted huge pile on Christmas morning. Would it be chaos with everyone trying to read tags and pass gifts to who they are for? I'd have to actually use tags for a start instead of just putting one tag on the sack to say whose it is.

We aren't ones for change at all but I do wonder if it would be nice to see.

How do you do it in your family if you have dc young or old?

Gifts from us go under the tree, gifts from Santa go on the sofa, b3cause we had 3 of them all believing in Santa we couldn’t fit everything by the tree so just used the sofa, that’s how it’s been so until dd stops believing hers stay on the sofa 🥰

BrunchBarBandit · 18/12/2024 23:17

Everything wrapped, labelled and piled under the tree except for stockings which get put at the end of their beds. DC bring the stockings up to us and open the stocking gifts in our bed on Xmas morning (not allowed to come in before 7!), then we go downstairs, have some cereal and start dishing up the presents. Last year we had family stay and it took 3 hours to pass out and open presents for 9 people. It was great fun

Presents under the tree here.
may I recommend my very simple system to you all. Different wrapping paper per person.

motherofonegirl · 18/12/2024 23:49

A stocking is left in my daughter's bedroom for Santa to fill, larger presents from Santa are left on her bedroom floor by the stocking. Nothing too expensive from Santa. Santa also delivers all the other presents for our daughter from us and family members and friends and presents for whoever else is spending Christmas with us. He leaves all these presents under the tree in the lounge. Our daughter wakes us up when she wakes in the morning and we go into her bedroom to watch her open her Santa presents, then we go downstairs to see what he has delivered. We open those presents later in the day.

RatRatPig · 18/12/2024 23:54

Stocking is left by the fireplace and filled by father Christmas overnight. He also leaves one bigger present next to the stocking which is something that's actually been asked for.

All other presents are from family and go under the tree. I think I'll put them out on Christmas eve as DD is only 4 and may not be able to resist otherwise!

Vickim03 · 19/12/2024 05:48

Gifts under the tree! Stockings go in their rooms but opened on our bed first things. They have seperate paper so no confusion for both piles. One gift from Santa under the tree that is put there when he delivers it Xmas eve! Wrapped in the paper I used for stockings

Bournetilly · 19/12/2024 05:54

We do stockings on the outside of bedroom doors which we open in bed upstairs.

All the presents from myself and DH are from Santa. They go under the tree on Christmas Eve night. They have a small sack each which has the smaller presents inside and then the other presents are wrapped and put under the tree. Our DC are still young so it does look a lot of presents/ the boxes are bigger. We didn’t have sacks at all when I was a child. I think it’s more exciting for them when it’s all under the tree as looks like a lot more presents which is why I just got small sacks for the small bits.

Presents from extended family are opened when we see them/ are with them.

ReformMyArse · 19/12/2024 06:39

Under the tree the night before. My DC are adults now but we can’t put them under the tree earlier because of cats and getting to the tree to water it and sweep any needle drop. DD is 20 but still loves picking the tree and giving everyone their presents to open! I still put stockings end of the bed for when everyone wakes.

mumbruh · 19/12/2024 06:52

Any gifts other people get for us or we've got for wider family (who we will visit just before Xmas) go under the tree, alongside the dcs gifts they got from their visit from Santa.
Christmas Eve the elves drop off a new Xmas book (charity shop find) and a small bag of sweets (divided the bags of Cadbury robins, malteaser reindeers, kitkat santas, mini candy canes)
Then Christmas Eve night we put all the presents from us under and around the tree ready for the dc the next day. We also do them a stocking filled with consumable treats they wouldn't necessarily get on a normal day

Wrangleyours · 19/12/2024 06:55

Growing up all of ours went under the tree all jumbled up. We would sit nearby and my dad would just reach out and give them out one at a time. Sometimes someone got 2 in a row but if someone hadn't had one in a few turns he'd reach in and find one of theirs.

We definitely weren't little angel children but there really wasn't ever an issue with this. We were generally just excited by the whole thing overall and waiting to see whose would be picked out next was part of the fun. I think I wouldn't have enjoyed sacks as much.

However, we didn't wait for each person to open a present and watch them. We'd be all opening them simultaneously, albeit slowly, often playing with a toy we just got briefly before getting the next present.

My parents were strict specifically when it came to manners and politeness and I think all 3 of us knew that having the audacity to complain about the speed in which our new toys were being handed to us and in what order would likely to result in them being taken away.

mitogoshigg · 19/12/2024 07:02

I've always put the majority under the tree with just modest stockings (not oversized) hung up by the fire. From when she could talk dd did not want it in her room!

Simplelobsterhat · 19/12/2024 07:04

We do stockings (decent sized and stuffed full) and one main present from Santa. These are downstairs (I remember what a nightmare my parents has trying to sneak a stocking onto my room when I could never sleep on Christmas eve, so avoided that one!). The gifts from Santa at next to stocking NOT under the tree. All other presents, which are from and to the actual people, go under the tree with gift tags ready to be given out in turn to people. This includes a few things from us to kids. We usually put them under them tree at some point on 23rd as part of preparing for Christmas day, so get to see them looking nice for a day or so. We don't do it earlier as it's DDs birthday so it's become a tradition, no presents under the tree until after that.

Jifmicroliquid · 19/12/2024 07:04

We never had stockings as kids, we had sacks. Mum would put presents for relatives under the tree.

Simplelobsterhat · 19/12/2024 07:07

Oh, and someone gives out the tree presents (usually kids wearing Santa and elf hats as soon as they old enough to read the labels). Just given out as they come usually, and under the tree quite randomly, but like someone else said trying to vary it so they look for one for someone if they haven't had one yet.

hopeishere · 19/12/2024 07:51

Stockings outside their rooms opened on our bed.

Santa presents in the sitting room. Opened in the morning.

Other presents (there are not that many) given by family when we see them on the day.

I'm always interested in these threads who all do the other presents come from? Is it because you don't have family close by?

TeamPolin · 19/12/2024 08:17

Presents under the tree here too. Everything gets brought out late on Christmas Eve. Stockings go on the end of the bed.

GretchenWienersHair · 19/12/2024 08:18

My DC take charge of reading out the tags and handing out the gifts.

CombatBarbie · 19/12/2024 08:23

All under the tree here on Xmas eve. I used to buy a roll of personalised stickers for my dds with their names on from Ebay.....so much easier.

Adult gifts got proper tags. Now they are older with less presents because their wish list is branded so not a big a pile, just normal tags.

Londoneye20 · 18/12/2024 21:33

Never heard of Christmas sacks tbh

I think you have

thingsineverthoughtidsay · 19/12/2024 08:30

Ours all go under the tree, but it isn’t chaos, because they get handed out spread throughout the day. We are still opening presents into the evening!!

lalaloopyhead · 19/12/2024 08:34

We did sacks when I was a child but not stockings - so, santa sack was left on the end of our bed and full of presents in the morning. Presents from relatives were also sent to and redelivered by Santa.
We have always done sacks with our kids but also a small stocking on the bed, sack is filled downstairs in the living room by Santa (seemed easier than creeping round their bedrooms in the night) - they are adults now so everything is currently wrapped and under the tree but will be transfered to their sacks when I am undoubtedly up before them on Christmas morning 😂

MrsMontyD · 19/12/2024 09:18

DC have sacks, they are already sitting filled by the tree, the sacks are part of our Christmas tradition and also protect the wrapped presents from the cats and keep the shapes and sizes of parcels concealed.

Stockings still miraculously appear over night on Christmas Eve.

FatAlec · 19/12/2024 09:19

TeamPolin · 19/12/2024 08:17

Presents under the tree here too. Everything gets brought out late on Christmas Eve. Stockings go on the end of the bed.

Ditto.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 19/12/2024 09:22

In my childhood we had two pillowcases at the bottom of the bed Santa would fill in our sleep. No stockings. Dh had no stockings and his gifts were all under the tree when he came downstairs.

We do a stocking we hang on the inside of their door full of small things. Then the gifts are under the tree but each person has a big canvas sack with their name on which has their gifts in from Santa. All family gifts are around the tree. The sacks are around the tree too.

popandchoc · 19/12/2024 09:22

Ours all go under the tree and then we look for labels and pass out to family members. The kids enjoy looking through for their name on labels.
