Why is everyone so obsessed?

I don’t celebrate Christmas but I really don’t understand the appeal. Is it because most people celebrated it as children so it’s nostalgic? You got toys and spends some time with family member you rarely see otherwise?

I don’t get how you can do things with zero meaning behind any of it except “it’s tradition”. Yes but what’s the significance of any of it? All I see is pure commercialism.

The majority of people who celebrate are not religious at all. Some agnostic, some atheists. Yet they still insist on celebrating Christmas. They will put a tree up and tinsel and lights and make up some story about Santa - what’s the significance of any of it? Aren’t these pagan rituals? What do they have to do with Jesus? Just doing it because the adverts on tv tell you it’s time to?

I could just never live my life this way. Doing things like a sheep with no idea why I am even doing it. When I read some posts some people honestly seem to revolve their whole lives around it. I have no idea how much money they end up spending.

How people just rinse and repeat the same crap every year. No wonder most people are miserable and depressed.

Of course after Christmas we are told we have to get excited about New Year, then Valentine’s Day, then Easter, then summer holidays, then Halloween, bonfire night and Christmas again. They’ve added some more gems along the way - Mother’s Day, st Patrick’s day- you get the jist. It’s all load of commercial crap and I can’t stand this time table the west has made up that we all seem to be obsessed with living our lives by with zero meaning behind any of it.

rant over

Love a honk handshake

We shall use this IRL

What could possibly go right?

Definitely. It's a completely mulled wine infused plan, anything that begins with mulled wine is bound to at least lead to fun! 😁

Maybe we keep it quiet during goose migrating season, though. Nasty little buggers and they'll already be angry with us for <ahem> their own reasons!

Purplecatshopaholic · 19/12/2024 19:42

You do you, op. That’s fine. I love a bit of tinsel around the place this time of year and I don’t care, lol.

What begins with mulled wine stays with mulled wine.

The geese need to know nothing

The geese won't suspect sheep, so we'll be just fine. Our jumpers will distract them! 😁

I'm not really bothered about Christmas, but I think people find it fun.

Justnippinginthegaragelove · 19/12/2024 20:44

This thread is making me so excited for Christmas! Red wine poured, slice of Xmas cake (I'm starting early) might catch up on a few Gavin and Stacey reruns ready for the big day. Merry Christmas everyone!
What are you doing for fun tonight OP?

LostittoBostik · 19/12/2024 20:46

Why do you say it's sad @zbw565 ?

I don't find it sad. I find it pragmatic, maybe even optimistic. That it's worth finding ways to be together despite everything. It gives us meaning.

And that's the reason that these pockets of celebration are all the more wonderful. They provide the peak against the trough.

I understand why people dislike or aren't bothered about Christmas.

But why do they look at, or venture to the Christmas board?

It's quite specific.

Why not scroll on by?

Like they probably do with the gardening, mental health, TTC, style and beauty, etc, etc boards. Why come on to a board that you have no interest in?

I see many threads I initially think "i have something to post" then read the replies and think "oh my god there are already many amazing women who have already said tge same thing but better". So I don't post.

So why do people come to the Christmas board when they dislike Christmas?

GiddyRobin · 19/12/2024 21:03

Agree with everything said here! It's just such a lovely time of year. The excitement in the air is catching; DH has just sent me a photo of what we're watching tonight (League of Gentlemen Christmas special), the kids are buzzing but being so good. The house feels so cosy and sparkly and smells of mulled wine and baking. It's lovely.

I don't understand why someone else finds the need to even pick an issue with other people finding joy in those things. Absolutely fine if they don't like it - but why deliberately set out to attempt (and I do say attempt, because it didn't really hit the mark) to ridicule that?

That kind of behaviour just comes across as someone either trying to cause a fight, is seriously depressed, or somehow thinks they're superior to generations upon generations of people who have and will celebrate it! Which shows a bit of ego, and really not in a particularly nice way. It's amusing in some ways that they might think it'll upset or change people's minds. In other ways, it's a little bit sad that it's affecting them so much.

But! To be perfectly honest, I've enjoyed this thread so far. 😁 It's been nice to see how people feel about Christmas and have a laugh at the end of a busy day! Merry Christmas indeed! 🎄

Come on OP, tell us something you celebrate and we’ll tear it down with that smug superiority you’ve shown.

OP doesn't celebrate anything because if you break things down as much as the OP has, nothing has enough significance to warrant being celebrated! She's been told about 15 different reasons people celebrate Christmas and none have been deemed significant enough! I wonder what birthdays are like, or a random family bbq during the summer... invite declined because the bbq isn't celebrating anything of huge significance!? Sure what's life all about anyway....

She’s watching re-runs of the Ted Bundy documentary and if that doesn’t make her feel anything the Jeffrey Dahmer film Confused
