Why is everyone so obsessed?

I don’t celebrate Christmas but I really don’t understand the appeal. Is it because most people celebrated it as children so it’s nostalgic? You got toys and spends some time with family member you rarely see otherwise?

I don’t get how you can do things with zero meaning behind any of it except “it’s tradition”. Yes but what’s the significance of any of it? All I see is pure commercialism.

The majority of people who celebrate are not religious at all. Some agnostic, some atheists. Yet they still insist on celebrating Christmas. They will put a tree up and tinsel and lights and make up some story about Santa - what’s the significance of any of it? Aren’t these pagan rituals? What do they have to do with Jesus? Just doing it because the adverts on tv tell you it’s time to?

I could just never live my life this way. Doing things like a sheep with no idea why I am even doing it. When I read some posts some people honestly seem to revolve their whole lives around it. I have no idea how much money they end up spending.

How people just rinse and repeat the same crap every year. No wonder most people are miserable and depressed.

Of course after Christmas we are told we have to get excited about New Year, then Valentine’s Day, then Easter, then summer holidays, then Halloween, bonfire night and Christmas again. They’ve added some more gems along the way - Mother’s Day, st Patrick’s day- you get the jist. It’s all load of commercial crap and I can’t stand this time table the west has made up that we all seem to be obsessed with living our lives by with zero meaning behind any of it.

rant over

You all kind of proved my point. If tomorrow it was announced that a new festival was added to the calendar celebrating the invention of the toaster you would all happily play along as long as you got your gifts, food and time off. All about greed and laziness and being good little consumers.

In fact if they changed the meaning of Christmas to the celebration of the invention of the toaster none of you would care or notice. Not trying to be mean just thought some of you might want to take a look at yourselves.

enjoy your food, gifts and laying around watching movies!

Hey if anyone wants to give me gifts, food and time off to celebrate the invention of the toaster then I'm all for it 😀 long live the toast! 🍞

I will happily take another excuse to be, ahem, lying around watching movies, and if they're about bread/toast well then that's just an added bonus 😊

janfebmar87 · 19/12/2024 18:02

Happily celebrate the invention of the toaster!
Sometimes people just need a reason to get together and have fun and appreciate each other

Obviously you are too superior for this, no worries just leave us sheep to it.

I will find utter joy in my family and friends this "winter festival" may even buy myself a new toaster

Needmorelego · 19/12/2024 18:03

@MaltipooMama maybe combine the celebration of toasters with this day....

Long live the toaster!!

"oh toaster, how I do boaster, the monster about thy roaster"

HereForTheFreeLunch · 19/12/2024 18:05

Actually, this reminds me. I need a new toaster. I'll spend some time browsing while sipping my mulled wine

A 🐑 sweater for you too!

Also on board with Toaster Day. Maybe we could petition for singing ones.

There's always one miserable twat at every celebration.

xyz111 · 19/12/2024 18:14

Not sure why it's bothering you so much?

KimFan · 19/12/2024 18:14

As mentioned by many previously, including me, why not just live and let live? Those who enjoy Christmas for whatever is symbolises for them are perfectly entitled to do so. It doesn’t need to be psychoanalysed, scrutinised, criticised or opposed.
You are also entitled to hate it. Feel however you want to about it and let others do the same.

MaltipooMama · 19/12/2024 18:28

@Needmorelego oh no no no, why only have one celebration when we can have two?! 🤩

Toast is amazing and underrated and it deserves a celebration for both itself and the wizardry that enables us to create it!

SunshineAfterTheRainR · 19/12/2024 18:32

Well personally, I’m Christian so that’s the biggest reason I celebrate Christmas.

That aside, I was raised in a family and society that celebrated Christmas so you’re correct about the nostalgia and memories, feelings of repeating things you enjoyed doing as a child, are important aspects.

Even though we can (and do) create magic for our children throughout the year, it is also a wonderful feeling of connection to our community and wider network to all be celebrating the same thing at the same time. That could be achieved by any celebration of course - but as I said, Christmas is the one we were all brought up with.

As for the food, gifts etc, I think it is part and parcel of enjoying any celebration that we do those things - weddings, birthdays, the lot. I’m not saying you can’t celebrate things without food and gifts, it’s just that many many people enjoy doing those things. They are socially accepted norms of how to celebrate.

I will also say that it is a strange viewpoint to consider that everyone is morally inferior to you for celebrating Christmas, regardless of whether you do personally. I wonder if you are lacking in empathy or struggle to understand people generally? It isn’t amazingly curious as a festival once you consider its long history and cultural significance, plus the way it is perceived as a family celebration. I’m sure you can work out why people enjoy it.

Hollietree · 19/12/2024 18:37

Do you genuinely not understand that different people like different things to you? Or are you just trying to wind people up? I’m not sure.

Anyway I’ll try to explain it to you.

My husband adores seafood, can’t eat enough of the stuff. I however, think it is repulsive. The sight, the smell, the taste, the texture…… all just makes me want to vomit. I cannot understand how anyone can enjoy it or even love it!

I could ask him 100 times “What do you like about seafood, it’s disgusting, please explain it in words I understand, how can anyone like this devils food?!” And he could reply 100 times with “I don’t know, I just bloody love the stuff!” And I will never ever understand how.

BUT I also understand that all humans are different. That’s what makes us interesting. The world would be a very boring place if we all liked the same things. I don’t need to understand why other people like things that I don’t - they just do!

GameOfJones · 19/12/2024 18:40

Honestly @zbw565 if you're this miserable may I gently suggest you seek out some help? You sound cynical and depressed.

For what it's worth, there has always been a festival around the time of the winter solstice. A time to brighten up the depths of a dark, cold winter.

I love Christmas because I have time off work, time to spend with my family and friends that I love, I love the food, the lights and yes, the nostalgia. It doesn't mean I don't spend time with my loved ones at other points in the year but it brings some light and joy at a cold and dark time of year and it's just nice to step outside of normal routines for a bit and have a jolly old time.

It doesn't need to have "meaning", not everything that brings me joy is meaningful. I'm just over here making the best use of my relatively short time in this world drinking Baileys, cuddling my children, looking at fairy lights and feeling content 🤣.

You should try it sometime!

Long live the toaster!!

"oh toaster, how I do boaster, the monster about thy roaster"

Five butter balls
4 slots for toasting
3 jam toppings
2 side plates
And a crust that was made to feed three

There's always one miserable twat at every celebration.

If you're lucky it's just one and they can be adequately diluted (read passed around)

Can I have a sheep jumper?
I am happy to learn a handshake

MerryChristmasYaFilthyBrusselSprout · 19/12/2024 19:15

Omg I love toast and at this time of year I always treat myself to a jar of whiskey marmalade to go on it 😋

Of course! 🐑 You brought us mulled white wine! There will also be a flashing Santa hat enclosed. It may or may not sing! 🎅

I can sing for me and the hat!

We three kings of orient are
One in a taxi one in a car
One on a scooter blowing the hooter
Following yonder star

This is now the Christmas Sheep Club (CSC) theme! All hats for next year will be produced with your vocals, and if heard in a Christmas market, CSC members will respond via bleating!

Prefer honking to bleating (more distinctive) but happy to go with the majority herd .......baaaahhhh

Ooohhh, honking could work when in public. Keeps the non sheep out of the loop. Perhaps bleating is best kept when greeting in close quarters! The honk would be the true secret handshake!

frozendaisy · 19/12/2024 19:37

Love a honk handshake

We shall use this IRL

What could possibly go right?
