Ds12 weird last minute present request

Last night ds asked if it was too late to add something else to his present list. And asked for a bamboo duvet and pillow. Strange boy. Then he gave me a huge list of the benefits of bamboo duvets and said it's the one thing he really wants now.

A quick online search suggests that bamboo duvets are actually quite expensive. Does anyone have any recommendations? Are they actually worth it? And why on earth has my 12 yr old son requested one for Christmas? Why doesn't he want lego or Xbox games like normal kids?

Is it too late? Have you already spent your budget? You could suggest that it goes on the list for his birthday?

Maybe make it a January sales thing with him and research a nice one together.

Your son sounds adorable. If you can afford it, get him the bamboo duvet (but maybe in the sales).

My 16 yo DS has requested a neon pink women's dressing good from M and S this year. We double checked and he is totally serious.

But yeah the kids now are all into healthy living. I have a teen ds...he's all into healthy eating and has no interest in alcohol or clubbing yet. They're different to previous generations!

perhaps they have been doing something at school like eco living or he has just come across it on the net? with Black Friday deals still floating round you might get a bargain still. Try Amazon Ebay etc

I know nothing about bamboo but I swapped from a synthetic duvet and pillow to a silk one and it does regulate my temperature much better. I can imagine bamboo having similar benefits. Although your son is probably not needing to manage menopausal night sweats like me 😂

My 15 yr old ds got a bamboo mattress topper for his birthday - he's over the moon with it.

Nothing wrong with them but I'd be monitoring his social media and internet use. Clean living sounds ok until it becomes obsessive

The processing of bamboo into usable fibers can actually be quite environmentally unfriendly, so I would suggest taking a look at British wool duvets instead. You could do a bonding research project together on the environmental/ health benefits of bamboo vs wool.

But as mentioned above, wait for the January sales.

And yes, a kid requesting new bedding is a little odd!

I got a bamboo pillow from Costco after seeing lots of recommendations on here, cost around £30 I believe.

We have wool duvets which are lovely - Devon duvets I think?

From what I read it was more sustainable than bamboo. You can't wash them, just air instead.

If my 13 year old requested this I would probably make her wait until her birthday in April, or if she could do with a new duvet anyway say yes but we'll look for one in the January sales

Will he get any money off people for Christmas? With a request llike this, I used to tell my DC if they really wanted something, they could put their money towards it and we'd pay the difference (or contribute how much we thought a reasonable amount was to spend on eg trainers or in your case bedding). It's a really good test of how much they want something.

As a PP said, not all bamboo products are environmentally friendly because of the chemicals used in the manufacturing process They can also be a health hazard to factory workers. It costs more to use environmentally friendly methods to extract the cellulose to make the fabric, so I would be suspicious of cheap bamboo products.

I’m not a fan of bamboo but I did try some organic bamboo sheets from Panda London a couple of years ago. I hate the fabric but their products were good quality, their eco credentials seemed good, and their customer service was excellent. They have 25% off.

He didn't say anything about environmental benefits, just the benefits to him. Temperature regulation or something.

I guess he's seen an advert somewhere. We were all a bit puzzled last year when many of his football pals wanted Sketchers Slip-ins which also seemed to be marketed at older people who can't bend down. Turns out they were being advertised by some famous footballer.

My sister has a Costco membership, I'll get her to have a look. But i think he'll just have to wait.
